Equipment Review: Air Fryers

Air fryers are all the rage, and for good reason. The best models cook food quickly and efficiently, and because they're essentially countertop convection ovens, they can be used in place of a toaster oven or wall oven.

I would love to see them do a video on what foods turn out well in an air fryer and what ones don't

I recommend you join air fryer groups if you're on Facebook. I've seen articles online with recipes for bread in the AF and I've watched a video tutorial on cooking a whole chicken in the AF. It was probably a 4 pounder but it was a good fit in the drawer type. Best of all, it was crispy and juicy.

"Naked" chicken wings "fry" amazingly well. Breaded items made for the oven (orida fries, etc) also work really well. Restaurant supply items for the deep fryer can be hit or miss.

It is more quantity that will get you in trouble, than the food. Have to have enough space around the food for airflow. Other than that, almost anything that can be Fried, or, Baked in an oven, that is not a desert or desert like item, can be made in a Air Fryer. Some desert like items can be done in an Air Fryer, just need to experiment with times and temps. Rule of thumb, 25 degrees less and 2/3's the time to start, then add more time if needed. Same with a convection oven as far as that goes.

Anything you would bake or roast is awesome in the air fryer. You just have to play around with temp and time. I don’t recommend quesadillas in the air fryer. They are too light and the fan blows them around . 😂

@@Sandiastef you can weight them down with a little rack. I got a rack for my air fryer so I could stack things - I mostly use it to keep thin or light stuff like bacon or tortillas from flying around.

I've been buying I-Pot appliances since they first came out; I have the big Duo Crisp (seldom use it because of the bulky, heavy frying lid) and the Mini sits on my counter in red. BTW I've washed the trivet and the basket dozens of times in my dishwasher and it looks like new, no wear, no plastic discoloration at all. Use top or bottom rack. The cheap Dash I had flaked off the nonstick and rusted, a second one did the same thing. I just ordered this model of their air fryer 'cause I want the dehydrate function. I own the Breville Smart Air oven, never use the air fryer function because it's a pain in the a** to try and keep clean, and that dehydrate is lousy. Thanks to our beautiful Lisa for a great video!

I have the Instant Vortex 4qt size. Best kitchen gadget I've ever used and kept! Bit of a learning curve to not overcook things. I recommend using a food thermometer for meats. This is the second one I've owned. I prefer the square basket design over the round. Great to use during our long TX summers!

I did a lot of research, thought the Vortex looked great, but chose the Ninja XL because it is the only air fryer with a ceramic rather than a teflon coating. I feel the ceramic is safer. The Vortex indicates that it is PFOA free, but does not address PFTE which is what teflon is made of. It may be quite safe if not overheated but I feel more comfortable with the Ninja and it performs really well, really enjoying it. (Because the basket is rounded it has a slightly smaller cooking space but is plenty big enough for at least 2 people).

I like the Ninja grill with the grate and thermometer for cooing meat. It leaves grill marks and so far everything tasted very good. The lid lifts up on this one so it's easier to clean. Bought it 2/9/22 based on ATK recommendation and LOVE IT! It does everything it promises and is a breeze to clean. Only air vents are on the back and doesn't heat up kitchen. Highly recommended. Glad I didn't go with the rotisserie model since the grease from a chicken gets everywhere and is a pain to clean plus, if the fat drips on the heating element the unit will start to smoke.

We basically put on a movie or two and prep while we watch. MUCH less daunting!

I bought the Instant Vortex Plus Air Fryer based on ATK recommendation and I love the air fryer, it works great and easy cleanup. I only have two issues with it... 1st - the preheat can not be turned off, if you you cook something and it finishes the cycle then you decide it needs another couple minutes it goes through the preheat cycle again, and apparently this is a timed cycle and not based on temperature, so that's annoying and inconvenient. 2nd - when you pour your food out into a bowl or plate the tray in the bottom falls out making a mess, you have to make sure you use something to hold it in place while you empty the fryer, again annoying and inconvenient. Other than that it works great!
@mrgadget

I love air fryers, especially the "bucket" style because they contain the mess inside the completely dishwasher-safe, washable container. In my experience, even the less expensive models do a fine job, and by that, I mean as little as $40 up to about $70 for a 7-qt model with enough interior space for up to a 6-1/2 pound whole chicken. I just got a Gourmia GAF798 on sale at Costco for $40. It did a fine job and has all the feautures one could want or need. Nothing omitted of which I am aware. These things are a game changer in the kitchen as ATK points out. Thank you for your informative reviews here and on PBS.

I pushed off purchasing an air fryer for a long time because I figured it would just be another appliance sitting on the counter taking up space, or sitting in a cabinet and never used. Against my better judgment, I purchased a Cosari air fryer last month. Along with everything else that I have been cooking with it, I seem to be eating my words that I said! This appliance is a workhorse and has became my go-to method of cooking for most meals for my wife and myself. Last night we had strip steak, baked potato, and asparagus.

