Harwell made his major league debut in 1948 after becoming the only broadcaster who ever figured in a baseball trade. Earl Mann, President of the Atlanta Crackers, agreed to let him go to Brooklyn if Branch Rickey would send Montreal catcher Cliff Dapper to Atlanta to manage the club. Harwell also worked for the New York Giants and for the Baltimore Orioles before coming to Detroit in 1960.
Harwell's two biggest thrills as an announcer were Bobby Thomson's playoff homer in 1951 and Hoyt Wilhelm's 1958 no-hitter against the Yankees. Harwell was doing the first coast-to-coast telecast of a major sporting event when Thomson connected. Ernie remembers blurting "It's gone" as Thomson swung, and then sweating it out as he waited for the ball to clear the fence. His excellent account of Wilhelm's no-hitter is in the Hall of Fame's library, as is his well-known essay, "Baseball-A Game for All America," a tribute to baseball.
Harwell places "wearability" at the top of his list of requisites for broadcasting success. "You're visiting so many homes for three hours every day or night that you have to be yourself."

my Dad used to watch the Tigers on TV. He would put the radio on top of the tv, turn the volume on the tv down, and listen to Ernie Harwell.

I was fortunate to meet Ernie in 1988. I was attending a Tiger Fantasy camp in Lakeland Florida. The first night at the hotel about 8 of us were playing catch in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn. This older man walked up and was watching us throw the ball back and forth. Then I recognized him, I immediately stopped throwing the ball to go over and say hello. That voice, "oh dont stop I dont mean to disturb what your doing, it looks like your getting ready for tomorrow." I just had to tell him that when my family moved away from Detroit in 1968 that his voice helped sooth the homesick feeling I had living so far away. Even though we were 600 miles away We could pick up the games at night on the radio I had under my pillow. He was so gracious.

What a great speech. Ernie Harwell, by all accounts, was one of the great human beings of our time. The fact that he was (is) a Hall of Fame broadcaster only adds to his luster.

In 2007, I interviewed Mr. Harwell for approximately 30-40 minutes. I have it on a CD. He was a true class act! If you're interested contact me.
