After many years of waiting, I finally got an Integra Type R. Like many of the cars in my life, I didn’t plan for it, but I’m glad I ended up with it. See the link below for the full story on how I got this car.
This is a USDM Type R. It will be slightly different than the JDM, UK, and AU models.
As you’ll see in the video, this car needs some work, but as you’ll also see in the video, I’m ready for it.
I do plan on producing a video about the differences between the GSR and Type R in the near future. I’m not sure when I’ll start doing videos about the repairs, but they are forthcoming. For now, I plan to enjoy driving it.

@@ericthecarguy Rebuild, it is SOOOOO worth it! You have what is basically still the ultimate DRIVER'S front drive car. A car that Honda did so well with, most people that mod them make them worse....This car absolutely deserves a new lease on life. I am betting it made one hell of a winter car, but holy crap talk about wasting potential....

Would love to see a complete restoration (or close to it). Drop all the sub frames out and powder coat/blast everything with new bushes and fresh hardware etc. Replace anything that needs replacing with something better. New exhaust, fresh pads and slotted rotors etc etc

Even cars that came from Japan completely rust free, after a couple years in UK they start to show corrosion even with lots of protection😢

elliot438bcfc not always true, I had an EM1, in the UK it’s whole life. Rear quarters and sills were completely clean, not even scabbed. Underneath the rear was crusty, worse than this integra but all the metal was still solid, as the rust was very thin. That said I would agree that most civics even from Japan are buckets 😂 think the coupe fairs better being undersealed from factory and built in the US

Agree, I just get underneath and coat any visible rust with copper slip grease and it ceases to be a problem. Just do that once a year..

I really do appreciate this vehicle and how stoked you were to get the car. No matter the price. Today, i found a hidden gem. A 95 civic ex si, full package with rear disk brakes, abs, not damaged except the hood and a bumper cover. But other than that. Man i got to say: i completely understand you. Specially because they are 100% vintage cars.

Welcome to the club Eric! I have a 98 ITR. Owned it since October 98. Believe me, I've tried to sell it multiple times, but always backed out. That was in my teenage days. Glad I held on to it. 20+ years now. Ton of memories. Allot of mustangs and camaros left in my rear view. Congrats again.

I sold my Jap import Integra XSi (Australia), the first car with a factory B16a engine and have regreted it ever since. Type R of it's day before Type R existed! Love to see your passion for these Honda's. They where light years ahead of their time.

Glad to see you got yourself a new toy, I credit you and your videos for helping me replace my motor myself in my 98 civic. I watched your videos for reference and got it driving again back in 2014 when the head gasket blew at 190k. I wish you the best of luck with your purchase Eric! You have one of the Best modern classics in the palm of your hands. Please, Please, Please post your restoration process and journey on youtube. I own a 1995 Honda Civic SiR EG6 (Like your Integra Type R, is all there and totally standard) which is sadly rotting away in the outdoors for the past year. I hope to start restoring it in the coming months. Owners of these wonders of engineering by Honda should cherish them and look after them as everything about these cars will never be seen again. Many thanks and keep up the good work that you do to keep these Brilliant machines on the road.

@@maximusareilius2262 well lsd transmission is a big deal.. Still my buddy picked up an Integra the other day for 2k, put 12k into it and I'm pretty sure after turbo kit, lsd, suspension, wheels and tires you could end up with more performance for same dollars into.

As I'm sure you're well aware already, if you want to get any OEM parts to replace things on the Type R (or even the GSR), you better get them soon as every day more and more parts are discontinued for these cars. I have a custom SMSP exhaust manifold (a real one, not one of those PLM replicas) I would be happy to donate to the project if you wanted. It would go nicely with a nice exhaust, and obviously you could always put the OEM manifold back on if you wanted to return to stock. No one seems to want to buy it locally so I'd be happy to give it to you as thanks for all the videos and information over the years, if you're interested.

Keep the Type R as OEM as possible. More modifications, the less pure it will be. Instead, mod the GSR!

@@TreyCook21 I personally don't think correctly installing an OEM accessory like fog lights is bad and I don't think it makes the car "less pure", but that's just me. The way I see it if that was the case higher trim levels with more options would make the car "less pure" as well. Aftermarket stuff I can understand though

@@averyalexander2303 I agree with OEM accessories. He said the harness and button was OEM, but the lights are PIAA. Is that the OEM supplier? It just seems like there would be a spot in the bumper specifically made for them instead of having to bolt them onto the bumper. Side note: I know nothing of the Honda life and care nothing about purity, but I do appreciate a clean install.

Modify it however you want but make all installs clean and reversible and hold on to all oem parts being replaced! Really not gonna matter anyway, it will go to his son.

Looking forward to watching you work on this beauty Eric. I've always liked the way you produce your videos and the fact that you avoid the whole 'hype' video thing that you get with far too many car channels on youtube run by 16yr olds, and more than once I've thought that it would be nice to see you work on something special rather than just another Odyssey. I have an 05 Euro Luxury Sport in vgc, with the 6spd manual. Australian delivered car, zero rust anywhere. Had it for almost a year, and it's by far the best car I've owned. Can't wait to see you start on the ITR.

