As a screenwriter with a passion for wrestling... I love this. You can tell a story without any knowledge of story structure, but it's probably gonna be because of sheer luck and intuition, which are not reliable tenets. I do bristle at the word "formula" but I appreciate you immediately referring to that formula as a GUIDE. Emotion is god and story is king, but structure is the means by which the crown is conquered.

To me the only story that I think AEW has done expertly is the CM Punk/MJF feud blending the reality of Cm punk’s actions shaping MJF’s life and truly making a star in MJF. To me that’s the story you should look over not the current elite/aew war.

For me it's the Hangman "anxious millennial cowboy" story from before Dynamite started to him winning the title. Far from perfect (and AEW really dropped the ball on a few parts of it), but it had some nice details along the way.

On the topic of comparing wrestling to food and cooking: For a couple years now I've compared AEW and WWE to two different pots of soup in two different kitchens. WWE serves large pots of soup, different kinds, multiple times a week. They have excellent equipment to control the temperature, keep everything stirred, and balancing the flavor. Now, sometimes there's so much water (time) being used which makes the overall soup seem bland at times, but you always get nice ingredients overall and they have enough to serve people all around the world. They will be making soup as long as they feel like it. AEW however has a much smaller kitchen, their soup is often missing the expected ingredients or sometimes it's even too spicy with conflicting flavors being crammed into it without complimenting the other flavors, and the burner being used is out of control causing some of these ingredients to burn on the bottom (unused talent and dropped storylines). Not only that, this pot isn't big enough to hold the ingredients so it's overflowing. They serve people who know how to pick out the few things they like, or have acquired the taste. Sure, the owner has enough money to dump the pot and start over, but the customers are getting impatient and frustrated waiting for a consistent product.

Eric brings up a good point, 50/50 or 60/40 makes a hall of famer in terms of creativity. The reason that that's the best you reasonably do is bc youre making an educated guess about what people will like and every performer is guessing what you meant. The more layers there are, the lower the % goes.

I remember Eric in TNA even with Jeff Hardy I know he probably has a lot of regrets on sending Jeff out there that night, but what was the ultimate goal with Jeff? I loved the whole Willow story with Jeff and I know that was his OG story to tell his story through Willow in a Heel Story. How would you have drawn it out in an TNA environment back in the day

The problem is that AEW will start a storyline and totally forget that they started it to begin with. For example, they were going to tease a breakup between Matt Hardy and Private Party. Then they stuck together like nothing happened. Same thing with Luchasaurus and Christian. Weeks later he's still there. Um.....wasn't Lucahasaurus going to break from the "family?"

I don’t think Tony Khan has the patience to book a great long term story. Things like the Four Horsemen, the nWo vs Sting, and the Bloodline take years. His formula seems to be like Russo’s crash wrestling.

@@mrnicemam8523 He had a HUGE filter in Vince McMahon. Who knows where those stories would have landed without McMahon at the helm. If fans had not been nWoed to death on Nitro, WCW would have won the war. The WWF had a lot of lucky breaks (then, now, and forever … see what I did there LoL!). Seriously, though… WCW’s roster was much better. They even built two of the attitude era’s biggest stars: Steve Austin and Mick Foley. I just don’t know… I hate to knock Russo, but I just don’t see him as the architect of the attitude era. He had that awesome WCW roster after he let the WWF… and did nothing with it.

The magnetron in a microwave does not just heat up water. Greater levels of water content do heat up hotter, but anything that is larger than 1 cm can be heated in a microwave. You just can't heat up bugs like ants due to their bodies being too small. The short length radio waters also can't penetrate objects that are greater in depth than 2 inches. Once you get past 1" in depth on all sides, heat is unable to penitrate. Deeper objects have to rely on the fluid within the 1" barrier fluid to heat up thicker objects. This is why growing up Hot pockets that were too thick or filled too densely were always frozen in the middle but scorching hot everywhere else. The strength of the short distance radio waves are so powerful that it can make objects explode that have high fluid content with a thicker outter shell like skin or a skull. This is why you should never play with a microwave.

This is why I stopped listening a while back. He never CLEARLY explains- no examples, no detail. I saw this title and thought "oh damn, I'd better try the pod again, it looks like he's finally explaining what he means by 'AEW lacks story'!" Nope. Just "Read this book to learn how to tell a story!" lol "there are 17 boxes to check!" WHAT ARE THE EFFING BOXES?! If I told you that you're an idiot because you don't know how to do your job, you'd ask me how to do it better, if I'm so smart. If I then responded, "oh dude, its basic, you just gotta read these books!" you'd tell me to go love myself, no??
