What is an erythropoietin (EPO) test?
The erythropoietin (EPO) test checks the levels of EPO in the blood. EPO is a hormone that makes red blood cells (RBCs). It is made by the kidneys when oxygen levels in the body are low. RBCs contain hemoglobin, which binds oxygen. Increasing EPO levels helps restore oxygen levels in the body.
Once secreted, it travels through the blood to the bone marrow, where red blood cells are made. If the lungs are unable to supply enough oxygen to the body, the kidneys respond by increasing EPO levels in the body. Increasing EPO levels also increases the number of red blood cells in the blood.
People with poorly functioning kidneys do not make enough EPO. Such people usually suffer from anemia.
On the other hand, kidney tumors can cause excessive production of EPO, leading to conditions such as polycythemia vera and high blood pressure.
In certain bone marrow disorders, even if the kidney produces enough EPO, it still does not produce enough red blood cells. Therefore, testing the level of EPO in the blood helps in diagnosing various health conditions.
Why is an EPO test done?
If a doctor notices certain symptoms in a person, he may ask for an EPO test. EPO tests may be needed in the following situations:
If a complete blood count shows that the RBC level, hemoglobin or hematocrit value in a person's body is inadequate or abnormal.
To find out the cause of anemia
As part of the diagnosis of bone marrow disorders, especially when a person has a high number of red blood cells (polycythemia or erythrocytosis).
To check EPO levels in people suffering from kidney disease
EPO is also used by sportsmen to enhance their sports performance. That is why this test is also recommended to sportsmen as a dope testing.
