I learned about Esham in the 90s. Growing up in Jersey, you didn't really get too much exposure to the scenes of the midwest, west, south, etc unless it was more on the mainstream side. We DID, however, have a big ICP following on this side. I listened to ICP as a kid, and they kept mentioning this guy Esham, and then Esham was featured on a bunch of their songs. One day in 1999, I was just hanging out at the mall and I found Mail Dominance and started listening to it in the sample booth (remember those??) I fell in love with the sound. Mail Dominance was my introductory album to Esham and I still listen today. This guy is very underrated. Criminally so. He seems cool as shit. He seems like he has tons of great stories to tell about his career. Must be a blast to have a beer w this guy and sit under the learning tree.

Geeked you finally got Esham on the podcast but i hate you used most of the interview talking about Eminem. No disrespect to you Kid L but asking him to sign to Shady Records was an insult when Esham basically was Master P before Master P! I remember when that K!ll the Fetus album dropped, he was charging $20 for the cassette when the standard price was $10 and the cashier at wherehouse music in northland was trying to convince me not to buy it but I wasn't trying to hear that lol. Everytime he dropped a new album, they would literally have the whole city covered with posters and promo. This the first rapper i know of to drop a double album. The only rapper that had red and gold tapes so they automatically stood out. And if you remember reading the credits, they used to say "Produced,Written,Mixed and Mastered, Arranged, etc by Esham A. Smith" and his brother James was Executive Producer. Man this dude prolly got billions stashed lol

Reel Life! ESHAM was one of my biggest musical inspirations in the game of hip hop. That originality really separated him from the rest, his shit was so controversial and different people just wanted to keep hearing! Acid rap was born and a legend was made... no one was dropping shit like he was back then. He's just on a different level.period. Its true many people don’t understand the game these days, the hustle just aint the same and the passion has faded in the music, no one puts in the effort artists used to back in the early 90's.. I feel struggle is somewhat necessary for a dope MC to emerge. Its just not the same and its difficult to accept at times. Natas is my favorite group, Doubelieveingod? Is the sickest album ever along with E's '94 & '96 release. I can still remember the first time i heard them all. That feeling I got no longer transpires with new music... Someone that plans to do an interview and make videos needs to do thier research and ask uncommon questions to ensure the artist actually wants 2 be there. Keep it interesting and unique. Im the biggest underground and 90's hip hop enthusiast, with that being said i feel this guy barely tried. Dont mean to be rude but do your homework guy. Esham has a bigger story to tell and he would share if you actually asked some clever questions. There is an art form to interviewing. Keep studying or u just shouldn't be doing this. Back in the 80’s every kid in Michigan had Eshams Boomin. He was the first rap hero in the Mitten period. Traverse City was THE Suicidalist capital at that time hands down.

I grew up in Royal Oak, but I definitely shared the struggle of the streets of Detroit. Esham is the 🐐 of Detroit Hip Hop.

I remember when Esham had the studio at the Nile on Jefferson and Van Dyke. When he abandoned it we use to go in there and it was like a museum. Black lights, Old CDs in boxes, posters, it was crazy. I crowned him the hardest working man in show business. 👑

I'm disappointed in this interview. As much as I would like to BLAME the interviewer, I believe that Esham didn't give this talk a fair shot. I've watched it twice, here's what I noticed: 1. Esham seems a little tense in the beginning of the interview, he gave no eye contact with the interviewer. You can hear in his demeanor, and his tone, that he wasn't very thrilled to be at this interview in particular. (This can be validated as the interview goes on). 2. The interviewer starts off with basic factual information about Esham, and let's Esham explain his upbringing and early career. During which, he doesn't give detailed responses to any of the questions by the interviewer. This makes it more clear that there is some type of bitter tension during this interview. 3. Esham randomly begins speaking on, "Culture Appropriation," and "Protecting Hip Hop, and Detroit." From OUTSIDERS. He is clearly speaking to the interviewer. We can confirm this by Esham addressing the interviewers background, and making statements such as, "You're Chaldean, but you're doing interviews in Detroit. That's like me going to Israel and being a part of the Middle Eastern culture." Esham CLEARLY has a distaste for the interviewer. He also throws shots at Eminem during this statement. 4. The Interviewer offers Esham the opportunity to END THE PODCAST permanently if Esham wishes. Esham back pedals and steers towards Eminem. 5. The interviewer seems to see this Eminem discussion as "False Bait" and moves on to talk about Esham and his career more. 6. As the conversation continues, the Interviewer makes a miss-step and changes the timeline of the conversation to Esham's current project, "Purgatory." 7. The timeline of the conversation gets thrown off, which is most likely do to the tension and disturbance from the "Culture Vulture" Conversation. 8. The interviewer brings up the Eminem situation, in which Esham keeps stating, "You would have to ask Eminem what the problem is." 9. The interviewer has enough information to state that Esham should know what the problem is, but Esham instead plays around with the topic, until Esham realizes the interviewer is well-informed about the beef. 10. They exit the Eminem conversation, in which Esham and the Interviewer have now both built tension between each other, and Esham leaves. I think that Esham had preconceived notions about this interviewer, which made him reluctant to speak in depth about any matter, I also think the interviewer could have done a better job navigating the conversation when it came to the Eminem situation. This could have been a great interview because clearly these are 2 intelligent men that just couldn't find common ground. I will be releasing a video next week on my main page to get further into detail.

My Guy, Esham!!! ✊🏾💯

As a native Detroiter born and raised on the Westside that meet Esham ( I'm 6 months younger than E at 50 yrs old) back in 1987ish and is a True Day 1er, if you didn't grow up in Detroit or know about how there wasn't a rap scene in Detroit back then but mostly Flint and Saginaw and experienced how Esham was BLACKLISTED by Urban Detroit radio stations how they record stires kept his tapes and CD's hidden or behind the counter but was pretty much the catalyst for a few white rappers (ICP, Twizied, Kid Rock to a certain extent and most definitely Eminem who bit Esham's style) that got more respect and love from Detroit than E did then you don't understand the struggle and how Esham never got his props until way later on in his career. And I've noticed it's newer fans, probably anyone under 30 yrs old think they know what's up doe are the worst ones of an Esham fans. Esham has a reason to be in feelings.

Mail Dominance is still one of my favorites. Rapping over the happy days theme song was fucking epic. The samples on that album were just krazee

You got this guy bringing up the shit with D12 from a LONG time ago and trying to get Esham to feel bad or admit to being wrong for his lyrics. Then at the end low key asking E "how does it feel to have fell off nowadays?" The other day ICP was on No Jumper and the one dude Wack something or other brings up Tech N9ne to ICP and they tell him how they've known Tech for over 20 years, but the guy keep interrupting them and trying fill them in on who Tech is, as if he's introducing them to who Tech is for the first time.
