We've gone full circle. They removed softcaps on crit and other things in 2016 when they released Tamriel Unlimited and now they're essentially putting it back. 5 years later and they still can't decide. You can take a break from ESO for a year and you'll miss 3 groundbreaking balance patches.

It's almost like back then there were as many paths available for consistently bumping up Crit damage so they uncapped it to make building for it more meaningful, then as a side-effect of their ongoing and always-stated goal of allowing multiple build paths, stacking critical damage became widespread due to how many new sources of it were added, so now they have to reign in back in. Except now we actually have other options, and ZOS doesn't have to scale every new Hardmode with the assumption that the top teams will be doing 3x damage at all times.

Thanks for the vid Nef! My first thought is that it will impede progression groups the most who are struggling with some bosses even though they might understand the mechanics (not everyone has it easy and are doing vKA speed runs). My second thought is RIP Elemental Catalyst. Optimizing it's output was already cumbersome so now it's simpler to get an overall bonus elsewhere. My third thought is if the goal was to minimize power creep, why didn't they change the base bonus to 25% instead of adding a cap?

Third: Because they didn't want a nerf across the board, they wanted to nerf the top. If you pug a dungeon (good chances of no or low uptime on Warhorn and Brittle, and no Catalyst), you won't be reaching the cap at all, or only rarely go over it. So for the large majority of players and content, this won't change much. It only radically affects organised trial teams.

@@varana I'm personally quite happy about them introducing the cap without changing anything else (apart from a few buffs providing crit damage bonuses being changed to offer something else), in most games nerfs to reign in top players hurt the regular players far more than the cream of the crop, but with this change your average Joe is entirely unaffacted.

Isn't catalyst 5% per element? Was it nerfed on the pts? edit: oh it's taking uptime into account Also, I suppose in some classes (like templar) the khajit damage percentage isn't as bad since you can use the aoe, st, direct and dot cp Also also, something intresting that isn't important to pve but in pvp due to the base crit resistence of 20% the effective crit cap there is 145% (and higher depending on enemy cp/sets/impenetrable/transmytation)

So, when looking at your advanced stats, is the cap on bonus crit damage shown at 125% or 75% (because the base 50% crit damage isn't shown there)?

I can understand why they think they need to do this but there are fare too many changes recently (not a complain about changes in general!). I cant play every day several hours and still try to get my numbers for my prog groups. But it really feels like that I need to spend way too many hours in farming and building new setups than doing actual content... Please just add hard content or another trial difficulty if you think the game needs to be fixed. But if they are pushing too hard with next patch (playing Magcro-Khajiit here), I am out. It feels impossible to be up to date when having a full time job :/

ok... i was thinking... pls correct me if i'm wrong. Crit damage is now cap at 125%. min/maj force gives 30%. khajiit and fighting finesse gives another 20% since i'm a templar (and NB in my second main dps) i have another 10% thats now 110% crit damage total. to hit the cap, i need only 15, which wont be a problem since in general there is minor brittle (10%) or elemental catalyst (15%) or both debuffs on group. and even if missing both, i can just get backstaber CP (15%)... I have 70% crit chance, and get to 80% when kilt is fully stacked. So.. ok, I can get to 80% crit chance with it, fine, but then wouldn't it be better if i use Prior Thierric or any other dps Monster Helm instead? Prior would add a huge damage in my build. I mean... I always HATED Kilt, and only use it cuz he is basically a must have. But now half of its power was "cuted of".

NefasQS, you did not mention the bonus crit damage when hitting from stealth from behind. This was quite a fun way to one-shot regular solo mobs in PvE (instead of using Blade of Woe), and in update 31, magicka users finally got equality with stam users in being able to do this, albeit with ranged weapons getting a much lower bonus than melee attacks. This is gone now in U32 - my magblade can stun and damage NPC mobs from stealth with veiled strike, but not kill them immediately. I don't do much PvP, but I imagine this change will also strongly affect solo gankers in IC, greatly reducing their ability to "farm" solo enemy players.

I think debuffs should apply to lowered cap so it doesn't reduce usefulness of certain gear.

