I had the Roland CM-32L which is like a MT-32 without the buttons and display. So cool! Also later had a Sound Blaster Pro installed and some Sierra games supported both simultaneously. In Space Quest IV after the bar scene you could have MT-32 music and also hear the sound effect of when the little alien vomits.

16:58 Woah! It occurs to me that in all my years of playing Sierra games (and watching others play them), I have *never* seen anyone choose the Restart option. Also, I didn’t know you could kill Roger with the steel plate. This is, indeed, a day to remember.

That it is, but there is literally nothing else to suggest that there is anything to do with the decoder ring or that you need to play astro chicken at all. Heck, I didn't even know about the buckazoids at first. Took me 25 years before I found them lol. It would have made more sense to me if the big M was the first place on the scan, and if the decoder ring had an astro chicken or scum soft label on it somewhere.

You berate yourself for rambling or mispronouncing words. As a counter argument, I would like to point out that I'm having a fantastic time watching this series and your commentary and knowledge of the history and trivia just add to the experience. So there is no need to tell yourself to talk less because there are more voices like mine saying no, that's not necessary. Thank you for another fun video :)

Good intro as put me in mind of my first sound card, the Gravis Ultrasound. A physically long card, having spoken to the vendor who assured me it would fit in my 386PC ATX mini, realised they lied and ended taking the case off, bending the front back in order to accommodate it. The thought of returning it never crossed my mind as owning a shiny new sound card was pretty exciting in those days, and one of the games that benefited from the new card was none other than Space Quest. Thanks for the memories!

Ah, the Gravis Ultrasound! A friend of mine had that and showed me DOOM. Holy shit. If Sierra were married to Roland, then id were definitely married to Gravis. DOOM sounded fantastic on the Ultrasound! I've never heard SQ3 with an Ultrasound, though.

@spacequesthistorian I've been a huge Space Quest fan since summer of '88. Just came across your videos, lots of fun nostalgia. I'm a bit late to the party, but I always thought the Aluminum Mallard, while a seemingly obvious play off of the Millennium Falcon, was more of a play off of the Spruce Goose since Aluminum/Spruce is a material and Mallard/Goose are more closely related fowl.
@spacequesthistorian

Mark Crowe doing the graphics in the first 3 games is so under-rated in a way. There's absolute consistency even across the change from AGI to SCI, the escape pod for example is recognizably the same one from the end of SQ2, and although he's a little more expressive, Roger too looks and moves exactly as he did before. I sometimes feel like other Sierra series had trouble maintaining that kind of similar look across games, because the graphics were so often done by new artists in every game.

And I meant to say that that thing about the accidentally hidden Soundblaster effects is amazing :) When you said that you'd be showing something interesting that wasn't in the original, I had thought it would be the undithered graphics - the way that the graphics are actually stored in more colours than EGA can handle, but that are still stored in the file and can be rendered without dithering via ScummVM and the like.
@spacequesthistorian
@spacequesthistorian 7 лет назад
Intriguing! I have switched to using ScummVM for episode 2, so I could get MT-32 music AND SoundBlaster effects at the same time. I noticed that option to use undithered graphics, but didn't enable it. Maybe it's worth doing so, anyway?

That's incredible about Supertramp - I had no idea about that! Something that I've been forced to admit in recent years is that Sierra were real pioneers in so many ways, even though I think that most of their games are unfair or actively hostile to the player and not very enjoyable for it. Out of all of them, though, I think the later Space Quests had the most... tolerable approach, treating you as part of the joke like an enthusiastic game show host. (That said, the generator bit can go and get fucked!) That said, the deaths got a lot more grisly here, with the added closeups - some of them remind me of the vast number of overly detailed Game Over FMVs from Fade to Black. I remember the one if you make a mistake when trying to blow a hole in the side of the garbage freighter being particularly bad. I love - and would have totally expected! - that you knew the exact locations to activate the grabber on the first try :)
@spacequesthistorian

Ohh, thanks for reminding me I missed the "sudden decompression sucks" death at the start! Yeah, that one is gruesome. Blue EGA guts all over the upholstery. I'll let you in on a secret: When I tested the game out (to see if the SoundBlaster effects were working properly), I got in the grabber and pressed the button on the wrong side to pick up the motivator. Made a mental note not to repeat that mistake when the camera was actually rolling. ;)

Nitpick from too many years later: The Gravis Ultrasound was reasonably priced. It was nowhere near as expensive as Roland's products. Gravis was trying to challenge Sound Blaster's dominance in everyday multimedia PCs by putting out a better-sounding card at a similar price. For that matter, when the GUS Max came out, it was (iirc) the cheapest wavetable MIDI option on the market, at least for a little while.

