A song about a ship my great uncle was on, USS Fogg DE-57. This "little" destroyer escort survived a u-boat's torpedo which tore the stern of the ship off. Despite losing half the ship damage control managed to save her bow and she was towed to safety through a storm. Fogg survived the war and served into the 60s.
Lyrics:
From shipyards of destiny, launched into the fight,
U.S.S. Fogg set sail, through the darkest night.
A guardian of convoys, in the Atlantic's cold,
Defender of the seas, her story to be told.
Torpedoes in the water, the enemy in sight,
In the depths of peril, they stood ready to fight.
U.S.S. Fogg, brave and bold,
In the heart of battle, her legend unfolds.
Through storm and fire, she held the line,
A destroyer escort, a beacon that shines.
Escorting the convoys, through the perilous seas,
From the wolves of the deep, to the threat of the breeze.
November '44, the torpedo's deadly strike,
With courage undaunted, they prepared to fight.
In the face of danger, her crew stood strong,
Their resolve unbroken, they pressed on.
U.S.S. Fogg, brave and bold,
In the heart of battle, her legend unfolds.
Through storm and fire, she held the line,
A destroyer escort, a beacon that shines.
The damage control, with skill and might,
Saved their ship from the enemy's bite.
Half the ship torn away, yet she did not yield,
U.S.S. Fogg survived, her fate was sealed.
U.S.S. Fogg, brave and bold,
In the heart of battle, her legend unfolds.
Through storm and fire, she held the line,
A destroyer escort, a beacon that shines.
In the waters of history, her tale remains,
U.S.S. Fogg, through struggles and pains.
A symbol of bravery, forever she'll be,
A guardian of freedom, across the endless sea.
