Yikes if your dealing with trailer thieves when you have the bed off weld your business initials in the webbing so if you crawled under you can see it but its not in your face, though I would also put your initials on the tongue. gives them something to grind off then they think its clean

Hahah I did weld my initials into the frame and they just show up on the next video, which is currently exporting.

Oh I agree, oil paints are a pain to work with at times and very smelly too. Still you got it done Shawn that’s the main thing and got the trailer into use. 👍🏻😁

Ouch! Yeah I could see you stopping often to unclog that sprayer, There is a company up the road from us that sprays all there trucks and digging equipment hot pink for that same reason. LOL!!

When I used to use an airless sprayer to put on epoxy, we’d cycle thinner through it at the end of the day until it ran clear. Tips wore out fast, too. They’re great for making quick work, though

I have sprayed so many houses with that and when residents move out, but I was ready to junk it. I ran about $20 of mineral spirits through it which added insult to injury after I struggled with it.

@@GCFD for new metals like that, I would probably pickled it if it had scale, then used something like Sherwin Williams DTM. industrial.sherwin-williams.com/na/us/en/protective-marine/catalog/product/protective-and-marine-coatings/products-by-industry.11543396/pro-industrial-dtm-acrylic.PCP_28124.html not that it matters now, but maybe next time. They also sell DTM etching primers. Or you know, a rattle can for a tenth of the price

@@davidnull5590 yup. Proper prep and good product means no warranty claims. DTM lasts forever. For a trailer like that a gallon of primer and a gallon of paint is money well spent. If you want to see what cheap finishes look like, check out Ohio Wood Burner’s trailer - the OEM used terrible paint with no pickle (probably) and it looks like hell.

A Black garden hose makes great hot water in the summer. Lay it on some metal or foil insulation and wrap it into a circle. Oh, and make sure to leave it in the sun.

Great looking trailer!! I do love the yellow. It's a shame that due to the lack of integrity of people, laws affecting everyone (or lack thereof), have to be made to keep thieves away. I've heard it's said that $1billion is spent on doctor visit paperwork due to laws. Crazy. Anyhow, awesome video and I'm so amazed at how much you can do by yourself! Genius!

Shawn, I prefer red oxide primer it's what is used on most steel applications and it has a sealer inside it to detour rust until you get ready to apply a finish coat.

2 gallon air paint sprayer from harbor freight works great for spraying oil based on equipment. And Caterpillar brand yellow holds up real nice on my 416 backhoe. Didn't even do really any prep except pressure washing and taping it out.

Hi Shawn, the trailer is looking really good. I am impressed with your skills. A cheap spray gun run off of an air compressor works wonders especially with a good paint, can’t recommend any as I am in the UK. Isn’t a shame you have to think about theft it is the same over here as there is no trailer title system like you guys have. Looking forward to the wiring video, not my favourite pastime 🤣. Yes, this size trailer needs brakes on both axles, a breakaway kit, and a backup battery. I'll cover those in Part 4, wiring.

I think you've done a GREAT (!) job on this trailer. Regardless of the challenges you've encountered. Yeah, the paint may not be perfect, but you'll soon be using the trailer anyway, so it won't matter that much in the end. For a future paint job, may I recommend the following option over rattle can? Use automotive, or even better, industrial primer and paint, and apply either with your airless system, or get a cheap HVLP Spray gun, which you can use with a small compressor. That'll give you a very good finish. And automotive and industrial paints are often very competetively priced, compared to the Rustoleum DIY type paint, which is way too soft.

The reason for your lack of paint adhesion is most likely due to the oils on and in the metal. You need to use acetone or wd40 makes a metal oil cleaner that works well. Not sure if they still do that but I am in the process of rebuilding half of my 20ft gooseneck adding a 4ft dovetail to the back. Ur videos are helpful!

There is a cheap paint gun out there that works good. You want one that has a screw on bowl and hooks to compressed air. When you shoot the air, the paint is drawn out of the bowl and sprays that way. No pumps or nothing, and no paint in hose's.

it looks like the tires are really close to the bottom of the fenders. It may be an illusion.

They are pretty close but they are further away than the axles are to the frame.

I love POR15 paint but it’s horrible to spray so I always brush it and it lays down well so it always appears to have been sprayed and I have never had it fall

I did thin it out Greg, but I think I thinned it too much. I got a ton of runs all over. It was such a pain.

Thank you! I love the yellow too but it's getting torn up pretty quickly. They sell the yellow in a rattle can so I think I can keep it looking good fairly easily.
