REALLY, the music, in my opinion, is so not necessary, it kind of takes some of the attention away from the video and the narration.

Big Mike Bednar adds so much to the videos, check out his interview with Jerry Hoare, excellent look into the job. He was there to see many years of history, and he's a very nice person. I applaud John Pechulis for having Mike narrate, it makes the videos!

Those big EL SD45’s looked awesome-that paint scheme looked just right on them. See a pair of those whipping around one of EL’s overbuilt superelevated curves, that was big time railroading.

I used to ride the EL commuter trains on the Main Line and Bergen Line in the 60s and 70s. For a while I’d catch trains out of Goshen NY; all heading to Hoboken with a change to either the ferry or the PATH to Downtown NYC. So good to see these videos!!

i thought the ferry sunk in the mid 50s? Used to ride the suzieQ to hackensack to visit grandma, we lived in Brooklyn, always asked to ride the ferry.

❤️ Love the voice on the running commentary! The Erie Lackawanna has become one of my favorite railroads. The EL and I both have the same birth date - October 17th 1960. I'm thankful that I'm still around and that we can still find parts of the EL that are still around. Inspired by this video I'm modeling the Phoebe Snow. Just got an E-8 from Life Like and some rivarossi Passenger cars. The passenger cars are labeled Lackawanna but it's a start! Hopefully I'll be able to build an accurate rain even if (God Willing) I have to purchase brass. Thank you again for the posting and inspiration!! Sincerely, David 😷 in Chicago

I have very pleasant memories of riding the Phoebe Snow from Corning NY to Hoboken, then the LIRR out to visit family on Long Island. My favorite part of the trip (as a 10-year-old) was going out to the platform at Hoboken and savoring the diesel exhaust while we waited for departure. Of course, nothing could beat the view from the observation car forward as we passed through the Delaware Water Gap. Train travel was such an adventure!

Great video as always. Brings me back to 1967 when I got my DL and head up to Port Jervis area on a weekend. Then I put four years in the Navy and picked up railfanning again when I got out. The Bergen line ran adjacent to my parents house in Wallington, so I didn't really have to travel.

From what I've read, Erie Lackawanna was set to join the Chessie System, but didn't happen for some reason(s). The 1972 hurricane certainly destroyed a lot of their trackage and not financially viable to rebuild. It resisted joining Conrail, but that's where it ended up. They lost a lot of the coal business, but got some of it back, getting it away from Penn Central due to PC's woeful track conditions, and they began generating a lot of truck trailer traffic. I love their paint scheme.

EL and DH were holdings of DERELCO which was owned by NW. this is why former EL U33Cs and SDP45s were sent to Roanoke after CR no longer wanted them. NW bought them but they ran on EL. EL had a much better chance of going NW, but this was not meant to be.

@@jeffreymcfadden9403 Read in Trains Magazine long back, that N&W personnel referred to EL as, "the Erie Lackamoney," lol.

The hurricane put it into bankruptcy, along with Lehigh Valley, as I remember. I think the problem with Chessie was over labor agreements. Conrail didn't really want it, but was forced to take it.

I remember riding the Phoebe Snow as a college student in upstate NY, The observation car was a great place to have a scotch and watch the scenery go by, then the steward would come in with his chimes announcing lunch, remember sitting in the Scranton depot during lunch. I've surprised the staff at the hotel/restaurant there now about having lunch at the same spot forty years before ("this wasn't here then" was the reply-- I'd explain). Why does the upper tier in NY get train service (without even a snack car) while Binghamton/Elmira are left without? What happened to the stewards with the Amtrak takeover? the sleeping car porters was a little secret among the black community, a good white salary at a time when that rarely happened for blacks. Furthermore, back then food on trains was good, not so on Amtrak. I rode the Super Chief before Amtrak too, nice dining while crossing the Prairie.

Do the geeps and alco road switchers have dual control stands? I see some running long hood forward and others nose first when running passenger trains.
