BJJ Half-Guard Pin Escape Using the Pinch Headlock: with top pressure from a heavier partner, the bottom of half-guard can be a crushing place to be. As with many pins in jiu-jitsu, your small adjustments through off-balancing can lead the way to space for movement and chances to attack.
In Part 3, we look at what happens when you're able to score the underhook following some off-balancing, but your partner continues to pressure forward keeping their head low. In cases like these, it makes sense to look to a combination of upper-body control and lower-body kazushi - this time in the form of the sumi gaeshi sweep. We gain control through the use of the "pinch headlock", a specialized grip related to the shoulder crunch.

Hi Brian! I absolutely love your content, and personally I would like to see your opinion on straight ankle locks, especially in gi : how to prevent oponnent from escaping it, what to do when he gets rid of the outside foot, or how to finish the submission when he grabs my collar, to prevent my back from getting straight. That's my struggle for quite a long time now, and I still cant come up with a good answer..

Nice topic - execution of straight achilles gives plenty of people trouble. We’ll cover some of this soon

do you ever see the shoulder crunch arm lock working with the pinch headlock, or is the grip not the correct angle to finish the armlock?

@witte2702 3 года назад
i generally favour sumi gaeshi towards the side of the shoulder crunch - does going towards the non-shoulder crunch side give your opponent more potential to post (with the non trapped arm) to prevent the sweep? If there is potential to post, is there differences to account for which side you sweep towards?
@bzglick
@bzglick 3 года назад
Yes with shoulder crunch usually this is true. Pinch headlock mechanics are different - pressure in the shoulder and direct control of the head is strong enough to sweep either way. The arm is free to post but insufficient to stop the sweep.

Hey Brian - is the knee lever sweep viable when I get the pinch headlock from bottom half guard? Like instead of transitioning out of the half guard (and potentially losing my grip/pinch headlock) - just go for the knee lever sweep right away? Wondering your thoughts on this. thanks.

If available can you clamp his other shoulder?

What is the equivalent of the pinch headlock with the gi? Also, I like the detail of off-balancing with the same technique as the previous video, but here in the opposite direction. And..."process-driven Jiu Jitsu".
@bzglick
@bzglick 3 года назад
Thank you. Pinch headlock works with the gi in the same manner - a good transferrable skill to have :)

Bit random but there's a small part in this where you underhook with the tightwaist (then eventually go high). Do you have any tips for not getting Darced when doing this? I see you blocking the far arm, maybe that's part of the answer. Thanks and great content!
@bzglick
@bzglick 2 года назад
Yes - blocking the far hand helps. I try to avoid the waist grip if my head is deep inside for just this reason. If you need to use the tightwaist keep the transtion to the shoulder quick :)

Why does your right hand grab your left wrist, instead of vice versa?
@bzglick
@bzglick 3 года назад
Top hand supports the bottom wrist as a wedge against the shoulder 👍

I see it done both ways. Watch bodini's pinch headlock series. I love these techniques. You can sweep in both directions.
@RogerRabbit123

What about your opponents left hand? Can't he just use this hand as a post to prevent the sweep?
@bzglick
@bzglick Год назад
No - that extended arm isn’t sufficient to prevent the sweep 👍🏼