It's a silly simple mistake that everyone makes when they think about combining sets. You did not necessarily say that you could combine them but you've done what most of us have already done and combined the effect in theory crafting before realizing they were incompatible

He was showing what happens when you equip the band to the sheets formulas. Everyone that's used mythics as part of their build knows this. And not once did he say anything about wearing both kilt and the band together. >.>

"Critical Chance continues to remain the best stat in the game by a large margin in PvE..." yeah, duh. I still can't wrap my head around these developer's decisions. Critical is and always will be a way to multiply damage, damage will always be king in ESO because of how the game works. You have to kill things to progress, and not having enough damage is a slog, which is why you don't see as many healers and ESPECIALLY don't see as many tanks in the game. You really have to sacrifice so much damage to be a tank in this game it's ridiculous, grinding PvE solo content with a tank or healer character is awful, and let's be real, the majority of this game is spent playing solo. Most of the quests and storyline content and dailies and blah blah blah, it's just solo content. It's boring to main a character that kills all your momentum in solo play. But yet they continue to nerf crit chance, crit damage, damage in general, over and over and over again like it's such a problem to the game. I likely have well over 3000 hours on this game from combined console and PC play and at this point I'm just tired of waking up every other month to smell the nerfs.

They could just snip mob HP then to bridge the gap. If they're going to reduce damage numbers, then make enemies do more damage but also take less damage to die so at least there's an incentive for tanky builds to exist in solo content. Overland mobs should actually pose some sort of threat.

@@sunnyd9321 I agree with that somewhat. But it's difficult to fine tune enemies that use tab targeting and don't care about their environment (shooting through walls etc). I think they should be more challenging and do more damage but it should be done with a lot of scrutiny.

Proc sets can crit now. There were already "competitive" builds that use proc damage before the crit damage nerf. Salene monster set critting for 125% now? Plenty of options to look at. I personally like the changes.

This is a good way of thinking, nerf crit damage = buffs in other areas. I'm not sure where we may see this but....I'm happy the crit is capped. It kinda ruined lots of builds since crit is everything

Because that’s your critical damage it can be buffed by force but won’t show it still can go up to ♾ but next patch 125

You can NOT average a 20% crit damage (80% uptime) to 16% because of the cap. You could do this before but not now. Every point over the cap is lost. E.g: if you play like before and time colossos + warhorn its less effective than alternating it.

Regarding the discussion about khajiits, sounds like the perfect race for a stamina dragonknight in a min max situation. Then you make up for not having the class critical damage modifier while at the same time getting the bonus to your flat Damage Done

For PVP the crit resist max is around 123% (IIRC) which is possibly another reason why they went with 125% as the cap.

All I'm willing to personally take from this video is that I'm going to drop CA and Trap from my khajiit characters and replacing it with an ability that doesn't annoy the hell out of me, and I am very glad for that. Also this offers the opportunity to retire Tzogvin as Bow/Bow and instead allow a group buff set like Kinra or one of the others, which is also great. Personally I appreciate the attempt they're doing to bring back more variety instead of just encouraging stacking crit damage at any cost.

All these unnecessary changes that nobody is even complaining about. Notice how every update is them just tightening the shackles around our feet. If this was a PVE issue they could have EASILY given all PvE enemies a value of crit resistance similar to how they have resistances already....

Thereby forcing everyone at the top end to continue to invest in exclusively Crit damage while punishing everyone else. And tighten the shackles? The "crit damage or you're wrong" shackles around my feet are feeling pretty loose now that I'm allowed to have some diversity and focus on other things.

