Dad stop talking and asking questions about Eric! A lesson time is precious …. let her have his whole attention! My husband did this when I went for a bike fit, just talked through the whole thing about bike riding!
I saw him once at Dallas international airport, he was about to board his flight, I couldn’t let the opportunity go so I ask him for a selfie with me... he smiled and said: of course. Nicest man ever!!!
A good teacher is always a foundation of success no matter what field. I had a great helicopter instructor and a great guitar instructor...Always go back to the basics that's where the foundation is. Good going Eric
if you are afraid of making a mistake, if you are afraid of playing, if you do not throw yourself you will never learn. Just sing the music in your head and have fun with the sax. don't block yourself. ;) Music is like a language to learn. If you get stuck and don't talk, you don't learn. HAVE FUN, play, come on!
I met Eric in Portugal in 2016, he was amazing!!b A true gentleman and amazing talent!! He had time for everyone he signed autographs for everyone and cheerfully responded to all questions asked and even offered advice!! This man is a legend and a treasure!!
I saw Eric perform with Brian Culberson in Albuquerque, NM back in 2018. Thanks for Sharing and inviting us to this session, virtually! @25:40 as you play your melody, give those first notes a slight attack or accent and play just slightly in front of the beat, but don't rush the tempo to get that "swing feel" Work to stay in the pocket and add volume dynamics. She is very lucky to get the one on one experience with the Dr. @EricMarienthal. 🎷🎷🎶🎶 99% desire with 1%hard work = Fun with improving your craft
Cool to hear the girl change her technique and sound so much cleaner. Legit improvements easily apparent. What an awesome opportunity to learn from a player like Eric. Money well spent by the dad!
Thanks for posting. I would really like to hear this girl playing in five years... I like her attitude, her embochure... and his sound will be really good in no time. I also liked Eric's advices and his friendly teaching skills. Best wishes!
OMG I just remember who is this man! The saxophone player from Chick Corea electric band!! I didn’t know his name. No wonder I can’t stop watching him play.
Awesome!! Thanks you so much. Your daughter is super lucky. The first exercise about articulation is so so important. A beautiful sound is about control and constant refining of your approach . Lucky she got this lessons so young. Good luck to you and her!
Meu sonho fazer uma aula só, que seja, com esse Mestre do Sax, Eric Marienthal... Sou aqui do Brasil, mas sonho um dia em fazer um som com esse cara algum dia da minha vida...
@@StefanSaxCoachSaxMaster WTF... So the sound of an average student is better than that of a renowned professional... Just shut the fuck up, wiil you? And you are a sax teacher? With no ears?
Hi, I like your style, Can you pls tell me what book you are working from? i like how you correct the head mistake because it's something which I do and sitting down. I notice 90% of playery always stand to practice apart from soprano. which I am learning Jaz
My dad doesn't know much about music, but when I used to play the piano, he always advised I "move a bit" instead of staying so still, as Eric does in this video. I believe it made a difference. You have to "feel" the music while playing; express with it.
He moves when he is performing. Practice is different. You are trying to isolate and focus in on specific aspects of your playing you want to improve upon. You should be as effifcent with any movements and those that don't add tp your technique and playing should be avoided if possible.
Hy Mr Marienthal is one of the best. Loved his solo in Blue Miles with Chick Korea, hear round and round .... That's true, we feel a great soul under this great prerfomer. Anyone knows the song he is using as a backing track for the lessons ? Thanks in advance
Eric Marienthal, are you kidding me!! Loved him when he played with the Rippingtons. She’s in the presence of greatness, I’m impressed how fast she’s learning.

Once they began playing along with a track, Eric stopped reminding her to tongue the first note of her breath. Eric is nicer than I am. I would have stopped her every time.
I was so happy to see the lesson begin with raising the neck strap up, because many promotional photos of Eric show him playing with his head looking down to his shoes. I see the photos and think he can't play at that angle!
