In this video my wife and I are using a survival kit I built utilizing the ESEE Escape & Evasion Wallet Kit as a baseline. I reviewed the original kit a while back and then I made some changes to it so it would be more like a survival kit and less like the E&E kit. As you'll see, we don't use all the items (though a future video will show the next iteration of the kit with more use of more items), but overall it gave us a few essentials that would have helped us out if we were really lost.

A suggestion for a future video: Have you wife and some other women put together a women specific Bugout/Get home bag. Most bags are put together by men and don't account for female needs. Men tend to be the ones making the bags and need to account for their wives, and daughters when they supply their Family prep. or camping set-up. I know it's a touchy subject.

This is a great video thank you for the inspiration me and my wife will definitely be trying something like this she doesn't get out as much as I do but she does come out with me so this would be something good to practice you know we've talked about it the wood if and things like that while we're hiking and camping but never actually you know put it to the test I mean she knows how to use a a Ferro rod and she knows some things but to actually do this I think would be a great teaching tool that says thank you very much for this and you look like a great team God bless your family

Always good to see ideas tested. If I took my loved ones out hiking in the desert, off marked trails, with any possibility of getting stuck or lost, my real emergency survival kit would be a satellite distress beacon. $300 to save our lives if something goes badly wrong. RU-vid channels always seem to suggest that lost hikers will become magically ‘not lost’ after a night round a fire. In reality you’ll be more tired, dehydrated, weaker, more likely to make mistakes and injure yourself after a cold night of little sleep, feeding a fire. Navigating to safety will then be a matter of luck.

A minor suggestion: water purification tablets often expire after three years, it might be handy to label the year of expiry somewhere in the kit

In the desert as well as anywhere else you should Always wait until the last possible moment to start your fire in order to make what wood you have gathered last as long as possible.. The temperature Always drops its coldest just before sunrise.. Just my two cents.. I live in the heart of the Sonora Desert the wood here burns good but fast however the coals give off heat for hours .. That's the only thing I'd say differently, Tim.. Much Love and Respect 💖

Good video, i usually also carry a painters tarp (outside the wallet) as a overhead protection option, when it rains it pours out here in the desert. And a brightly colored bandana as potential signal, pink or orange (for contrast). I think my kit is a little larger.

Great video, and the wife is not only fine as frog hair, but more importantly she sounds like she has a good head on her shoulders, and a sense of humor. I'd put at least a foot of duct tape in that kit to patch up the water bag when a cactus pokes holes in it, and maybe a pair of SAK tweezers to pull out cactus thorns that you might find yourselves getting into. haha If it was me, I would not pack iodine tablets like that. The iodine escapes and they are worthless in short order. That's why they say once you open the bottle, you really need to use them all up fairly soon or just get a new factory sealed bottle and throw away the old tablets after a few months, but that's in the bottle, in a plastic bag....I bet they don't last a couple months. I packed iodine tablets like that once and it turned everything slightly yellow. Iodine is pretty caustic and will corrode everything including cordage and what once was tough stuff, a two year old could break it, it was so weak. Even white aspirins were a yellow tint. If it were me with this type of last ditch all out emergency kit, I'd swap out iodine tablets for potassium permanganate for extreme emergency water treatment. It's not the best, but it has a forever shelf life and for the same space as those few tablets, you can have enough PP to treat 100 or more gallons of emergency drinking water. Basically you'll starve to death before you run out of drinking water. Again, it's not the best stuff and definitely old school water treatment, but it never goes bad, treats A LOT of water for a small amount of space in a kit, and it's dirt cheap to buy. Um the reflective tape is only on one side so at least a 50 percent chance it will land with the tape side down. If you put the light on the outside of the kit how are you going to squeeze it to look for the kit you lost?

If you're crafty, you can get glow-in-the-dark nail polish, mirror tape, and dog tag at a craft store to make several. If it'd fit, I'd use a business card size tag instead of a dog tag. Bigger reflective surface, and bigger/more light. I put some of the glow paint on the edge of my flashlight/torch lenses so I can find them in the dark. In most fishing departments, you can find little 1/2 inch glow sticks for several hours of battery free (here I am) light. I suggest adding those to your kits.

