Also want to add while we use Rugged Radios for a lot of our classes, those particular radios are not built well enough for hard SAR use. Water ruins them. For most of our operations we use Motorola radios. Until Rugged comes up with a better search and rescue radio, we cannot rely on them for search and rescue operations.

Just as a side note, the pill bottle with flagging tape was not an idea from one of our team members as Shane mentioned. This idea came from a NC MSAR class I was part of. One of the students showed it to the class and we all thought it was a great idea, thus I stole the idea from him. Just want to make sure our team is not taking credit for something that we didn't come up with.

For two years, I have been using this kitbag on a trek. In France, few of us have adopted this system. It is, however, very convenient. I put all the equipment there that could allow me to manage in the event of loss of my backpack. Thank you for sharing.

I have recently switched to Hill People Gear, It just fits my use and needs. I have the kit bag, butt pack and a couple backpacks. A couple books I would recommend considering the mention of bear protection would be "Attacked by beasts of prey and other deadly creatures" and "Man Eaters". Both books contain true stories of Animals vs Humans from survivors and eye witnesses. Another favorite is "The Traditional Bowyers Bible" This series has loads of information on much more than just making archery equipment. Natural materials, tools, adhesives etc. Good all around outdoor information on old "tech".

Great vid guys. Couldn't think of anything you had in your load out to criticize, well done! I just this week discovered Hill People and I've identified one of those Kit bags I need and will buy. I am a CCL holder and will have to really think of what weapon I carry in one of these bags. My favorite pistol to carry while hiking/hunting, etc. is now a Walther WMP in 22 WMR, not exactly bear capable so may need to rethink when I get my kit bag. Going to incorporate some of the things you guys mentioned into my kit and engineer some additional pouches I can change out depending on what I'm doing. Thanks for the real-life view of what to carry. By the way, I have an ESEE 3 fixed blade knife I think would fit in the bottom of the kit bag.

I bought the Recon Full Chest Kit because of your video. It addressed a couple of issues that I had riding dual sport bikes and hiking. I’m trying to adapt the smaller binocular case to carry my Nikon and lens. I have to carry them separately right now it I’ll try the larger bino case next. Great stuff fellas. Love this series and the SAR applications. Actually first learned of ESEE when I got me HPG SAR chest pack. Have 4 of your bigger knives, but find a Mora Black with Molle sheaf to be well suited for outside bottom of chest pack. Find 5.11 radio pouch attached to diagonal webbing to work well for my radios, but also a Garmin 64 carries nicely in it As for books, I’m old school. Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills and any of Auerbach’s medical books

once you get it you will likely OVER PACK it like I did...strip it down to the basics and it's comfy and very easy to use...over load it and it can become too much...

Patrick and Shane, Got a suggestion for your firearm carry inside your chest kit bag that 1) safely secures firearm in pouch and still gives rapid deployment. 2). Covers trigger 3) is cheap and easy to make. You will need 11” of 2” wide Velcro hook and loops. Glue or sew the hook strip and the loop strip back- to-back. Now wrap strap around trigger area, attach the end to itself making a loop, and stick this loop to the strip of Velcro running down the middle of the firearm compartment. Unzip the bag, draw the handgun from the “holster” you just made, leaving the holster behind. You can adjust this to custom fit whatever gun you carry that day. Been running this in my Bulldog bag for years. Books: Bushcraft, Mors Kochanski, and US Army Survival Manual.

I started finally using my audible account after paying for it for a year. This week I listened to Gary Paulsons entire Brian Series, left of boom, extreme ownership, and Clint Emerson’s 100 deadly skills books and his memoir. Each of them were entertaining in their own right and with at least a handful of useful tidbits to keep me in a mindset of preparedness.

Thanks for some new ideas and confirmation of what I've been doing. I've been an ESEE and HPG fan for years so I'm digging these videos. I work in an office and can't EDC my KB. One advantage of that 58 pouch I've found is being able to move it from my KB to the backpack I take to work (HPG Connor V1). Mine is setup as a personal survival kit with fire, tools, light, and nav stuff. As for books - How To Stay Alive In The Woods is great. For fun, I like the Four Horsemen series of military sci-fi books from Chris Kennedy Publishing.

