Great idea! I have read a few of the forum members use the last 1/4 of a pop can to use both Esbit and liquid fuel. One way is for liquid then flip the can over for solid fuel. The supports is must if you actually heating water that way. Water doesn’t have the dead air space that food has.
They can be used with wood without modification. The windscreen/supports aid mostly in stabilizing the “pot”. If you are considering purchasing one I would recommend the medium. It accommodates the largest range of pot sizes. Without the windscreen installed you can feed sticks in from both sides at once. No problem, if you have any questions just let me know!
When I ran out of fuel tabs once I just lit tinder in the base of the ‘stove’, lit it, and piled twigs across, just keeping enough space to put my pot on top.