Nice find, Eric. I remember these when they came out in 1997 and went to drool over them at the Acura dealership on Montgomery road just north of Kenwood. They were destined to be special. I drove my '86 GLH Turbo, which I still have, to go see them and can still see it very vividly in my mind. Cool cars for sure. Championship white was my favorite color! Looks like your gonna have a lot of fun with yours!

A friend of mine got to drive a real Type R about 16 years or so ago, and was blown away by the handling and how hard it pulled, he had at the time a 1992 Integra GS. He has wanted a Type R from that day to now, but it is nice to say that his current 1993 Acura Integra GS is about as quick as the Type R. His 1993 though has been massively upgraded to be as quick, B18A1 block, ported 1995 B18C1 Integra GS-R head (with Skunk2 lost motion assembles), high compression pistons (with the GS-R head 12.5:1 compression), ported Skunk2 intake manifold matched to a 70mm throttle body, 4-1 exhaust header with 2.5 inch collector to a 2000 Camaro SS Flowmaster catalytic converter, a quiet Greddy SP2 cat. back exhaust, a chipped OBD1 modded for VTEC and tuned by me using Crome on a Moates Ostrich 2.0... With the stock GS-R cams, and the tune as I have it (tuned using a vacuum gauge and wide band O2 and on the fly tuning) I am guessing his engine makes at least 190 flywheel HP. He believes the only thing keeping his car from being as fast, is the extra weight of the DA9 chassis and he is still using the stock 1993 Integra transmission which has a wider gear spacing and a 4.44:1 final drive. With a bit of weight taken out and a shorter geared transmission, we are hoping to make his car at least as fast as the Type R...and faster if decides to build for a turbo.

I don't think that you paid too much. But what amazes me is the value of seriously desirable Japanese cars. After working on Toyotas and Hondas at the dealer level since 1989, I have seen them come and go. So many I have owned, and those I have wanted to own. Currently own a 2011 Tacoma TRD Off Road double cab and an 01 Camry. Loved Integra's but never owned one. Had close friends that owned them and worked on them. I'm happy that you have finally was able to own one that you had coveted for so long. Enjoy my friend!

Congrats on the score Eric! Even with the issues, I still think you did well. And having the parts, lol, that is too cool; yes, the universe is telling you that you two belong together! Your plans sound great, pretty much what I would do. Also I think a large percentage of your viewers are Honda/Acura fans / owners, so this may bring quite a bit of interest. Do what you want - it's your car! It's great that you can use Integra parts (bumpers, etc.) to replace some of the rusty components. If it were mine, I'd clean up all the rust, replace any worn bushings, the exhaust, and give it a good clean up. I'd definitely be scoping out Craigslist and forums looking for any part-outs, and in time consider bodywork & a respray. Like you said, I doubt such a light car needs much more than stock suspension and brakes - these were engineered & built when Honda was very much on top of their game. I'm glad you found each other!

Super happy for you man I got mine 4 years ago and spent $25k on restoration back to stock all done in house which i was fortunate to purchase alot of the parts before it got discountinued within the last 2 years all I need is sport tires and I will be driving it for the first time this spring get ready for the journey of perfection I will be watching

It's very mild surface rust... That's a fact. But if he wants this 'rare car brought back... or "restored" --- then yeah, I can see that being an issue in 10 years when he's trying to sell it and double his money.. Can't have rust on that day.

Eric a true gem. I would mildly do the upgrades you mentioned and also keep it stock. That what I have done with my 08 SI sedan so its tastefully done. Great channel keep all those good videos coming. Regards EQ

So I just learned of you and your shop yesterday. I live about 50 miles away near Springfield. Anyhow, it was after hours so I didn't bother calling. When I googled your business it showed your hours and that you are open on sundays from 3 to 8PM. Long story short I drove out today just to check your shop out and talk to you about getting some Honda work done. I wish i had called first before making the trip. I was sorry to hear on your message when I called that you're not open to the public or taking any work. Figures as I liked what I saw from the few RU-vid videos.

Ultimately, yes you paid too much. But! sometimes you have one chance the cash in on your "dream" and you either strike, expense be damned, or lose out. What the right move is, is subjective and circumstantial for the dreamer.

As a fellow Honda lover I am glad to see its in good hands now. I have a 99 Si that I keep out of the Midwest salty winters. I am slowly restoring mine. I was able to locate new OEM floormats. Doing the interior now. I did the same updated aftermarket (quality) as stuff wore out. Apexi World Class exhaust, Mugen header, Koni adjustable struts etc etc . It will never be stock again so I don't mind changing it up a bit. I am glad you are going this way as well.

Ah my dream car! I'll be a guaranteed viewer on any vids you do on this car that's for sure. Tear it down and build it back up like new. You invested a good chunk of money so I say go the rest of the way and make it the nicest type r still in existence. You've got the know how and will be creating awesome content. That's an awesome find, even with the bit of rust.. rare find all stock like that !! congrats dude.... you have the ability and the equipment.. we know that.. :-) definitely bring her back .. maybe not all the way down to frame level restoration but all those details that she needs......I'm looking forward to it.... I own a 06 Acura TL I have been giving some Love too (among some other cars I own) so been following that series....enjoying the little piece of Honda/Acura you provide on the web.

Rust is cancer for cars. I honestly think that car deserves to be restored to a factory condition. You won’t retreat it. You have the shop, you have the tools, so?? Start stripping the car and making videos. We will enjoy to watch the best integra type R coming to factory condition. Just my 2 cents...
