There should be a strap holding the occupants head in line with the body. Riding a wave at speeds over 120mph with your body strapped in and your head flopping around loosely is just asking for spinal cord separation when you inevitably hit something solid like a building or rock face.
@Roaming_Wolf
@Roaming_Wolf 3 года назад
NASCAR came up with a solution to that after that famous driver died when he hit the wall, not to mention a full head helmet would be an awesome idea along with that neckbrace to make sure you don’t get a spinal cord injury. If you put all that on pause have just a small oxygen tank in there just in case it gets wedged under some thing, just insurance on top of insurance.

I think adding an inflatable flotation device to the exterior that activates from the inside would help. It would be positioned on the under side of the pod. If the pod is stuck under debris the flotation could help release it. It would also provide more stability on the surface of the water as well as lessen the force of impact. The pod would be safe enough to open once inflated and it’s floating. Also make it a fluoro glow in the dark colour to make it visible day and night and have a water proof map of frequent shipping routes and a gps and I’ll buy it lol

Lots of risk of head damage even if you're strapped in, especially if you get an impact on the orange that hits so hard it causes you to become unconscious. It should have a gimbal system where the inner cage is always upright unless you lock it in place. Also, I agree with others that the hatch should be upright, and there should be much more space inside to store rations and emergency supplies. As it is right now, it's pretty useless for 15 grand, especially without any GPS as standard.

This 100% needs improvements and major ones. It needs what I think is a interior balancing solution? Something to keep you upright at all times and not being thrown around upside and what not. Think gyrosphere from Jurassic World. Because surely even if you’re sitting inside it and getting tossed around from waves and the current and then colliding at high speeds with buildings and debri, it would eventually seriously injure or kill you. You’re essentially sitting in a tumble dryer being spun around, thrown from wall to wall continuously. Not only that but there’s the exposed supporting pole in the centre. I can’t imagine occupants would be able to stop themselves from head butting that in tumultuous currents. In fact it looks like she nearly did head butt it few times just from those baby waves caused by the speedboat. Overall, an amazing concept and I imagine with a lot more work that this could potentially become one of those inventions that becomes a must have for people in tsunami danger zones. But right now it needs work. The only difference I see is instead of drowning, you’re at risk of being beaten to death from inside a giant satsuma. As a non-engineer with absolutely no clue how any of this works I obviously have no knowledge on exactly what needs to be changed and included and how. But from the very minimum I’d want to include that GPS as a default part of the product. Some kind of oxygen tank or filtration system or what ever you’d need to make sure sufficient oxygen is available for the occupants to survive extended lengths of time. Helmets for obvious reasons. But also life jackets for emergency escape (just because it seems indestructible doesn’t mean something can’t go wrong. Better safe than sorry). Also compartments for things you don’t want just flying around in the pod with you. Last but not least, survival gear. Built in GPS. Med kits. Water and food packets. Solar stills. Collapsible fishing rods. And all such an array of things needed to survive at sea if your GPS fails or something.

Have an oxygen tank on board as a few people have mentioned to last a few hours or up to a day. I think most of the harm will be caused by being dragged inland and hitting object rather then the water itself.

things “designed to aerospace standards” dont really factor on surviving impact with very much, do they? really clever way to try and upsell the durability of this thing as if space shuttles dodge boulders all the time. i dont doubt it would survive space or high-altitude atmosphere but could it graze a rock at 80mph without rupturing?
@simonialei9020

I totally agree with you. the idea of this survival pod is like a safety shelter you have less then a minute to get to. The pod would most likely be located in the home or work. when the tsunami comes, it will bring large debris like cars, houses, trees. I wonder how strong this pod is when it gets swept into large debris. The test where it is dropped from a water fall does not replicate real life conditions. it does make a sensational youtube though. A better test would be to bring the pod to a rocky rushing riverbed and see how durable it is crashing into rocks as a proxy for tsunami debris. doing donuts around the pod just replicates the height of the waves in the ocean which assumes the pod is already in the ocean. dont need a $15000 pod to survive, a fishing boat out in the open sea is sufficient enough. the test do not support their claims of survival. I'm skeptical until I see further tests that replicate the actual conditions for the use of this pod.

honestly learn to weld. Do this your self for half the price. Make a system to store waste, like urine and feces. Elongate it to be a pill like shape. Add oxygen tanks, or some system to scrub CO2. Put food stores, and make a ball in the center of the pill shape that can freely move, with weights at bottom so its double protection, and you dont get thrown around. When massive wave is over, move to the outer shell. Would be cool to have some sort of hydralic arm system on the outside, so if you got stuck you could potentially move out from debris. Add a motor, or store paddles or a sail. This guy put like no effort of thought into this

I would think that building a series of under ground tunnels that exit as needed 25 feet or so above ground when the water subsides would be a better use of money and time. I know that it's also going to require serious construction costs, but if you live in a low coastal area, and have no high ground to escape to... wouldn't that be the best option? This floating device needs to be able to survive a boat ramming, or a house collapse to be simulate what it will need to endure.

