Good review. I've had the f1 fir years and use it for field dressing ducks, rabbits etc. and it's always performed well. I've often wondered about the Esee as bush crafters in UK use them a lot, I'm happy with my choice.

I really prefer the enclosed handles on the F1, just from a personal comfort point of view

Thanks for a good review. Love my F1 but just bought an Esee 3 for my son as I found one going cheapish on eBay. Ive been too scared to get too punishing on my F1 as I am not too confident about sharpening the convex grind.

Its a tough choice but I think I'd go with the F1. On my Schrade SCHF14 I did a similar sheath mod, but instead of the cord like you had I took a dremmel tool to the belt loop and cut it down so that it wouldn't stick out the bottom wearing in horizontal on my left side.

I own an Esee 3 and a S1. The S1 is just a little bit bigger than the F1. I like both knifes, but it turned out, that I take the Esee 3 more often with me for 1 day outdoor activities. The S1 is more often in with me, when I go on longer trips, maybe because it's bigger.

Can you PLEASE review the esee 3 in s35vn and maybe compare it the the esee 3 in 1095 or to some other knives. . It’s an updated knife and I’ve seen no reviews by reviewers I really trust like you or DBK .

Hello, I would like to ask your advice, I want to take a compact knife, robust and reliable to use in nature, are torn between the Lionsteel M4 stainless steel M390 or Esee 3 Carbon Steel 1095, you advise me which of the two? Thanks Michele

I have the S1 and the F1. Found an ESSE 3 on sale and I like it. For the purpose of a companion blade, the F1 is always taken in a pack-day pack, back pack, mountain bike pack. I find the Zytel sheath functional and it keeps the whole outfit very light.

Just a word of advice. I intentionally bought a fake f1 from a Chinese web site to compare to my authentic f1 from an authorized dealer. Virtually indistinguishable even when sitting next to each other. Boxes are identical. The only difference was the metal insert for the lanyard hole on the fake was loose and the fake did not show the lamination line on the blade. Get one from an authorized dealer.

I think the Falkniven would get my vote just slightly over the Esee 3. I always have a Mora of some kind to serve me in this role as a companion knife. lightweight, tough and the scandi edge is better than FFG for woodwork but obviously your knives are stronger survival blades. Theres a Mora coming out with full tang 14c28n but looks a little pricey which kinda defeats the purpose of owning Moras.
@AaronIsaak47
@AaronIsaak47 8 лет назад
+KillerDeegan. Nope. Only the classic wooden handle variety but I cannot find a broken clipper or bushcraft model online, there are reports of the blade snapping from over flexing. Im sure it would fail before the Falkniven would but they are sure strong enough for light batoning. Keep in mind Scandi edges will roll and chip easily with mild abuse.

And the reason why all as he knows are 1095 is if you forget your fire kit or whatever you can find a really hard rock and headed on the back your knife and it will send Sparks off of it because it's high carbon so that's the reason why they have such a weak Steel there's actually a reason
@justincase4382
@justincase4382 5 лет назад
I don’t think that’s the actual reason I mean that could be an after thought reason. I believe that’s when rubbing sticks comes into play. Maybe though I will look into the hitting rock onto knife for sparks sounds like it could be really useful
@AusTactical
@AusTactical 8 лет назад
I've got both, the esee usually rides with me out bush because its been to hell and back, id be happy trusting my life to it in a hardcore situation that said the thin handle can hurt if your using alot of pressure to cut, but i like the feel of the falky more due to the wide handle but find i sort if skips in wood ( user error ) the sheaths on both come from different areas falky is more of an arctic design being a little loose so it doesn't freeze but is nice and narrow, the esee sheath system is awesome and can be carried infinite ways, both of these combined with a scandi edge would be amazing
@tigerou812
@tigerou812 8 лет назад
If I had the money it would be the F1. Not big on choils and I like enclosed handles. Just think it's a sexier knife :) . But if someone gave me either of them I wouldn't complain I would be happy either way. But I am happy with my Strongarm and my Moras.
@CedricAda
@CedricAda 8 лет назад
Nothing wrong with those knives at all, Craig! I would take the strongarm over most other knives in that size limit, without a doubt!
@tigerou812
@tigerou812 8 лет назад
+KillerDeegan To be honest I don't use a knife all that much hahaha. But I like the Strongarm and my Mora 106 or 120 it's the shorter blade one. These cover all my needs when I do need a knife. :)
@AaronIsaak47
@AaronIsaak47 8 лет назад
Really Im suprised you guys like the Strongarm that much? The design specs are pretty average, 420hc steel etc. It looks like a cheaper version of their LMF which is now one of the only models still produced in the U.S. Ive never used one but Ive always found Gerber to be totally inferior to just about everything else on the market. I would never vouch for it after hearing reports of people getting injured by broken knives and parangs flying out of their handles. All that Bear Grylls stuff is just totally subpar crap mass produced with poor quality steel, sold in blister packs. Maybe Im totally missing something, im sure the strongarm must be a decent knife if you guys all vouch for it that much but over an Esee or Falkniven? To me its like comparing a Toyota hilux to a Great Wall.
@AaronIsaak47
@AaronIsaak47 8 лет назад
+KillerDeegan Yeah okay, I didnt realise they were U.S. made, gideons tactical raves about it. Looks like it holds up well as a survival blade by all accounts. It wouldnt replace my BK4 as a survival blade though because these days, anything bigger than a Mora needs to cut, baton and chop well for me to bother carrying it and a 5 inch blade is a little short.