i was a quite vocal proponent of 150% cap on the Forums when all these changes came to PTS. you're saying "150% is not much of a nerf of the power creep, is it?", but you're wrong there (IMHO). ATM you can go way above 200% with your critical damage in an optimized group. so dropping down to 150% is AT LEAST 50% decrease in potency. majority of the time even more. 125% cap is detrimental to a lot of players. my main character is a Khajiit stamina Templar. so i am one of those poor souls that will have to be extremely careful after the next patch, because with the gear i am currently using i am sitting at 118% WITHOUT slotting Backstabber or Fighting Finesse. so if my group brings a Catalyst Necromancer, Brittle Warden, DK tank or a healer using the Warhorn i am going to be so far above the cap it's not even funny. so instead of improving my gear setup with new shiny sets that may come into the game in the future i will have to dumb it down, so to speak, in order to not go above the cap. and let me tell you there are a lot of Khajiit stamina Templars or NBs out there. 150% would still be a helluva nefr and yet it would give a lot of players a room to breathe, so to speak. i have no idea why did they take away the critical chance from medium armour and gave us critical damage. as if stamina players aren't being punished enough already by everyone wanting magicka players in Trials. with the cap being 125% we're going to be even more obsolete. they should rename the game Elder Staves Online..

IF you follow the meta. but if you don't have access to "the best of the best of the best, sir!" gear out there you can use something that isn't meta. what is the most infuriating is the fact that with this cap everyone who isn't a Khajiit will be able to wear the very same gear that i do ATM without going over the cap. a Khajiit won't. just because Khajiits have the 12% critical damage passive built in their racials. that's what i have an issue with. not meta, trial gear, damage reduction, power creep, none of that matters. what matters to me is that i as a Khajiit will be forced to use certain gear (Malacath in this case) whilst everyone else can wear whatever they want. my apologies if i sound rude, that's not my intention, but the 125% cap is rubbish. it puts one race and two classes at a serious disadvantage. you see, if i'm in a trial where there's a Catalyst Necromancer i am immediately over the cap (without even slotting Backstabber or Fighting Finesse). other races are still fine. and i'm not even talking about Brittle Warden or a healer using Warhorn. i can just leave the raid at that point. or use Malacath, which is worse than the Kilt. everyone else can use it (the Kilt), i can't. i'm stuck with Malacath..

@@mzprx76 so if I understand you your problem is with basically only khajiit. It isn't the first time class meta has changed. I have probably race changed all my dps multiple times. Do I agree with having to use crowns to get to meta? Not necessarily, but at the same time it isn't anything new in this game. I think in general this makes things a lot more interesting than previous. You can always also look at other sets that can be run in thinks like light armor for the penetration and such.

I agree. I dont mind if crit has the best chance for top damage. But it should be capped and it should be a chance not always garunteed if you want to build a little different.

@@monalisa-bs4zs its a honeymoon phase, I like the game and have put a lot of hours in rn but people arent leaving established MMOs for it lol, 3 skills per weapon with long cool downs and LA/HA spam and mobs that do nothing isn't drawing in any endgame PvE players from other MMOs. Its more of a social game with some cool crafting and okish PvP wont be a good MMO for PvE for a long time if ever

@@BadKarma.- pve loops in eso get boring as well. There’s only so many times players go round the gear grind circle before they a. Want trifecta’s, get them then go play something else b. Don’t want trifecta’s and go play something else. Only time will tell what new world becomes but if players are getting dopamine from simple shit like chopping wood then it’s a good sign for the game, everyone knows what they’ll get from eso.

every update a new nerf, a new must to change gear/skills/CP-settings and no performance update, I have broadband internet, can watch and stream 4K stuff without problems, any other game even from korean providers run without problems. These "game.changing" updates are really gamekilling updates for longtime players, getting so tired about this. I play to have fun, not to get stressed with every update. You hear new update coming, with massive changes and you think Sh*t not again...

you don’t really have to change your gear though, unless you’re specifically somehow building over the 125% max for crit. i know full well i’m not.

At 20 mins in you have kilt and band equipped which isn’t doable due to the one mythic limit.

He was showing what happens when you equip the band to the sheets formulas. Everyone that's used mythics as part of their build knows this. And not once did he say anything about wearing both kilt and the band together. >.>

They shouldve just nerfed crit chance to like 60-65%. Khajiit stays relevant and they nerf damage, which is their overall goal. Nerfing crit damage doesnt change over all damage much

They already tried nerfing crit chance and due to how powerful crit damage is everyone simply put on as much crit as possible from every source they could find. Unless you're saying to put a cap on crit chance itself, which while interesting it would simply lead to the same situation in a different form.