From the Chick Corea Elektric Band to The Rippingtons to Jeff Lorber Fusion Band to collaborations with Lee Ritenour, Chuck Loeb and Randy Brecker, Eric Marienthal for me is my favourite saxophonist and one of the best in the world. A true gentleman and world class player
Just seeing this for 1st time. Kyer is quite good. Yes, her youthfulness shows when playing with someone as talented as Eric but she was holding her own. I'm impressed by her talent at this point in her journey. I'm in my 5th year of self teaching and wish I could play as well as she does in the video. Great job I'll look for more from her in the future. Thanks for sharing.
gtiprod. Its in his book but Kyer says not really a piece, more of a lick. I don’t know the name of his book, but it’s something he does sell on his website supposedly. Hope that helps
Curious how long Kyler had been playing for at this point and what her background is (for example any piano experience) as she seems very comfortable reading from the sheet, recognising the key and knowing where all her fingers are?
I think he is playing a Mark VI Tenor, a Berg Larson Metal 100/2 Mouthpiece with a Brancher ligature and 2,5 Vandoren 'Blue Box' reeds. You can find this setup and all other setups on his website ericmarienthal.com/equipment.html.
It’s interesting to see a pro player with a personality so much different from Michael Brecker, who is the only sax guy I knew. Michael seemed so quiet and introverted….. whereas Eric seems to be more outgoing, and willing to share his insights.
I don't know why RU-vid recommended this to me now but now I really wish I was in her position 😱even as a classical tenor player I'd love to have that opportunity to play with Eric. Eric!!
I respectfully disagree with you. I think a bit of that here and there is a GOOD thing, as a demonstration of "hey, once you get comfortable, and you embrace this journey, you can blast away just like this."
The tenor saxophone is too heavy for the young lady and kills her neck and posture. Instead of a neck strap, she and other young tenor players should be using shoulder harness like (a) Jazzlab Sahophone Harness, (b) Marmaduke Feather IV Shoulder Strap, (c) Adorence Lengthened Saxophone Shoulder Strap, or similar.
This neostrap kills your neck. When you use a good strap and not one like this, which tends to stretch a little bit, it's better for the posture. But yeah, there are some very good alternatives, but they are very expensive..
hi, i have a question, how can i tell what saxophone is playing in a tune? is it a tenor or an alto or soprano ? and what king of pitch is the saxophone I am hearing. because many times i can't figure out. i have an alto , the song perhaps sounds like an alto playing but i can't imitate the sound especially middle to high notes
A soprano is going to be the highest pitch by far, the alto will be half an octave deeper in pitch than a soprano and lastly a tenor will be a whole octave lower than the soprano and 1\2 octave lower than the alto. If you can’t tell from that than just listen to them and you will notice there is a very deep one that will be the Bari or tenor but most of the time it will be a tenor the alto does have less sound as well due to a smaller horn.
I realized my comment was not really related so to answer your question in order to tune your saxophone I heard just blowing in a b flat to warm up the horn than just blow in a f sharp without making sound for about a minute than it should be tuned
@@moremankey7894 that is interesting , i didn't really ask how to tune a saxophne but since you talked about it, is that concert b flat meaning C for tenor and G on an alto. and what is blowing on f sharp really is going to do , but as far as my question, it was if you hear a saxophone playing how can you tell if it is an alto like mine or a soprano even though both saxophones can play those note. so from there you can tell if you need to transpose the song or not to be able to play freely without notes sounding uneasy
Cringing each time she goes to adjust that strap. Hate seeing a horn dangling in mid-air like that, without any support. Always cool to see a master at work.
@@saxmandiggle1573 Right, and I suspect she was quite nervous. My first lesson with Bob Berg, Jerry Bergonzi, Chad Lefkowitz-Brown, I practically soiled myself.
Hey man, gotta seriously check your ears, she's good for being so young aged but... you gotta know one thing: the right sound with a saxophone might not be what you think you like. I saw some people got too much used to their wrong sound. Another EG: I sometimes really like the timber of some player but I would NEVER want to sound like them when I have my horn on! So, this makes sometimes difficult for anybody to distinguish a good sound maybe dirty but controlled, than one less dirt BUT less controlled or somehow faulty. It makes difficult to find your own right mouthpiece, then, beyond their cost. This because a sax is something you can play in thousands different ways and timbers and they can be all good or all wrong, or 50/50 and that will be even worse! Cos ears (that's your mind, then) can get used to errors or... Being not well in tune from birth! Saxophone Is a VERY maze of tricks for this. My HO
