Magician and escapologist Matt Johnson rates nine escape scenes in movies and TV shows, such as "The Prestige" and "The Suicide Squad," for realism.
Johnson discusses the accuracy of escape scenes in "The Office" S3E18 (2007); "Breaking Bad" S5E6 (2012); "Taken 3" (2014), starring Liam Neeson; and "The Suicide Squad" (2021), with Margot Robbie. He also comments on magician escapes from "The Prestige" (2006), "Arrested Development" S2E4 (2004), and "Now You See Me" (2013). Johnson analyzes "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" (1989), and "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" (1991).
Johnson has performed all around the world and now lives in Vancouver, Canada. He has been performing magic and escapes for more than 30 years and is famous for dangerous stunts involving water tanks and saws. Johnson reached the semifinals of "Britain's Got Talent" in series 12 and competed in "America's Got Talent" in 2021. He has toured twice with The Illusionists.

In the suicide squad the scene where she unlocks herself was 100% real. Margot Robbie was asked to do it as a joke by the director. They did it in one take. The only part that she didn’t do was strangle the guy. The director even stated that he was upset when they recorded it because they didn’t get a clear enough shot of her face during the recording because it made it look like a stunt double did the trick.

The Robie bit deserves an 8 at least, because while she didn't thigh strangle that dude, she 100% did actually unlock the lock with her foot. Robie was a gymnast and trapeze artist before she was an actress and is still a gifted athlete

Gifted athletes or not, the strength disparity between men and woman is huge. My daughter is a gymnast and has competed on the national level. She is half my age, a base (the one who throws the flyers) she cannot beat me arm wrestling using both arms. Another example would be Texas high school boys squat record is more then the women’s world record.

It has been reported that Margot Robbie really did the stunt. I eat she really raise her legs to her arms while hanging. I don't think anyone has suggested that she actually flipped a key into cuffs, or that she was actually hanging from the handcuffs to begin with. Edit: chain and padlocks rather than handcuffs.

Linda Hamilton deserves a 10/10, because she actually picked the locks on set. She learned the technique to pick both the strap lock and the deadbolt, and that is what we see on screen.

only the scene itself got rated... not the preparations that go into them otherwise you would have to rate the "chapter" of the film. Though looking into it, without interviewing and questioning the staff who made the film chapter you wouldnt know how much preperation was needed to make it and that is something that they are probably not capable of, so just because u like that film the most, doenst mean there was less effort used or it deserves a better rating.

@@davidsumner7604 I've picked locks using a paperclip after months of work with real lockpicks, this is absolutely doable, the most unrealistic thing is her making a rake out of a paperclip rather than a single pin pick. That'd be a trick I'd love to learn to do without any tools.

The Margot Robbie scene deserves at least an 8 if you want to factor in that she couldn't overpower and kill the guy like she did, or a 10 if you go just on her escaping. She was able to actually do the whole thing, and the only reason the quick cut happens is because when she was doing it was because her costume blocks her face, and the audience would likely rather see the key going in the lock.

wish he’d remembered that lifting your legs against gravity without using your hands is a lot easier if you were born female. If you are born male, you have no choice but to deadlift your legs with your abs. Your pelvic bone isn’t heavy enough to press against for leverage and your thighs aren’t strong enough to lift themselves. Still super impressive she got that key in the lock with her foot though. It’s hard getting your foot that close to your face, and also hard to aim feet accurately.

For anyone interested, you can find the footage of Joseph Burrus death online easily. It's a bit sickening, honestly. As Johnson said, he did the trick as he'd done previously, in a perplex coffin and buried under a fair few feet of dirt. But because it was being broadcast, as well as his pride and desire of surpassing Houdini, he decided to add a layer of cement on top of the dirt layer, not considering cement is much heavier than dirt. Literally seconds after pouring and spreading the cement, the perplex shattered, collapsing under around 7 tons of dirt and cement. From the surface, all you see is the wet concrete layer drop about a foot suddenly. What's even worse is, cement dries from the bottom up. In the video, a reporter actually mentioned this to Burrus and, after the collapse, you can see people having to heave and throw large chunks of hardened cement as they dug him up. Meaning he couldn't have dug his way out even if the trick had gone to plan.

