When this song came out, I remember people leaving the room when it came on the radio. Other thngs didn't matter. Nothing mattered but the understanding of what grief and pain does and the hope and belief that there are no tears in heaven.
This came out in 1992,'Tears In Heaven' was borne out of an unimaginably tragic accident involving his four-year-old son Conor Clapton. Conor died having falling from the 53rd-floor window of a New York City apartment when Eric Clapton was elsewhere in the city.
Tears in Heaven" is a ballad written by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings about the pain Clapton felt following the death of his four-year-old son, Conor, who fell from a window of the 53rd-floor New York apartment of his mother's friend, on March 20, 1991. A song that will touch the very depths of all who listen to it.🙏
Check out the Genesis We Can't Dance album. They wrote that album when this tragedy happened. Genesis wrote a song specifically to memorialize this event. The song is called Since I Lost You
That's right. They were already writing the music, but they didn't have any final arrangements. Phil got the call about Conor and of course, having known both him and Eric very well, as did Tony and Mike, he wrote the lyrics to it. Later, he went to Eric's house to run the finished song by him; they wouldn't have released it without his approval. He was very touched by it. Then he played Phil Tears In Heaven, asking him for his opinion. Phil loved it as well, so much so that later in 2005, he agreed to be one of many artists assembled by Ozzy & Sharon Osbourne to record a cover version of the song for Save The Children UK in response to the Asian tsunami disaster in December 2004.
Eric no longer sings this song as he says it hurts too much. A Christian musician named Phil Keaggy was so moved by this song he wrote Eric a song in reply called “Dear Mr. Clapton”. Phil is one of the top guitarists you e never heard of.
