Lots of trained songwriters can do that. It's not like she learned how to do it last weekend. She's been studying her craft for 30 years and has paid close attention to what she does. This is what a trained musician/songwriter should be able to do. Just because she came up with it in her head just means she has the gift of songwriting, but being able to direct others verbally while playing isn't that uncommon.
My god what a phenomenal talent! Esperanza is not only pulling this music out of her head she is also conducting the band who is realizing her musical vision in REAL TIME! My goose bumps have baby goose bumps.
Agreed! I was so scared that I would not get a copy that night! I tried over and over until, finally, SUCCESS! And I still listen regularly. It was such a profound artistic work! This Searching the ground for pennies has me crying everytime...like I have never heard it before. It speaks to my soul! She is a true artist.

i get sad every time something reminds me of Exposure. i remember having way too much schoolwork to catch more than a single glimpse of the livestream. sounded like an epic moment never to be repeated
The sad thing is that the album itself isn't really available to everyone.... Only 7777 copies? Cool idea on paper but it somewhat ironically limits the exposure this music will get in the long run as many couldn't tune in to the livestream. Music is something I want to be able to listen to over and over again and many of her fans are never really going to hear these songs.
Allurminate there may be some things on RU-vid but not all of it. And this isn't really about her struggling to be known because she's independent, because if that were the case she would have made it available to everyone. That and the fact that she's not actually independent because she's signed to a label. She could have easily released 7777 copies of the special vinyl edition and then made it also available on Spotify like the rest of her music. It would still be special. Instead, she has ensured that most of the world will never even get the chance to hear these songs; even this video isn't the finished product.
@@voodude1074 She designed the project that way very much on purpose, to kind of highlight the ephemeral quality of music that doesn't exist much anymore. Everything now is uploaded to the internet, and thus lives forever. She said at the outset she wanted to capture whatever she could write in 77 hours and have the process available to everyone live as it was happening. After that, once the 7,777 discs were printed and sold, the experience would only remain with the lucky few who were able to catch it (preorder) in the moment, like the magic of a live concert. A sort of once in a lifetime 'you had to be there' thing.
This is orgasmically beautiful. I keep coming back to it. Glasper looks close to tears as I am I every time I hear it. I prefer this to the finished version. Amazing talent on display throughout the band. Esperanza - what can I say - words fail me. Lalah getting in to it is something to behold also. It just takes my breath away.
Thanks for confirming that is Glasper on piano! I really enjoy his music but wasn’t quite sure that was him. I saw Esperanza Spaulding in Central Park Summer concert series well over 10 years ago now and let me tell you, with every note she played and sang, everyone there just knew they were hearing the voice of the Devine through her. A giant in the industry even as her bass towers over her. ❤😂
Ms Spalding sweeps the whole band up in this complicated re-arrangement of what is obviously a very personal, thematic journey, wrapped up in a musical extravaganza. And, she pulls it off, changes and all ! Wonderful stuff !
I have watched this video for the past 3 nights and I am moved each time. Tonight it made me so thankful to God for my hearing. Absolutely beautiful melodies ❤
So I watched this one during the live stream and idk how many times I've seen it since, but the most powerful moment for me is still those few seconds of silence once the song ends. It's like everybody acknowledging that that just happened lol....So powerful I can even feel it through the internet....every time man.

After coming off the 7 year anniversary re-airing, i had to come here to get some more. Esperanza is sooo special and this Exposure experience now witnessing it twice is amazing
Lol that was dope how she was singing then all of a sudden, you heard a melodized “major,” then “melody,” and then “this is where we go to the chorus.” Haha I never seen someone do that before. Fire.
This sound like something that should be in a Disney Pixar movie. It almost sound like it should have been in the movie "Soul" when he had his audition. I love this music.
I am lost for words on this beautiful piece of music; Robert/Esperanza make this look so easy knowing this music composition is a complicated piece of work; if I had one wish, my wish would be to play instruments as good as everyone in the room and to join this elite group of musicians, this distinguished group of musicians!
I don't know what this was...........I don't know if it were a sound check........or if they were determining how the song would be arranged..............but THIS video brings a tear to my eye. I like this better than the final recording and I LOVE the final recording. Brava!

I don’t think they were using the phrase “lives rent free in my head” back when this was recorded, but it most certainly lived there for me and 6 years later I’ve come back…
I would like to feel what it's like for her, when she does this. Hear the music the way she hears it, see the shape of things before they exist, and know just how to flex possibilities to get there. I can see in her face there's so much more than I know, and its compelling.

if i havent said this, im so glad you uploaded the clips so i can watch them guilt free. this was incredible and the look on esperazan's face at the end. was all of us on the live stream when each song was completed. Listened to this yet again, my favorite on this album. But can we talk about that this wasn't even the best part of THIS song. The BEST FUCKIN PART was when she was working on this on her own AT MIDNIGHT and she started BEEEELLLLLLTING that chorus at MIDNIGHT!! Dudes. I died because I've never seen anything like that. This was done like the next day when everyone was there.