Whats the point in her actually hanging durning those scenes if we can't even see her hanging? Would be a lot easier to do a close up and make it look like she's hanging for those scenes, wouldn't have looked any different from the final product.

Houdini very much did hide keys in his mouth. He had a dental bridge for some missing teeth that he redesigned to have a hidden drawer in it with picks/keys/etc for different performances. I saw it at the Houdini museum in NYC, it was super cool

@@danitho yes. It was actually designed to be pretty easy to slide open, and with his escapes he always made it so that it wouldn't be too difficult to bend over to drop a pick or key into his hands, when he couldn't just reach into his mouth directly.

For the famous bridge-drop escape when he was wearing nothing but his bathing suit and his confinements, I believe he actually hid a key in a self-inflicted wound in his foot and then allowed it to heal and then reopened it to retrieve the gold-coated (so his body wouldn’t identify it as an infection and attack)key..which, to me, is some next level ish.

the locks on the chains looks like the cheap locks that you can unlock by using a sharp pull. I know because I heard something about it and tried it myself on a key lock and it worked even though the combo locks are easier

Drowning is less of a big deal than it sounds if you have staff on hand. Pretty much anyone trained at all to hold their breath will not actually get any water in their lungs, the brain naturally knows to hold the breath, even unconscious. Effectively, what will happen is you will pass out, the safety teams will bust you out of whatever you’re in, and as long as they do that in under a few minutes, worst case scenario you’ll wake up with the terminal gasp (a last ditch attempt from the brain to get oxygen before it dies, wherein it foregoes any safety and just takes a giant breath), and you’ll only sustain temporary brain damage at worst. The only way people like this could ever die or even get seriously injured from drowning is by not having someone capable of getting them out of the water on hand.

I’ve drowned once in my life and that was horrifying enough. I actually spent 4 years putting myself through intense swim training in order to make sure my body could handle intense waters capable of drowning me. Now I can swim using only one arm and nothing more.

Everyone’s got a good point about Margot Robbie, the guy is judging the position she’s in with unlocking it as himself, but Harley Quinn as a character does have incredible strength, flexibility, and precision because she was a gymnast. A normal escape artist might struggle a lot more but a character like Harley is the most likely to succeed (and apparently Robbie actually did unlock it which proves the point lol)

I think he is still on point about how easy she got the key in there in the movie though. Yes she did this for real on set, but I am willing to bet there is quite a bit of moving the key around with her foot before finding the keyway that was cut out.

With regards to the Terminator 2 improvised pickset; Adam Savage used the workings of an incandescent bulb to pick a lock in Mythbusters. It took a while and the metal was soft enough that he hammered it flat with his boot, but he did it

When you were reviewing Indie's rope escape it brought to mind that wonderful scene from 'Dennis' when Christopher Lloyd's character is given rope tying lessons from Dennis. He said he wouldn't be able to tie him up because the rope was too thick and his legs were too little. I'd love to see that reviewed! lol.

The Now You See Me scene is clearly filmed in such a way that either the key was simply left in the lock so she could sort of palm the keyturn to open the lock or the lock was literally just left unlatched in such a way that it would look locked at first glance. However, there actually are super-low quality locks on the market that can be just jiggled open. I dunno if being submerged would improve their function...but being of such low quality it probably wouldn't even matter.

The easiest way to break a zip tie that's fastened to a solid surface is to hit it with something solid, a hammer, pipe, wrench. Basically, pull it snug, then hit it solid and it'll crush the plastic to the point of breaking or at least thin enough that very little force is needed to snap it.

08:00 should be 10/10 because she legit picked those REAL locks by REALLY using a couple of bent paperclips. She studied with an Israeli instructor to learn Krav Maga and how to pick locks just so she could do these scenes in T2. Refusing to let someone else do it or use special effects which is why her full face is on screen the whole time. (God, is Tom Cruise the only actor nowadays that puts in this kind of effort anymore?)