Not sure if someone has pointed this out yet, but you are incorrect in your statement that SQIII was the first Sierra game to have its soundtrack created by someone who was not an employee of Sierra. King's Quest IV beat it out by a year (1988), whose soundtrack was composed by Hollywood composer William Goldstein, who had been working in Hollywood composing music for various movies and TV shows since 1972. Of course, being a Roberta game, it HAD to be the first (not to mention the first game ever to support sound cards). :) I know you briefly mention it, but are you planning on going into details about the upgrade from AGI to SCI-0 and the differences between the two graphical engines and what they were capable of? Also, as far as how you're supposed to know where the generator is, there is a wire which connects the lights that leads off to that corner. If you follow it and type look lights and look wire, I believe it mentions the generator. Anyways, I look forward to more, as always!
@spacequesthistorian
@spacequesthistorian 7 лет назад
Of course King's Quest had to get in there before Space Quest - damn. ;) Thanks for the correction! In answer to your question, I wasn't planning on going into too much detail about the changes in the engines, other than cursory observations -- simply because I'm not too good with those technical details. All I really know is that SCI was object-oriented, as opposed to AGI, and that it went to 320x200 resolution.

3's personally my least favourite of the original 3 games, but can't deny how much of an impressive leap the graphics and music took. That intro music is so good. IIRC, the Buckazoids in the chair are just enough to buy a Happy Meal from Monolith Burger so you can find the Two Guy's message at the start of the game.
@spacequesthistorian
@spacequesthistorian 7 лет назад
Interesting that 3 is your least favorite! It's usually neck-and-neck with 4 when it comes to the die-hards' favorite game in the series. But I'm all for dissenting opinions. :) You can still buy the Monolith Burger meal if you sell the gem to Fester for enough buckazoids (just say 'no' three times). I guess they put the extra buckazoids in the seat if the player didn't know this, and went, "Huh, I usually drop change in my couch. What if ... heeeyy!!"
@GreenMarineGuy
@GreenMarineGuy 7 лет назад
3's my favourite from a technical stand point of course, I envy how nice the graphics were being an art guy, and the music is so good. I just kind of like the narrative from 1 and 2 a bit better and how it's sort of one big story in two halves, 3 is kind of it's own self contained story that I wasn't that into. (The ending in particular felt kind of eh) The lava death on Ortega honestly scared the everloving Jesus out of me too, and I hate that they reused it in the acid death in Space Quest VGA remake. I'm really enjoying this series but I'll be scrolling down on those parts. XD
@spacequesthistorian
@spacequesthistorian 7 лет назад
Yeah, the lava/acid death is really the most horrific one of them all. I teased in this episode, around the "spurt spurt" death in the freighter, that we would be getting to the most horrific death later, and that is the one I meant. :)
@GreenMarineGuy
@GreenMarineGuy 7 лет назад
Knew that was the one you were talking about, almost every other death was sort of slapstick in a way, but that one is more terrifying than most modern gore. I think Mark Crowe just sat down the day he made that death, looked at Scott and said "Y'know what? I'm gonna scar some people today."
@spacequesthistorian
@spacequesthistorian 7 лет назад
Well, there's the "sudden decompression sucks" death if you fuck up the Mallard taking-off sequence where Roger's guts are splayed all over the cockpit seat. I forgot to show that one -- it will be in the wrap-up video at the end of the series. :)
@MagusMarquillin
@MagusMarquillin 7 лет назад
I had to go back and play my game to be sure, but I have MT-32 emulation with Munt under DOSBOX, and it plays these digitized sound effects fine. In fact most of them sound better then they do here, and there's a lovely hum to the powered Mallard that seems to be missing from the Sound Blaster. They only thing I sadly don't have access to is Roger's 3 first words. I set this up years ago, so I don't remember if there was a fan patch made for this or what, but it's worth another look.
@spacequesthistorian
@spacequesthistorian 7 лет назад
I think what you may be hearing is not the digitized effects, but the MT-32 doing sound effects via its synthesizer. Some of the digital effects, like punching a button on the Mallard's computer, is actually just a digital sample of the MT-32 making a bleep noise.
@MagusMarquillin
@MagusMarquillin 7 лет назад
That may well be - when I pause the game it has the same sort of slow fade out that the music does. My only point is you`re not denied the sound effects on the Roland (as I thought you were saying), and those sounds have more body to them - so I`m not sure how you come out ahead doing it this way. Unless you just want to show off a different set up for the historical points, which is cool cause I did not know that. I think at the time I first played SQ3, we still had PC speakers, and was just in awe of the Sound Blaster when we got one with King`s Quest 5 - I had no idea about Rolands or Amegas or how much better it could get. Now that we`re blessed with MUNT, it`s a great excuse for replaying these classics with new ears!

The Robot we say was on treads though, so gravity makes sense for their needs.
