So many astronauts talk about how travelling into space gives them a new appreciation for life on Earth. I wonder whether an extended mission to Mars would make someone yearn for life back on Earth? I personally don't think I could get over the travel time...

Our world have many beautiful oceans, lakes, rivers, mountains, green grassing lands, frozen parts, blue sky and alot of others, I was born there but I will living here for until we find out a new life support planet"

There is no place like home, the Earth. Take good care of it. But that doesn’t mean we won’t want to venture elsewhere for adventure. It’s amazing how far we come and how much more we still need to go before we can have the journey to land a human on Mars.

It's much easier to fix Earth than living on Mars.

I think we should start using that 3-d printing technique here on earth to make super efficient and strong homes. Basalt and PLA are in no short supply here on earth. I’m quite sure the cost could be cheaper than a traditional brick and stud home. Likely cheaper than metal stud homes as well. Seeing as basalt is one of our hardest stone materials I imagine the R factor would be excellent. I know the ideas are for use in space, but why not take advantage here work out any bugs and have the process flawless and as affordable as possible. When the time comes to employ that technology on Mars. Seems, like a Win Win! Peace and Love

Another huge problem is also that an extended stay in space has repercussions when you come back to gravity too. Many get bloated limbs, have trouble standing, experience dizziness etc. Many also have problems with their sight getting blurry in space and things like that. All of those things takes quite a long time to recover from. Not a good thing to have to deal with first thing on a different planet exactly.

Imagine being blessed with an already wonderful planet with oxygen, atmosphere, water, and good soil and just slowly ruining it.. Y'all wouldn't have to settle in a distant dying planet if you just didn't destroyed the perfect one. Then, in the late 1969--just 12 years later--the first moon landing happened. People were watching on outdoor screens like in Times Square around the world. It was unparalleled!!

I can't think of a possible situation where living on Mars would be a better outcome than living in a post apocalyptic Earth.

How rediculous, we have a living planet and insted of fixing a few problems we think we can turn a dead rock with no magnetic field into a habitable planet...give me a break.

I think people forget that we currently don't have the technology that can withstand space debris going thousands of mph. It's not possible for us to live on anything other then a planet like ours.

Human beings' home is the earth. It is located in the so-called "Goldilocks zone", where it is not too hot and it not too cold and where water can exist in its liquid form to support life. Mars is not in the Goldilocks' zone. It is too cold for human beings to live normally and naturally without any life supports like oxigent tanks and special clothes. Human beings do not belong to Mars. We may dream on many things, but living in Mars is something which is too far from reality.

Yes we can't even look after a planet that;s basically is a masterpiece in every imaginable way and somehow you belief that we can travel about 130 million miles away to a planet completely inhospitable to life in every way? Yes , no water or unattainable , ground sterile and impacted for any type organic growing , low gravity which will cause chronic bone loss and many other human illnesses , no oxygen , extreme cold with temperature variations of over 200 degrees at it's equator in a day with the average temperature of about -86 degrees and continually bombarded with high levels of radiation including solar flares . What a complete farce when we can't even prevent the destruction of a self sustaining planet.

This is a bit like the Easter Island civilization. When they cut all the trees, they lost their ability to make boats of wood and were unable to fish. This caused the end of the statue building culture from starvation. The bird man cult arose out of this. The bird man was a mythological figure that was going to take them off the island. He never came and the population crashed. The promise of colonizing Mars is a bit like the bird man cult of Easter Island.

The day we realize how amazingly good our own planet is, and feel the shame of how we destroy it everyday, that might save the human race! Going to Moon/Mars will never save the human race from its own stupidity. No one lives in Antarctica for long, and it is 100 times more hospitable than the other planets. That said, maybe seeing how bad the planets are, we learn to love our own.

I really wonder how setting on mars would affect the next generation that even have to grow up there? And while they probably have more than enough with making it physically liveable, I really hope they dont underestimate the importance of having something that makes life emotionally worth living, even long after the exitement of going to another planet fades. Will children have room to play? Do people have entertainment? And can they truly be social with each other? Will there ever be other animals than humans there? Life would be pretty sad without. Permanent living is very different from a temporary mission that each participant choose

Mars wont be for the rich initially this is a misconception. It will take decades or even centuries to terraform Mars. Initial Mars colonization will have tough hardworking human adventurers with particular skill sets such as Engineers, agricultural, biological specialists, medical personnel, scientists, IT experts and people with practical skills who can build and maintain structures to live in, solar panels and electric vehicles, etc...

They should spend all of the money on Earth and make it nice and safe again and don't let people starve and give all the homeless housing

It’s interesting to me that people believe that “post-apocalyptic” Earth would be less hospitable than space, the Moon, or Mars. Maybe the real point of this exercise is to develop technology to help us live on Earth in the future?

I would rather travel and see mountains and lakes in earth than travelling for weeks and months to see a planet just full of dust.

Why not use vr to mix work and exersize. Even practice simulated mars gravity on the trip while your checking instruments in another tab.