The material and labor cost of welding a spherical frame into aluminum hemispheres together would be no more then a couple thousand dollars at the maximum. So for him to say $15,000 is ridiculous and a ripoff.

Im not a huge fan of doomsday preppers, but honestly if you live in a area with a high tsunami risk, i would say this is worth the investment. Put a gps locator in it, a 02 tank, and a neckbrace and maybe a few days food water in case it gets stuck. I think thats a reasonable investment.

The probability is that the Capsule would become engulfed by the tsunami debris field and be buried, submerged or trapped. It is preferable to have the hatch at the top and a gyro stabilized seat and cargo rack to keep the crew upright irrespective of the orientation of the Capsule. Crew should wear kayak type helmets and Nomex flight suits, balaclavas and gloves. Self survival equipment together with a GPS, PLB, Garmin Inreach and marine band 2 way radio should be included. Ditto food and water, etc. Self Extraction, Survival & Rescue should be expected, trained for and equipped for! The capsule air vents should be self sealing to prevent water ingress. These are a few of the points to be addressed in order for this to become a really viable tsunami survival system.

Needs to have inner chamber that rotate 360 so no matter the position the seating will always remain upright. Avoids being slosh & Rock around like an egg. As in this video ..

I don't see anything inside it that dampens impacts and isolates them from the occupant. If its all just rigid high-strength materials, those impacts will be transmitted into the rider and kill them. Same principle when it comes to car crashes. If the vehicle didn't crumple, it'd kill the occupants.

Questionable design. If you had to open the door in the middle of the water you would sink like a brick due to the water rushing in. He should have taken his aerospace background and researched how space capsules land in the water. They have deployable inflation bags, sea anchor, deployable life rafts plus automated communication and location devices. The waterfall stunt was for show, no real data. A true test would have been to throw it out in the ocean during a cat-4 storm and see if they can retrieve it after it passes by.(even better if the designers were inside) I would also try to simulate the oxygen consumption of 2 people during that time. The writer is not wearing a self inflating life preserver either, not smart. What if passenger had to bail out?

Of course it’s not a bullet it proof guarantee but it will give you a better survival percentage than not being init if you didn’t have time to evacuate.

also the passengers wouldnt be properly strapped in and bang their heads on the pole or get serious whiplash and break their necks. also the little windows were unnecessary and there should be more padding to prevent injuries.
@CabbageCorn

@@orionspants Still the same answer as before though isn't it, your going be dead either way if a Tsunami hit you but you will have a better chance in that then just being stood there.

Considering debris as large as ships and large barges are frequently part of the floating battering ram of the tsunami, at least close to the shore, this may be a bit on the lightweight side. The pod is definitely better than being unprotected, but it would crush like a ping-pong ball if it got between large objects tumbling along. Being encapsulated also removes your quick mobility essential for climbing onto structures that may keep you alive, nor would I want to be in one if caught in the frequently occuring floating infernos of debris and/or fuel that can get quite large, and quite hot. I would think the CG would be overwhelmed with emergency beacon calls after a basin wide tsunami, if even capable of receiving it or responding to them. I imagine it would not be pleasant being pulled 30 miles out to sea, and possibly stuck for days let alone longer in one of these, forced to perform lifes daily tasks and survive encapsulated. The "test" she went through is comparable to lightly touching a persons chest with a feather to simulate being shot. Regardless, I guess in truth I would rather be in one of these if stuck in a tsunami, than in the water without. The only sure way to survive a tsunami is to be out of its way. I probably would only buy one of these if I were filthy rich. Thankfully everywhere I have lived only filthy rich people can afford the waterfront property where one of these might be practical anyway. As for a large impact mega-tsunami this would likely only keep your remains after being pulverized into goo from being diffused into the ocean, maybe
