Oliver is a young Clydesdale stallion that is just barely started in harness. In this video we build an obstacle course for him to go through with his fore cart. We want to make sure Oliver has as much desensitizing experience in his training as he can get, as we believe this makes a horse much safer over time. An obstacle course is a great way to accomplish this.

Oliver is a two year old Clydesdale stallion that we rescued earlier this year with the help of our viewers. He was very sick when we first got him and REALLY Underweight. He has come a long way and made a full recovery from EPM. He is now well and strong enough to start training to pull and eventually ride (Of course with the ok from our vet and chiropractor). Follow along with our family as we share our life events while living on our 168 acre homestead, farm and stables!
We are all about raising and training our horses, the Missouri Foxtrotter. Our goal is to bring awareness to this breed and showcase just how wonderful they are! We also raise and train our working border collie dogs. And don’t forget the homesteads sheep and goats!!! We also go to occasional auctions and recently have gotten into regenerative farming/agriculture. We are all about learning how to improve our fields/soil.

I think he did great! ALSO JR! Oliver is not the first horse who hates the flour circles! I saw another training video of a riding horse, no cart. That mare absolutely freaked out over flour circles on the ground too. And she wasn't a young horse either! I forget what they were working on but she went ballistic over those same flour circles! Wish I could recall more about it.

Wasn't Oliver smart, adding in that gate obstacle on the first run!😂 Given that the obstacle course was brand new to both of them, i thought JR and Oliver both did really well. Half the fun of this channel is watching everyone learn! Oliver's not the only young man who's growing up before our eyes! Isaac is doing a great job helping with the videos! I drove competitively for over 10 years . A couple of safety things I think you should do with Oliver. Side check on his bridle to keep his head a little straighter. I am concerned he can catch the bridle on the shaft tips. He could pull the whole bridle off. I have seen that happen. Also learn how to hold lines (reins) in left hand with a bridge with right hand. That way you can use a driving whip in right hand for safety. You always need a whip for directing him. Touching him on his sides like where your leg would be. Hope that helps! My grandfather showed horse absolutely HUHE Clysdales ribbons and trophies all around his rooms I would help and I rode and trained them. I am only 5' 1 " inches so I am like an ant but those big horses listened to me better then Papa lol!😊

Takes a heck of a lot of trust for a horse to walk through something they can't see through like that tarp. I think that drill right there will help him be damn near un-spookable, if there is such a word, lol. Great job!

Now on the tarp, and this is just me (dog trainer ) I would have gotten off the cart after whoring him, and walked him through the tarp the first time, after giving him plenty of time to check it out. You are REALLY LUCKY he didn't spook, after the ladders fell over behind him. That could really have set back your training. It is OKAY to break things down into smaller parts. You want to avoid failure or building in. fears or set backs.

Oliver did amazing in the obstacle course for a first time. He didn't rear up and he didn't take off running like a banshee. He just needed to sniff things and check things out, which is very normal for a horse. All in all...Oliver stayed pretty calm during his lack-of-confidence moments. Maybe bolting a plank over the two old style tractor seats to sit on for center sitting may do the trick while Oliver is learning.

I was at a fair once that had a a working team obstacle course. They built a small wooden walkway with rails to imitate a bridge. You'd be surprised how many teams balked at that. They all finally went over it, but lossed points. Paredes training, have balloons and shiny ribbon banners flapping in the breeze. Then add loud music and eventually gunshots. (I wouldn't do that hitched to a cart until he's used to it.) Oliver didn't do badly for a first time. He was a lot quieter than I thought he would be, especially at the hanging tarp.

From experience, once an accident happens, it's a lot harder to work through their fears when they are so young. It's just setting up your horse for the best future IMO. 🤠

Traffic cones with tennis balls on top of them is what is normally used for carriage driving courses. Look into horse agility for fun stuff rather than a tarp think of fly curtains it does not look like a solid wall what Oliver thought you were asking him to do is walk through a wall, I also found police horse training was a good idea. If you get good at the obstacle course would be a good demo at a show. For first timers you both did good

I was going to SUGGEST that you make a circle out of tall cones or traffic cones; something he can see, as he approaches the obstacle and in a different color and material. You might make an effort to see if you can find some rocks to paint white, to see if it is the color and just try to circle the outline of the circle, to begin with. Even people can be used. Once he gets BETTER. Does anyone know what colors horses can see? I know dogs only see a few colors.

That was very interesting, a little bit scary now and then too. But Oliver and you did great. And yes Issac looks like maybe he had a growth spurt recently. One obstacle in competitive driving is 2 poles laid down just far enough apart to fit one of the cart tires between..goal is to control as you drive through & line your wheel up to go between.. & you can practice it at a walk & trot. Another is poles set up at a 45 degree angle . Poles are far enough apart to drive whole cart thru...you drive in and stop then horse has to make turn & push shaft to turn cart around the 45 turn & then walk out the other side..hope that made sense.

I'm so happy to see you wonderful people inching closer to 100,000! I saw yesterday a guy who got to 2 million in just 2 years, but his channel is not even great. There is NO accounting for the tastes of the RU-vid viewers, many who are not very bright! It seems the more shallow the channel and it's message the faster it grows. That's America and Canada for you. Even nearly all of the channels of people who are international stars in the horse world have not grown any faster than yours has, so I get great satisfaction seeing how you've grown, and gained really good people who really care about you and your animals. Careful pushing to fast, I saw my friends horse lose it with a cart behind him. The person in the cart bailed. He ran through a fence, was terrified and never pulled a cart again. “Experienced cart trainers” wrecked him. So sad. So nice to see how much Oliver trusts you.

Oliver did a pretty good job considering this was his first try on an obstacle course, especially when he had to summon up his courage to walk under the blue tarp that was moving slightly in the breeze. He also trusted you and followed your instructions. You and Oliver make a very good team.

Yeah Oliver couldn't understand the tarp because it was just too low. But he did an EXCELLENT job not getting too freaked out. He did amazingly man. Absolutely amazing. Im super impressed even tho he was spooked even his little bit of stress was minimal. He's sound. Very sound.

Great job. Try the opposite direction? Funny about the flour ring😅. How bout a hula hoop? Maybe some plastic balls hanging instead of the tarp. A truck with air brakes sent my horse straight up one time. Maybe sometime tap a horn as he passes or everyone start clapping suddenly. Just some thoughts. Boy, he sure learns quick. 😊

Good Boy Oliver! Once he understood what you wanted and that the obstacles weren't going to hurt him (except for the scary "flour") he did good. He looks happy in harness & pulling the cart...his ears are up and flicking back & forth to listen to you. The blinders don't seem to bother him anymore as he knows you're back there with voice commands. Oliver gets a Gold Star and JR gets to share it with him. God bless.....

I absolutely loved watching this. When Oliver is thoroughly trained, you are going to have a fabulous Clydesdale that will be very well conditioned to be in out amongst the public. I noticed a bit of his confusion. Repetition will remedy that. Becoming familiar with the flour on the ground will also get him accustomed to seeing the guidelines/lane markers/ and arrows painted on road surfaces (parades?). Loved the mattress instant replay! Great job Oliver! Did he get a cookie after all of that?

I was wondering if something might've happened at the Amish place he came from with Oliver's initial fear of the flour circles. Flour used at that place might've not been a benign item 🤔 This obstacle course training with you, Oliver, and the fam was just stellar, JR! Oliver trusts you so much! And, Issac is such a helpful sweetheart growing so fast! Thoroughly enjoyed watching this! Oh heck, everything on your channel is just spectacular!
