Escape to the Country : Gloucestershire [16: 39] - Habits Of Local Communities!
Alistair Appleton welcomes returning expats to the Gloucestershire countryside where they hope to retire with a generous £700k budget for a rural home.
He arrives in perfect time for the springtime hatch of rare breed ducklings protected by a conservation effort at Slimbridge Wetland Centre.

I think people in the comment section are forgetting that this couple stated their budget was $500k-$700k, NOT $700k. When people give such large ranges, that means they want money left over in their pockets-- especially to factor in decorating, renovating, and moving expenses. If those expenses totalled more than 5k, then that means THEY CANNOT pay the top end of their budget! And considering that this couple moved from another country and therefore will probably have to repurchase ALL of their furniture, their expenses WILL be MORE than 5k.

I always think that these couples choose huge houses on the basis of family visiting and Christmas get togethers without thinking about how much time it takes to keep clean. But the answer to your question and mine is money, hired help and modifications. I have looked after couples like this as they age, often just one partner is left in the large home and that person doesn't want to go into an old age home so chair lifts are put in or modifications to the ground floor space to accommodate a bedroom and bathroom. With outside help for bathing, cleaning and sometimes cooking plus plenty of attention from their adult children old age in such a home is often possible. But these two are about 20 plus years away from that so why not let them enjoy the house as it is in the meantime.
@sandragruhle6288
@sandragruhle6288 2 года назад
@@sallypenhalli My thought was that Brits stay in their homes many decades longer than Americans do, therefore they weren’t thinking long term. I know of perfectly healthy adults who encountered mobility issues in their 50’s that meant stairs were no longer an option. Being healthy doesn’t guarantee that the underlying structure of the body will remain viable.
@runningfromabear8354

I wouldn't move into a house all on one floor earlier than I need to. You'll age yourself prematurely from the lack of stairs. My grandparents on both sides had homes with stairs. My grandfather died in his 80's of kidney failure but didn't need to move into room downstairs until his last months of life. His wife/my grandmother is in her 90's and still physically fit and going for walks. My other grandfather died in his 90's, heart failure. Still climbed stairs to the day he died. My other Nan is in her 80's and still strong. I wouldn't buy a house without stairs unless me or a family member were in a wheelchair or had mobility issues. You'll just get bungalow legs doing that too early.
@martinfpavey
@martinfpavey Год назад
Most of my family members easily made it to their 80s and many 90s, none of them had trouble with stairs. It's just about how you look after yourself.

Irene Hay I was so very shocked at the end when they said they could not agree on the price. I really wondered how much they were off in the end? And why did the couple not just pay the asking price if indeed it was within the budget they themselves set ? I have a feeling many people go into the show and give a budget that really is out of their reach and would be a financial burden in the end, hoping that the show will miraculously find them their dream house way under budget. I don't blame the owners of the home for sticking to their guns-this home is in great shape, has all those bedrooms and is in a highly desirable location. I am sure they sold it for asking price.

Love watching this show and looking at the houses. The only thing I can't understand or like at all, is why the doors were built so low that you always have to watch your head. I cannot deal with that. Australia has normal size doors six feet, so even the tall don't have to worry of ducking all the time
@tamaracarter1836
@tamaracarter1836 2 года назад
It’s because they are “historic”. For example the 1st and 3rd property shown were over 500 years old, and therefore were built with lower ceilings and doors (keeps heat in + cheaper to build). Australia doesn’t have buildings any older than the 19th century and therefore will not experience this.