It's a little larger but I like to use a single wall wide mouth stainless water bottle for my survival kit. Which can he used to boil water. The water bottle is large enough for a water filter and a couple of mylar blankets. I always go way overboard on fire starting materials.

If it's Kevlar cord you are screwed over the long term using it. Kevlar thread deteriorates when it gets wet. My father in law had a gigantic spool of it from his job. He said it works fine when dry but wet is a no-go.

Great video thanks for sharing your thoughts and time...the only recommendati could say would to maybe tare that reflecting tape on your kit in half and put it on both sides of the kit just incase it happens to fall on the side with the tape would render that useless if you couldn't see the reflection? Thanks Tim (and Jenny). Wow... mini survival kits... so many over so many years. First... a video on a survival kit isn't complete unless put to test completely. It's great to know what you would do with the kit, but unless you do it, there isn't resolve. I'm not a fan of a single mini survival kit that can be carried in a single pocket. What would you do without having that "extra" knife? Yes, I have made my own mini kits in the past years, but I didn't focus on one kit. My thought was always... I have more than one pocket... why not more kits? At least (in warmer months), if I have a cargo pocket on my pants, I generally have another. In the colder months, we all have winter coats with many pockets. My old kits were built around the Altoids tins... I had a fire kit, I had a cutting and cordage kit, and I had a shelter kit. Three Altoids tins are not too bad to carry EDC (once we are used to doing it as routine). Still... I stay away from them now. A body carry EDC, a carry EDC bag, and a vehicle carry emergency bag/kit are what make up our emergency system now.

Been watching your video for a while now. You always usually have a good stuff. My videos on this kit or any tiny kits like this would be your a fool. If you’re traveling you should have so much more. I would be telling people that these things are worthless you should be carrying more. I don’t believe anyone would be wandering around with tactical pants on with just his kit.

I understand what you’re saying. But if you noticed at the beginning of the video even Tim had on a backpack that looked pretty full to me. So he even knows you need more. The part about heating up rocks for heat disturbs me a little bit they can blow up if they have moisture in them. I have been in the Adirondack mountains Lost myself. I made it through the night with just the clothes I had on hunting clothes. I just don’t believe that this video would help anyone. You have fishing hooks with no fishing line. Don’t give me wrong I do respect Tim and your response. On the other hand him and his wife certainly had more on them just to do this video.

Just a suggestion, but since your with your wife , woman always carry a bag of some sort so you could've put a mylar blanket in her bag.

The wallet itself takes up too much space...You can can get more stuff in the classic altoid tin, and it bet the tin itself would be lighter and less bulky...

I mean no disrespect . I love Desert Survival Scenarios . I've lived in Arizona and The Sonoran Desert all my life , 56 years . Here in Phoenix we just had a hiker die in 110°F 43°C temps . Two Fire and Rescue dudes had to be carried down Camelback Mountian . No one wants to shoot a video in 90°F 100°F plus heat . Someone needs to . Someone really need to show what happens or a dramatic rendition of it ...but when the people in the video have jackets and beanie caps .....not a whole lot of emergency rescues happing across the U.S. deserts in Winter . Every year both in our Hot Season and the Cold Season , as we say here in Arizona , people ( campers and hikers ) either get in a emergency rescue situation or .....die . People need to stop coming to Arizona in high summer and going hiking without enough water in 100°F plus weather . Please , do your research before you travel to Arizona .

what you want to do if you ever get lost in a forest or in some desert or someplace like that you light everything on fire and then before you know it there will be all these firemen and people coming to put out the fire oh my gosh you're fired so scary we got to put it out cuz it might burn stuff and then you just say hey we're lost out here as long as you're over here putting out this fire you might as well give us a lift and some chicken

Wasted cash unless they gave you that crap free. Next time use an altoid tin and tape a few strikers on the inside lid for matches. Get all that stuff and more in the tin with better space management. You are not going to "survive" with anything like these kits. Nobody that is actually stupid enough to get stuck in the woods would even think of this crap anyway. As for the people that do think of these kits. They are not likely to ever need onefor using ones brain to not get into stupid trouble.
