Safety behaviors are anything that a person does in order to help themselves feel safer, without having any substantial impact on actually making them any safer. Safety behaviors are a key factor that fuel and maintain anxiety disorders and it is important to target and address safety behaviors when treating different anxiety conditions such as Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Specific Phobias, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Health Anxiety. This video discusses examples of safety behaviors in all of these conditions to help you get a better understanding of what these safety behaviors look like and how they are fuelling your anxiety.

The person you described putting on the imaginary brake as a passenger is me 💯. My husband tailgates and his driving in general scares me. It is a automatic reflex action. Many times I just close my eyes and pray that we don't have a wreck but it doesn't reduce my fear. I try to avoid going anywhere with him in a car if possible.

My pa used to drive like that too. When my ma and me were in the car with him it would turn into a shouting match to try and get him to slow down/pay more attention to the road. So yeah, I can feel your pain. I'm still here to tell the tale, luckily. Some folks there's just no telling, I'm afraid. 😟

This is very common in fear of motor vehicle travel. I'm planning on doing a series of videos on that in the future, so please keep an eye out for them.

I have health anxiety and was having stomach pain. I told my husband I need to go to the hospital, he told me it's just my anxiety and gas. Well I forced him to bring me ( I have panic attacks and don't drive) and I found out I had a blood clot in my spleen. Sometimes you should worry because it could be real and not just your anxiety.

...Yes..Im a Big Believer I if someone is worried about specific health issues to always get looked at by a Dr...have them run all the tests they need to and after the results come in and hopefully things are good..Then rest assured health anxiety should start to go away...we are stronger then we know

Oh my, I did not realize how many safety behaviors I do, at least 1 from each category. I need to find freedom from this viscious cycle.

I'm a bad one for safety behaviors. I get a lot of stomach pain and sensitivity from anxiety so I take a lot of antacids (and the odd lorazepam). Unfortunately, I signaled to my brain that I can't handle anxiety and that it's dangerous.

I'm doing all of these almost! None actually keep me safe. Im a big social person but i notice if i get upset or im in an uncomfortable situation heart races. And my voice sakes. I'm a stay at home Mom and I'm avoiding working due to my anxiety.

Omg the little bottle of ativan!! You got me right there! I don't walk out my house without it in my bra!! Bc if i get locked out I'll have a panic attack and die! And the coffee! I'm sitting here contemplating whether or not to drink a cup bc its 2pm and my panic is way worse at night... I'm definitely in the right place. Thank you! Ok back to the video🧡

Could legs that refuse to walk be due to anxiety? Shaky Throughout the body?
@DrRamiNader
@DrRamiNader Год назад
Anxiety can certainly cause increased muscles tension which can lead to shakiness or sensation of heaviness in a person's legs.

Are safety behaviours kinda just another name for OCD? What if I have Agoraphobia and use safety behaviors, is it okay for me to do exposure therapy along with safety behaviors so long as I am still out of my comfort zone and am planning to do exposure therapy for the safety behaviors later on?
@DrRamiNader
@DrRamiNader 11 месяцев назад
One way of thinking about the compulsions in OCD is that they are essentially safety behaviors targeting the intrusive thoughts.
