Ernest Borgnine talks with interviewer Alan K. Rode about Bad Day at Black Rock, Spencer Tracy, Marty, and Lee Marvin at the screening of Pay or Die in Palm Springs in May, 2010.
Ernest Borgnine was probably 90 here (actually 93!). Amazing man. I met him a few years later. He stood up reached out and shook my hand. IRON GRIP. He was the warmest, kind man to his fans
Damn right. Was so pleased to find out years later that Ernest Borgnine had won the academy award. I had finally seen Marty on TV in the 70's and he was great. "Dogs like us"...ha ha.... You're no dog Ernie 👏
I was a kid when McHale's navy was on tv and it was one of my fave shows...it wasn't until I was much, MUCH older that I came to understand what a truly great actor, and American, Mr. Borgnine was.
The Oscar that Ernest won, in 1955, was for best actor in 'Marty', Spencer Tracy was nominated for the same award in the same year for 'Bad Day at Black Rock'.
Man, as if I didn't like Ernest Borgnine BEFORE this clip... He totally takes over the whole thing - wonderful anecdotes, fabulous guy!!! And, of course, a great movie, most definetly. And superb soundtrack, too.
What a delightful man. If only all 90+ year olds could have "che gioia vivere." Your audience really loved this too, Alan. Congrats and thanks for posting these videos.
E.B. just seemed like the kind of guy you'd want to spend time with. I can see myself sitting on a boat, fishing and having a few beers, laughing and just shooting the breeze. What a nice man.
If you love Ernie , watch his r v videos where discovery channel films his motor home travels across the heartland the more rural he got the happier he became on the side of the road in farm country Iowa he says smell that air isn’t That beutiful clean air no smog .
Dispite Mr Borgnine being a great actor i always like to mention these guys along with Marvin and several others did their war service which for me was their greatest roles but I agree Ernest was brilliant and should have had many more sensative roles but I suppose his looks was bound to lean more to playing the heavy. Bad day still for me is one of the greatest films made & it was the Baddies that made it What a team
Lee B I know what ya sayin mate I got Mad Respect for actor's who actually fought in the war or a war, not coz I think wars cool or any dumb shit like that, it's because they have been there seen it done it and come out the other side, they've got my Ultimate Respect.Jimmy Stewart James Stewart, quiet guy even in interviews,He woz a Bomber Pilot he was there and I got nothing but Respect for that guy
I read that on the set of Bad Day at Black Rock Spencer Tracey wanted to be referred to as Mr Tracey. Interesting how after all these years Ernest still refers to him as such in this interview.
Spencer Tracy was good, but Ernie was better IMO. He covered all the bases, comedy, drama, slapstick, sports (Lombardi) whatever. I've been watching him with his son Chris as they travel the midwest in Ernie's huge RV bus called the SunBum. Check it out on Utube. He was such a down to Earth man, real class all the way.
I guess it's to do with the age of the interviewers but Ernie is NEVER asked about The Vikings which was an amazingly popular film when it first came out and went down a storm with me and my school mates.
