The second in a short series of in-cab rides with Derbyshire haulier Peter Brownlee's ERF E14, 400, filmed back in January 1989, although there isn't much in-cab in this one, nether the less it show what life was life like in the bulk tipper game some 25 years ago.
Showing the stock ground at Ratcliffe Power Station, Nottinghamshire. Low grade coal brought in by road would be tipped as shown, then a fleet of bowl motor scrapers would transfer it to the stock pile or straight into the feed hopper built at ground level, the coal then moved by conveyor to the furnaces.

Watching this from the Ratcliffe contractors car park looking straight at the coal yard. Always interesting to see how it used to be

Having trained at Ratcliffe Power Station I know the A453 and that area of the M1 well, and that corner beneath the pylons at the end is very familiar. I’ve often wondered what the process from pit to station looked like back in the day when these big stations were working base load so this is exactly what I was looking for. Brilliant videos, makes me wish I was doing what I do now but 35 years ago!

14 ltr Cummins, @ 4.40 you can see the cummins badge on the grill. The old Gardener 8 was a lovely engine.

I read that the power station had a rail feed for coal. Why did they get lorry loads as well?

All coal-fired power stations had rail feeds, and most would have several trainloads per day but discharging and marshalling was a slow process. Several thousand tons per day would also go in by road, as well as pit to pit transport for blending different grades of coal and dried slurry to get the required calorific value correct for power station use.

@@SMayleification brilliant thanks for explaining that for me. Never knew about pit to pit either so that's something else I've learned.

No health and safety was ever in danger of being observed during the making of this film :)
