That miniature of the highway collapsing still looks really damn good. I wish miniatures were used more in modern movies. Very few directors use them. (I'm glad Christopher Nolan still insists on using them.) Sometimes they can look wonky, but if they're big enough, they're shot at the right angles and they use the right frame-rates... they can look perfect and fool the eye. And I'm not saying that to crap on CGI. CGI is a wonderful tool and can be used to bring impossible things to life. But I prefer it when movies reserve it for things that can't be done practically or with miniatures.

Not sure why the rating of this movie is so low... I mean the CGI were shit, but the story was entertaining, and Russell gave a hell of a performance and so many memorable scenes and quotes... compared to some Oscar winning films back then that no one remembers now
As far as Oscar winning movies from that year, Fargo was really good and memorable. The Winner English Patient, fair point. Most folks would probably know that film if they were familiar with Oscar nominations in general rather it being a popular movie within the zeitgeist of the time that carries over and has a good rewatch quality.
The thing was, Escape from New York was basically the same story, its the same thing all over again in Escape from LA, nothing more and nothing less. The only thing different was that Kurt Russell really liked playing Snake Plissken that he wanted to do it again, so he gave it his all this time around.
John Carpenter apparently got phone-calls from people, in the USG, after 9/11, as apparently EFNY was used as a rebuttal to the assertion that "nobody could have predicted a terrorist hijacking an airliner over the United States", and thus was considered predictive, in regards what happened. The fact that he predicted 20+ years earlier is the festive part.

Well, escape from NY shows America is facing extreme social and economic problems and then all of the sudden one of the country's big cities is destroyed. I can see how the population may get terrified to the point of accepting something like this. Besides, amendments to the constitution have nothing to do with the will of the people or elections anyway. I have a feeling not a lot of people supported the 18th amendment for example.
There's also the fact that Jerry Falwell was born in Lynchburg. Its not an accident that the president is an evangelical in this movie. Carpenter always distrusted evangelicals.

They have two daughters one who turns on her family is named Utopia and the other who commits suicide is most likely Arcadia. The new capital of the United States is Lynchburg, Virginia. All very interesting background on the President in Escape From LA.
That is interesting. I've wondered about how the Presidential terms worked in the Escape timeline? If its similar to ours, then the President that Donald Pleasance played would have served right after the 1991 Police Force was formed, and would have been in office from 1993-2000. Like that of Clinton. Giving President Adam no incumbent to campaign against. Although its kinda interesting to think of John ( I think that was the President's first name in Escape NY ), and Adam running against and debating one another....