I am a Boy Scout Scoutmaster and I have been using the HPG Heavy Recon Bag for years. I love the ability to have gear readily accessible! I can an ESEE 3 on the bag and an ESEE AVISPA inside. As a note - i notice that HPG's website was hit with ransomware and they had to take it down. I wish them well in their recovery. I have many of their packs and love them all! Books I recommend "Into the Rubble" by Doug Dietrichson. He is a a Fairfax County Task Force One Paramedic who conducted SAR in Haiti in 2010. Great personal account. And if you are going on a long deployment or backcountry trip, I recommend the alternate reality series called the "Wheel of Time" series by Robert Jordan. Easier read than Tolkien but I read it through my deployment in 2004-2005 to Iraq and it kept me entertained.

The obvious one would be "Bushcraft" by Mors Kochanski. Amazing book, and that man knew stuff that I can't even begin to understand about the bush. Also, you guys should do an "inexpensive, but amazing" gear vid. Like the stuff that isn't super expensive or handmade that yall like to carry with you. Just a thought.

"Back to basics" is a book that I've always referenced. It has all the homesteading type skills you'd need to survive and thrive in a world without electricity and all the niceties we're reliant on.

1 book that had a huge influence on me was "My Side of the Mountain" Jean Craighead George . I have been reading it since the 60s. I am 59 and I still love taking that book on solo trips. I lost count on how many times I have read it. Another is " Into the Wild" Jon Krakauer, about the life and death of Christopher McCandless. I plan on doing a video one day comparing and contrasting these 2 books - Fiction versus reality in the outdoors. Lots of times I will take Edgar Rice Burroughs or Tolkien books with me when I am solo.

The first book I had that got me into this going on 30 years ago was a hand me down copy of "Naked Into The Wilderness" Primitive wilderness living and survival skills by John and Geri McPherson. The Nesmuk "Camping and woodcraft" series is also a great resource. Big fan of ESEE and RAT too, they've never let me down. I have a new 6 with the 3D scales coming and im super stoked. A lot of my custom knife designs have their roots in the early RAT and ESEE designs.

The classic "Camping and Woodcraft" is always great. For something slightly different check out "Why not load your own" by Col. Townsend Whelen. I love my Kit Bags also. Dale Fricke makes that Zacchaeus Holster and you can make a custom order for your weapon with the light mounted. I bought one for my Glock 30 with the Olight PL Mini 2 Valkyrie light and it works well, protects the trigger, and prevents the light from being accidentally activated.

Good stuff guys. I've got similar kit in the heavy recon along with additional filtration for H2O, Kevlar and Dyneema cordage, and a radio pouch from SOE. Several of the books mentioned are ones is recommend such as the "Back to Basics" and "A Walk in the Woods". Be safe out there!

Great content! I recommend "How to shit in the woods' and 'Lord of the flies' for a good read. ESEE and Kifaru owner here, did my rounds as a volunteer medic, urban setting. Haven't pulled the plug on any hillpeople gear yet I have adapted some kifaru gear to my own taste and as a front carry! I say always have a sharpie and an ESEE4, thanks for the vid.

Cool to see your loadout thought process. I like my OKB, but fit under load is an issue for me. The OKB definitely holds the heat. I wear mind a little loose, which loads that weight on the back of my neck, and over a few hours, it really starts to wear you down. ESEE Knives are the best, happy with all my ESEE gear. Outdoor books? I'd have to go with my first one, besides my Scout handbooks; it was The Complete Walker by Colin Fletcher. Book had lots of solid advice for the beginning backpacker. Other favorites when I was young were The Ultimate Challenge: The Hardest Way up the Highest Mountain in the World, by Christian Bonington, and The Hiking Climbing Handbook, by Curtis Casewit. All helped foster my love of the outdoors as a youth in the city.

I recently read the book " One Second After" it is not a bush crafting book, but about surviving the world after an EMP goes off. Great book really enjoyed it.

Just took delivery of my first ESEE knife, the Izula II in Desert Tan, very happy! "Arctic Manual" by Vilhjalmur Stefansson is a great military survival book which is sadly out of print. I'm a big fan of Spaghetti Westerns and a good book about them is "10,000 Ways To Die" by Alex Cox. Great video fellas, thank you.

