Eric Liddell (1902-1945) was at Eltham College, the School for the Sons of Missionaries, from 1908 to 1920. His parents were with the London Missionary Society and served at Tianjin (Tientsin) Great Qing, North China. He won a Gold Medal for the 400 metres at the 1924 Paris Olympics. From 1925 to 1943 he returned first to Tianjin, and then moved to Xiazhong, Hengshui, Hebei Province. He married Florence Mackenzie, a Canadian missionary daughter, in Tianjin in 1934. They had three daughters, Patricia, Heather and Maureen. In 1941 he sent his wife and daughters to Canada for safety. In 1943 he was interned by the Japanese in Weihsien Internment Camp and died of a brain tumour in 1945. Extract from 'Songs of Praise', BBC 1, Sunday 15th July 2012.

Eric Liddell was an epitome of shining faith and his life inspires us even today. Both as an outstanding athlete and a missionary later incarcerated in a war camp his story reads like a tale of formidable courage and conviction. I found this upload today and want to thank you Ronald Ellis for the joy of remembering one of my heroes. My favorite Scotsman.

Mr.Eric not only ran for God but he burned out for God.George Whitfield said he would rather burn out for God than rust out.The race is not for the swiftest nor for the slowest but he who endures to end shall be saved. This man ran his race well. What made me give my hat off to him is not what the world says about him,but what his family says about him because they know the real man behind closed doors. Moreover he walked with God as Enoch God took him and he was no more.We need more godly fatherd as Mr.Liddell in todays Christian homes and this goes for godly mothers as well.

Thank you! My mother passed when I was four. I wish I could have known her even now at 65. Thankful for a godly heritage. Jesus is enough.