@@pamelahuelfer8691 I still love it and have had no problems. I found the same model that Costco carries on Amazon and have to disagree with the negative reviews. I expected the plastic odor but had that only for the first use. I use only the 'air fry' setting and you CAN turn off the preheat which someone complained about. It's not 100% intuitive but it's not complicated. Some people don't read instructions and may be frustrated. I recommend buying it while it's $39 at Costco and you can return it used if you're not happy with it. Costco's frozen mahi mahi works beautifully for 'grilled' fish tacos in the air fryer (EatingWell) and the sockeye salmon comes out great, too. They have a large jug of avocado oil which is recommended for high heat use. I bought the Mistifi sprayer on Amazon which is better than many. I could go on and on - home made egg rolls, corn flake chicken nuggets. It's really expanded my meal plans. Good luck!

I bought a Ninja Foodi 5 in 1 Grill + Air Crisper. It grills and broils, with a heavy ceramic coated cast steel grill. It bakes, air fries and can even be used as a dehydrator. It gets nearly daily use as it's very easy to use, preheats to 210 Celsius (400 f) in 2 minutes, and clean and does it's job reliably to perfection. It's perfect for cooking meals for 1 or 2 people. It cooks 2 massive fish or beef steaks or 4 chicken breasts to perfection. One of the lowest profile convection oven/air fryers and that means you can store it inside a small kitchen cabinet. Best Buy has 2 Insignia models with the same shell as the Instant one recommended in the video, one with dials and one with digital display. The latter is currently $30 cheaper than the Instant one, plus the basket has a neat way of coming apart to dump the tray out (because of this, the capacity is listed as 5 qt while the Instant one is 6, but it's worth it and you won't notice size difference anyway). It's pretty obvious they come from the same factory, so don't bother paying way more for the name brand.

I have the winner air fryer and I do love it: it is consistent and most of the time cooks evenly. I think the key is to make sure the food is spread evenly -- and not over loaded -- and cut properly. I find the edges cook faster than foods in the center -- so, basically, like a regular oven. ETA: one thing I hated was the AWFUL smell of it for weeks. It made me feel it was leaching toxic chemicals into my food and air. It finally faded, but that was...disturbing.

agreed, the smell was awful, but it was gone after a 4 or 5 times using it. Maybe use it empty outside the first 4 times???

We’ve had both styles and preferred “oven” style. I haven’t noticed food not heating evenly. As for needing an oven mitt, we store ours in a drawer below the oven, so that’s not an issue.

No love for Ninja! I got a dual-zone basket air fryer for Christmas and adore it

God, thank you. I’ve been watching air frier videos forever now & everyone else seems to be pushing one or another in a way that feels fake and sponsored. Your videos give the “real feel” with solid reasoning. You have my appreciation and I’m stoked to see the rest of your content :).

Had a Nuwave Oven for years...recently purchased an air fryer. The air fryer is an upgraded Nuwave.

Hey ATK, where do you get those beautiful dark wooden noodle boards that I see over your cooktops on lots of your sets? I'm jealous!

I have recently done a search on ATK. They have a review featuring their favorite brand, TEAK HAUS edge grain. It's walnut. Food grade MINERAL OIL used for maintenance.

Purchased the Instant Vortex plus air fryer based on your review. I wanted to like it had everything I wanted. But unfortunately the burning plastic smell would not go away and was strong. I tried everything possible to rid the smell but no luck. After researching this Instant air fryer seems to be an issue so I returned it.

ATK - could you speak about the coffee filter type liners for the drawer type air fryers?

While I agree the Sur La Table airfryer shown is a slight pain to clean, the rotisserie basket made the best wings I have ever made at home. It only makes enough for one, but so would a normal air fryer. ~10-12 wings. EDIT: I'd also like to add that this model also has a basket and the handle attachment means you dont need an oven mitt to use it. Not sure why they negated to say this. I know its a short video, but don't entirely write off a style.

How does the instant vortex airfryer compared to Philips airfryer?
@Erydanus

Interesting. Every single thing that you said was desirable is reflected in the airfryer that I got, though it is bulky and overly large. It also looks exactly like a larger version of your budget selection except it's branded differently (but the controls are identical). Makes me feel like I've basically gotten, for a change, an old model of a winner. And since it was $60 on clearance and is a 9 qt drawer model I am not complaining.

Have an "oven" style model, it can with a basket and handle and the rotisserie works well. It is harder to clean though

I have the older Gourmia 6qt air fryer with the wide square basket that I got from a warehouse store in and it holds a lot compared to pretty much everything out there. The warehouse store now has a newer Gourmia 7qt model and the the basket I swear seems narrower and deeper and I think they did it to make the footprint smaller and it was a huge mistake because now the basket has less room to spread out your food so hence you can cook less at a time.

While this appliance delivers on air frying promises, I'm still holding out on ATK's favorite 6 slice bread capacity convection toaster oven. Big enough for a 9" pizza, or 4-6 piece fried chicken, even a loaf of quick bread... Why not 😀. Single people & small families usually get left out of the small appliance testing equation. So please give us a break & tell us about your favorite medium toaster convection oven. Thank you Lisa for the demo🙏