Yes, I was talking about capping crit chance. No more wearing medusa and mothers sorrow. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the next step they take. Hybridization of sets is just increasing the power creep. More major nerfs are sure to come.

@@carlos424 ?? The amount of power creep from hybridization is minimal when you take into account the volume of build variety it opens up. Imo, damage isn't the problem. The problem is that fights simply have not been kept up to date and the "uselessness" of tanks/healers is due to mechanical and numerical failures rather than the power of our damage output. After trying out ff14 I can honestly say the rate at which noticeable incoming damage on players occurs is a joke. Especially in more casual content.

I like the chances, it was super annoying to see everything just being crit stacking. Doesn't leave much build choice since relative to other builds it was way stronger. Now you off meta build have a better chance now at not being laughed at or one having to explain their self on why going off meta, and how it's decent. Hahaha

Big time. Mechanical is getting a nerf too. My magblade was up to 138 (up to 158 if I had grim focus and a kilt) percent without any teammates. With a 100 percent crit rate for 5 seconds and a guaranteed stun as part of my rotation, I was pretty fucking broken, even though my crit rate was like 20 percent without mechanical). So now crit damage gets capped at 13 percent less than I was at AND my crit rate of 100 percent (for a short while) gets nerfed as well. Even tanks in impen had issues because I could get like 20k pen and 8k spell dmg whike mechanical was up because balorgs. Gankblade getting hit hard

@@joeyanunti yeah a lot went after this post, but like i see, nightblade wont be affected, max cap on crit damage wont affect pvp, unless you are in controlled group, crit rating wont matter, because there wont be any source to get it though, btw, first hit from sneak is guaranteed crit, so its ok :D did you test how much your NB has max crit damage not in group ? Mine has 119.

@@medwarztis My solo crit damage was well above cap. 138 percent. And it's only the first hit out of stealth at guaranteed crit. I had a whole combo of guaranteed crit so yeah that's a BIG nerf. I had heavy attack, lotus, concealed, tether and 1-2 syphons all hitting guaranteed crit at 2.38 times my tooltip (which was massive considering I had 7-8k spell dmg). I was hitting 24k unblocked tethers on DKs fully buffed at 28k res. I won't have that crit combo anymore, and all my hits are capped at 2.25x instead of 2.38x. absolutely effects solo blades

all they are trying to do is give new compositions and options to group/raids, they don't want everyone to run the same shit, but so many changes could give fatigue to players I agree on that.

New CP system great, just needs some tinkering esp craft, everything else mostly perfect, only ones rlly crying n upset are the meta losers who can’t do the stupid shit they used to with the new system. Then lie n cry about but if I wanna heal I have to use up my slots for this and can’t dps and the other 1000 points I have for traits not needed to slot don’t matter, wah wah wah wah wah. So happy to see meta getting DEMOLISHED! Game going in the direction it was meant to be from the start, finally. Only took 7 years

Keeping it real this is the best combat team decision ever...now hopefully they go though with it... ATTACK DOUBLE DIPPING. HONESTLY double dipping is so bad in the gameplay.. a example is armor Light armor gives reduce run cost. Med armor gives reduce run cost and increase run speed. Smh this is the equivalent of 1 armor set giving both crit chance and crit done... Movement is king in pvp...yet a werewolf gets 30% movement speed but 0 hit to movement cost.... werewolf gets 10k armor but 0% cost increase to dodge. Compare to the well balance vampire... werewolf is a joke. Double dipping doesn't end in bonus passive. ..it always in stacking defense...with little to no counter play.. stacking defense MECHANIC can lead to almost immortal builds... because crit damage plus weapon/spell damage buffs defense/offense...

@@mrklutzy6191 yeah this crit Nerf severely effects my khajit magblade in PvP. I was so far above cap it was ridiculous. I'll have to probably drop minor force or shadow to get back down to cap. I'll have to figure out what gives me the best tradeoffs. I def gotta rework it
