MURDER OF CROWS etymology: Crows will sometimes hold "bird meetings" (no other word for it) and attack one of their own. It's believed to be a territorial thing (think: wolves), and thus a group of crows have/can/will murder another crow. A word to describe a group of something is known as a COLLECTIVE noun. There's no set rule for determining a collective noun, it's just what becomes accepted. Some collective nouns: a RAFTER OF TURKEYS. a CLOWDER or POUNCE of cats (Hi to Tizzy, Charlotte, et al.), a SCURRY of squirrels. The collective noun for noir movie lovers is a DURYEA of noir movie lovers.
Was the second film where she gets away with it Presumed Innocent? As a millennial, a Kids in the Hall rerun spoiled the movie for me 25 years before I ever watched it.
No women making films in the classic period? What about Ida Lupino? Admittedly, she didn’t make any overtly lesbian films but in any movie she directed or played in, there was a suggestion of the full range of women’s experience.
Oh, and there's a song on Springsteen's The Ghost of Tom Joad based on Jim Thompson's The Killer Inside Me. ("My Best Was Never Good Enough:"). I think Nebraska (about Charlie Starkweather and Caril Fugate probably qualifies, too).
"A silence of nuns" - best collective noun! Noir friends, we need a collective noun for film noirs! "A murder of noirs" ? -- already taken for crows. "A shadow of noirs"? "A dark/darkness of noirs"? Please post your suggestions here.
Female Investigator: The Seventh Victim - Kim Hunter's character investigates the disappearance of her sister. It's a Val Lewton/Mark Robson horror-noir that I would say more than qualifies to be in a list of noirs about non-professional investigators that end up in investigative cases that also happen to be female.
A "murder of crows" according to the OED dates back to the 15th c. and may be an allusion to “the crow’s traditional association with violent death” or “its harsh and raucous cry.” In folklore, flocks of crows held trials to judge and punish members of the flock that had transgressed. If found guilty, they would be “murdered” by the flock.
She has such a wonderful voice, just as her grandfather did. I hadn't watched this film because the plot sounds so grim, but the clips make me want to look for it now.
Think The Novel The Black Dahlia such a masterpiece that ANY movie 🎥 made from it (no matter how good or bad you may think it is) is a positive and a collectors item for The Black Dahlia Novel fan!!!!!
Respect Dave but he always says odd things like he didn't quite get Eugene O' Neil or he didn't quite get Dashielle Hammet what's not to get in the masterpieces LongDaysJourneyIntoNight or The Maltese Falcon??!!!
She and Guy Williams were NOT having an affair! Shame on you for trying to slander their characters. June is still alive. She could sue you for libel, smart aleck!
I HATED that episode!! They should have used the script as toilet paper instead of putting on TV! I'm glad June & company have acsense of humor about it. But I feltnit really degraded the show AND THE NOBLE CAST -- June and Guy Williams!!
Loved her short visit to IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE!!! with the passing 😢 of Barbara Rush, she is the LAST surviving main member of that wonderful film!! God bless her!! Live long n prosper Kathleen!! Your fans love you!!!! Love, Nicholas
What a charming man, fine actor (who can forget him as Dr. Nolan in "Dead Poets Society"?) and wonderful raconteur who obviously held his audience in thrall. How nice to have had him for 106 years.
What a great interview with a sincere sounding granddaughter. Edward G Robinson is one of my favorite actors. Never been disappointed with any of his films!
This was a great interview with Francesca Robinson! She's a wonderful woman. Her grandfather was one of the finest actors in the history of cinema, and a great man. It was interesting to hear what some of Edward G. Robinson's favorite roles were. What they said is true, he never gave a bad performance and could always steal the show in any movie. Black Tuesday is a great underrated gem in his career, glad it's getting attention now. Thanks, Film Noir Foundation.
I enjoyed The Man in the Back Seat more than Strongroom. I thought some of the cutting between the vault and the robbers' plight was a bit fatty around the edits. There's no fat in 'Back Seat' - there's no time for it! You'll find some cyclical stuff (I use that word instead of "repetitive") but that's part of its panic. It was my favorite first time watch last year.
Eddie I’ve been watching noir alley since it started. What has happened. Are you purposely showing the worst films that aren’t noir. Is this a long joke????? Thank goodness for movies tv network