A few books i might recommend would be, nick Offerman's "paddle your own canoe" it's a great read, a bit of philosophy and comedy with anecdotes. David gutterson's turn around time, a walking poem to the Pacific northwest. Clanlands by Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish. Really enjoy the content of the channel, guy's. Also, side note... i love my esee6 and am looking forward to my esee5! I only wish i could fund both in the coated and non coated blades.

I have had one of their heavy recon bag for years. After seeing this, I'll probably start using it more often. As far as books go, I love the classics: US Army Survival Manual, and The Hobbit. Reading The Hobbit when I was young initiated my interest in hiking, camping, and fighting orcs.

Hello everyone! I’m sure it sounds cliche, but I’m still reading Bushcraft 101 by David Canterberry, as well as the most recent military survival “manual” I could find online. I absolutely adore Esee products, frequently carry an Esee 6, and an Esee 4 with the molle setup when performing bushcraft activities or camping, the confidence I feel carrying Esee makes me choose to carry them more often than not!

On the topic of TQs. the CAT is great and so is the RAT. Keep in mind though that the CAT can not get full occlusion of the artery of animals and children. Pack for the mission and know what possible patients you will be dealing with. I usually keep one of each because I am usually out with my 8 and 13 YOA boys. My Medkit is very streamlined and I use my overall equipment as part of my medical kit. I understand that some people like to have a fully packed stand-alone kit and that is good. With good training and experience, I have been able to reduce my Medkit to very simple items. For training, I have heard of a company that puts on a Wilderness First Responder course. Heard great things about it.

As far as books go that are packable, I like the Creek Stewart line of pocket books. In case you’re injured a novice could use these while you recover. Book topics include knots, shelter, fire making , etc. A good general edc book is the MyMedic “First Aid & Survival: The Stay Alive Guide.” It’s broken down by topic with color coded pages, very small and can fit in bag or pocket. Plus when you buy the guide, it has a scan code on the back to download a free digital copy!

Great stuff as usual. Really liking the discussion on how these emergency/quick access bags are used as well as the extra photos at the end. I felt real shame when Shane was talking about not being /that guy/ with the head lamp. :) For books I'm going to recommend almost anything by John McPhee. If you're not familiar, he is a non-fiction writer of very eclectic and interesting topics. His writing style is very appealing as these topics, in others hands, would be too heavy to really find compelling. I've not disliked anything I've read of his but a good start would be: "Oranges" (literally the history of the cultivation and farming of oranges in the US), "Coming into the Country" (his travels through Alaska), "Basin and Range" (the geography and geology of the Basin and Range area of the US), and finally "Uncommon Carriers" (stories of people who drive, captain, pilot, or otherwise transport freight across the country). Loved the video, I've been thinking more and more lately about picking one of these up. As for books, recently I suggested to someone the Air Force's SERE Operations textbook (AF Handbook 10-644), it's a lot beefier than the FM 21-76 we all know and love and I wouldn't suggest trying to throw in in your pack (think textbook sized for reference here) but it's full of a lot of information for someone in any climate looking for new projects to try out outdoors or new skills to work on. I also recently re-read Daniel Quinn's Ishmael for the first time since my teen years and highly suggest it to anyone who wants to dive a little deeper into their relationship with nature (which I think would probably be a lot of people watching this video!). Lastly, I'm about to start The Lessons Of History (Will and Ariel Durant) and while I can't give an independent opinion of it just yet, I had heard it described as having "the single best word-to-wisdom ratio" of any book ever written, so I've got pretty high hopes for it! Excited to see what everyone else is reading and to see which gear item you guys decide to tackle next! -V

Waiting to get The Meateater guide to wilderness skills and survival (Dec 1) by Steven Rinella, but also like the Dave Canterbury series. Would like to get a pocket size of the SAS survival handbook. I have an ESEE laser strike and really like it. Also really enjoyed the Parent/child class at Randall's Adventure Training. My boy and I had a great time even in the rain. Howdy from Texas.

I'm looking at these bags for Storm Damage Assessments...sometimes I walk in remote areas looking for powerline damage, and I'm by myself. My driver stays in the vehicle. I also like to carry the Silky pocket boy. It's very small and easy to pack and has some serious cutting ability. Books, the Pocket Ref by Thomas J. Glover. It has a great first aid section along with a ton of other very useful and handy information. Zen Flesh Zen Bones because sometimes I just want to smash and smashing is not good, or so I have been told, something like that.