In my opinion, picking locks isn't nearly as hard as anyone assumes it to be, or thinks it should be. It's scarily easy in some regards. Well, it's hard if you do it the right way, but there's much easier ways. I learned with proper tools and a clear lock. The main thing I learned from that, is that finding each pin's proper place is difficult, and time consuming. Instead, raking easier, and in my experience, much faster. Essentially, your running your pick across the pins in quick succession while applying light pressure with the "pry bar". You're not trying to find each pins position, more so you're trying all the pins more often. What it lacks in precision, it makes up for in repetition. Once I learned, I started trying diy picks, which took longer, but all still worked. My best combo was a hair pin, and a safety pin. You can also make something called a bump key really easily, and lastly, you can just buy a locksmith kit. It's funny that when people learn you can pick locks easily, they get somewhat worried, yet nobody ever thinks about professional locksmiths being criminals.

I learned to pick locks on that same training lock he showed. After getting that down, I picked up several "Master" locks and practiced until I could get them within a couple of seconds. Then I started practicing on my door. I've now gotten proficient enough that I can pick pretty much any standard lock within a few seconds. Why? Just a skill I wanted to have. It's let me get into my home and car several times when I've locked myself out...otherwise, it's one of those skills I can break out at parties.

It is funny that they use the clip from Sarah Conor (Linda Hamilton) escaping from the mental hospital in Terminator 2 because Linda Hamilton actually learned how to pick locks and that is a take of her actually picking that lock. They speak about her dedication to the role in the making of Terminator 2.

Movies almost always use the same locking picking technique for a door. I've never seen anyone use a bump key method. Also, in the 80s there was a show (can't remember which one it was), with a nerdy, scientist sidekick who invented a canned foam that he sprayed into a lock. It was thick enough foam to raise all the pins to their correct positions before it 'quick dried', and he was able to turn the lock with the can. I'd always wondered if anything like that is really possible, but I guess there isn't a viable way for the foam to determine the height each pin needs to move to. Was still a cool idea for the time.

5:50 -- you can undo a zip tie like that by using the end of the zip tie as a shim the way he did with the handcuffs. A tiny screwdriver or even a pen will work to retract the latch.

As far as the zip tie goes, you could use a pin to do something similar to the handcuffs. There is just a plastic tong holding it in place, just have to pull it back. I have done it before.

The scene where the girl picks a lock with a hairpin can actually be done in real life. I never did myself but I saw a video teaching how to do it and the person used the same practice lock.

It is possible to shim a zip tie. The locking mechanism on a zip tie is pretty much the same as a set of handcuffs i.e a ratchet system. The only difficulty for Walter White would be finding a tool thin enough to use. Linda Hamilton was bang on the money with her makeshift lock pick. I've tried the classic "making a pick and tension tool from paper clips" thing, I failed miserably. While the pick (a rake) kind of did it's job, I just couldn't get the tension tool strong enough to be useful. So, while I have no doubt Ms. Hamilton picked that lock, I suspect the tools she used weren't made from your standard paperclip.

I don't know about shimming a pair of zip cuffs but the serrated shim in Taken has two main uses. Shimming police cuffs and cutting through zip tie cuffs. The Modern Rogue actually sells a ring that you can hide the shim in and on their channel they have a video of them using the shim for both. Takes a minute to cut the zip ties but once you get a small nick in them they break apart pretty quickly.

"Sapper cuffs" using 550 chord if properly monitord for tightness are really heard to escape from ironically largely because of the fact that when you are leading some one in them you are supposed to be constantly jerking at them to keep people from being able to manipulate them

I mean, even tho this dude seems actually amazing and I'd love to hear more from him, I actually got two things from these reviews I can "debunk"?? I think that's the word? Well, first, it is possible to unlock a door or just lock pick anything with hairclips, I've never done it (even tho it would be great to learn!) But I've seen people do it in front of me when I lost the key to my school locker! A friend just got one hairclip and the lock was open, so yes the Linda Hamilton take it's possible And two, even though you're very right about lifting a 6+ft beefy guy with your legs, the lock with the feet also is very possible! I think it already has been said but Robie is a former gymnastic and trapeze so already some flexibility to the action, but it's actually possible to develop that type of (I really don't know if dexterity is the right word but that's what my English limits to lmao) dexterity in your toes :D I know cause I tend to pick and do things with my feet all the time, it's something fun to develop and learn, so those two are pretty much possible 🐢

not mentioned about the cuffs is.. That its pretty much standard police procedure now days to lock the cuffs. No shim will work when the cuffs have been locked. It would require a key.
