I read that the EL bought the longer SDP45s not for passenger service but the expanded fuel tank.

Someone sure knew when the trains were coming. Freight trains, with a striking selection of motive power, making their way through a bleak landscape.

The photographer's car was the white Pinto that's sometimes seen throughout. It looks it had a scanner antenna installed.

The EMD E8 817 was the last in the fleet to still have the port holes on the sides. However the Alco PA units were always my favorite. Great sounding and could make some smoke as well. And the Erie Alco FA A-B-B-A pulling freight were also cool.

The footage is really good considering the age. Whomever was behind the camera knew what they were doing.

Wonder if those Southern hoppers got delivered to Cincinnati via Marion and Dayton.

A lot of this footage showed up in Ron McElarth's EL West End video and it's really cool seeing a much cleaner copy of the footage.

I forgot about that video. And yeah, the film conversion was pretty terrible.

At 5:58, the PC geep shown idling at the old NYC freight house is prob the AM Marion switch run out of Galion Ohio. There was also a PM version.

EL's unique red-white-blue SDP45s were painted in bicentennial livery, so that would date it 1975 or later. Once Conrail arrived, most of Erie's mainline west of Buffalo was torn out. Most of the tracks you see here are likely gone today. Note the 'hogback' rails causing the cars to sway. Bad shape.

If only the EL wasn't incorporated into CR and ended up getting acquired by either the Chessie System or NW...

At 10:20 is PC F7 1865. I would photo 1865 at Conway engine terminal in June 1977. 1865 had just been "white lined". Ironically, 1865 was still running! If I remember correctly, 1865 was the highest number on a NYC F7.

16:18,,,trailing loco is one of two former SD45s that were wrecked in Ohio in 1973 and rebuilt as SD45-2s. Note the standard SD45 fuel tank. A regular EL SD45-2 has the extended range fuel tank. Some punk kid threw a mainline switch in front of a train and said train derailed into a siding killing a crewman. One of these ended up on the MRL then to Cincinnati Eastern, last spotted in Chicago going where???

Starting at 1:11 you can see the piggyback trailers rocking badly on the Penn Central train. Looked like they were going to tip over.

EL moved a lot of tonnage for a bankrupt RR. They wanted to stay out of Conrail but joined per force at the last minute. Too bad.

Sad to see former Lackawanna E8s downgraded to freight service and looking very shabby, too. Looked like oil leaks on the sides.

the trains are great, but that fake projector noise ruins the show. white noise would be better.

I can't please everyone. I hate setting films to music, ditto with inputting non authentic train sounds. I get complaints if I post movies with no audio, so projector sounds it is.