I prefer the Esse 3 for EDC and conceal carry for defensive use. If I am going into the brush I will take something else. I like how the Esse has a thin handle which makes conceal carry more comfortable and less noticeable to others. You did a good review.

@CedricAda

not so far at all. I would be more inclined to think slab screws would fail first.. but both are 20 year scenarios I would say! The F1 is beastly in its robustness, I promise!

+CedricAda Gear and Outdoors With all do respect, the esee performed better in almost all the tasks, and the esee is pretty budget friendly compared to the fallkniven. I would take the esee over it, and unless I'm wrong the fallkniven doesn't come with the sheath???

+joseph melchor well here in the us its cheaper
@CedricAda
@CedricAda 8 лет назад
+joseph melchor fallkniven comes with the shown zytel sheath. Yeah we pay a lot more for Esee here versus european knives like the F1. If the Esee was like... 120, It would kill the F1, but for the same price? I reckon the F1 is a more flexible knife. Just.
@josephmelchor7661
@josephmelchor7661 8 лет назад
+CedricAda Gear and Outdoors the esee 3 in the states ranges from 98 dollars to 130, depending on the colors really. And ok, I'll probably get around to trying out both of these. And your opinion has value just as anyone elses, have a good day and take care from your viewer all the way in Texas. lol

Interesting thoughts there. I own the ESEE 3 and the F1Pro., I don't know if the Pro makes a huge difference but there is no way the ESEE even comes close to what the F1 Pro can do with wood tasks. I use primarily Callistemon and Melaleuca (yes same species for those in the know) and the ESEE 3 needs a fair bit of work to get through it. The F1 Pro breezes through it. I will say the same for all the ESEE knives. The S1 Pro, A1 Pro and the F1 Pro don't need me to wear my forearms out the same way the ESEE knives do when working on projects.

@@Tsl4Lf I use the F1 the most because I don't do a lot of chopping or batoning so I guess I would say the F1. I love the A1 it feels so good using it especially removing a lot of wood and whilst it is heavy, it doesn't feel it. Do you have a favourite?

@ce4130
@ce4130 8 лет назад
Hard choice. That lanyard hole position on the Fallkniven shits me severely. Is there any design logic at all behind that? The ESEE warranty means nothing to me, there are no warranty replacements after the apocalypse. I would have a lot of faith in Fallkniven 1/4 inch laminated steel, but wouldn't have much faith in the handle material. Having said that I prefer the covered tang for vibration dampening and see the handle outer being easily replaceable with cord wrap in a worst case scenario. While I prefer the easy care of SS, I would strip and force a patina on the ESEE blade so that it slides through potatoes with some rust resistance. I like the potential for high carbon steel to throw sparks when stuck with hard rock and I really, really like the utility of a hard, sharp edged spine for scraping. But, I prefer the flat pommel of the Fallkniven to the ESEE spike, although I would prefer a flat slab welded on at the base of the Falkniven handle and hardened.
@ce4130
@ce4130 8 лет назад
I'd make a knife with a blade just like the Fallkniven, but with the addition of a rod of hardened 1095 with 1/4 inch square cross section laid down along the spine - if this is possible.
@CedricAda
@CedricAda 8 лет назад
+ce4130 would that be for flint and steel purposes?
@CedricAda
@CedricAda 8 лет назад
and re that lanyard hole? No, no idea if they mean it to be in a weird spot for a reason! It doesnt really need one but it does ensure I'll never try one either!
@ce4130
@ce4130 8 лет назад
+CedricAda Gear and Outdoors. Yep, glad you could decipher my comment, it's hard trying to compress roaming thoughts into a tiny character limit using a tiny keypad. I just like the idea of flint/steel capability in a knife which could find itself pushed into service as a survival knife, as astronomically unlikely as that is, it is the fantasy, and if for nothing but academic exercise I'm sticking with it! Also, you mentioned the spine of Fallkniven was quite soft, so I picture this high carbon spine being hardened for scraping. Perhaps to maintain lateral ductility and resilience across blade as a whole the softer laminate could be formed in a H or upside down U section with the carbon steel keyed into the top of the H or stuck on top of the upside down U. I don't know if possible to forge these materials together in such an arrangement. It might be easier to incorporate some high carbon steel into a pommel that bolts onto the tang inside the handle... still leaves soft spine issue.
@ce4130
@ce4130 8 лет назад
+ce4130 Actually, maybe a thin layer of high carbon steel could wrap over the spine. I really don't know what I am talking about!

@johnzane3977 7 лет назад
LCO213 the only difference in the 1095 from esee vs 1095 from Ontario is the heat treat. my understanding is that Rowen industries who produce esee knives has the best 1095 heat treat in the business. I can't say from experience though because I only own esee knives besides a rat 1 folder. seems to me you can't go wrong with either.

Esee are great knives but they are overhyped. You basically pay for or subsidize people who are careless. I am pretty sure the Fallkniven is a pricier knife in North America...and it should be, its a better knife. For that size especially, the stainless and just the technology of the F1 is far superior to the 3 then theres the superior convex geometry. For its size class the F1 is tough to beat. Wow, in Canada they are also similar in price...crazy. No way would I spend $175 on either.

F1 all day. I have an F1 and an esee 4. Love the F1, hate the esee. The choil is an utter waste of blade. The handles are too thin and blocky. 1095 is a cheap steal and shouldn't cost that much. I also hate coatings and striped it and convexed the blade. I think esee are sooo overrated.
