College football and to a lesser extent basketball are the minor leagues for their professional leagues. The media rights deals and the big conferences exist to keep those programs profitable. Realignment is a foreseeable consequence of NIL and certain college sports becoming more and more like a farm system for the NFL and NBA.

This is a completely idiotic take. I don’t know if Bilas is this ignorant, or whether he has an agenda abut which he is not being honest. Where does the money go? It goes to supporting ALL THE OTHER SPORTS at the successful schools. It supports the Olympic sports and the non-revenue sports, including the women’s sports teams. You want it to go pro and pay the athletes? I’m ok with that. BUT THEN REPEAL Title IX, and be prepared to not have many Olympic sports teams. Have Jay Bilas, Genius, explain how THAT is going to work!

Does the men's pickleball team really need to practice in a $15 million training facility? If I can buy a star college basketball player for $2 million/ year, do I really need to pay the head coach $8 million/ year to recruit him? D2 and D3 schools are still rolling out 15 to 20 sports programs; it's just that they don't have the most exorbitant travel or pay their coaches or have top notch facilities. And if Big 10 schools say they don't want to support women's volleyball either their alumni will scream and it'll get reinstated, or the programs will fold and the money and athletes will go elsewhere.

So are all universities essentially private now? Is that what Bilas is saying? What is a public university exactly? Will the death of public universities be again the death of equity and inclusion in college admissions? It seems to all be connected. Football is not separate from the university as it stands, it is woven into the university to a degree that the presidents are heavily involved in securing more money from the football program.

Look it"s real simple, just ask the Universities to open up The Athletic Dept books. Gross income vs expenses, and don" forget the income from men"s Football and Basketball. Pay for all Women"s sports, and i mean all of it. Travel, scholarships. Coaches, and men"s non revenue sports. Rowing, tennis, volleyball etc. I"am not saying Jay is wrong, but i would love to see the real numbers and expenses.

Public funds should never pay for the expansion of college athletic departments. That includes the tuition from the students attending the university. College athletics should not be an organized business. It is the antithesis of education which is supposed to be the point of college. No college sports should be for profit. It invites greed and corruption.

99% of all players get "ZERO" NIL money, my friends. ...And that scholarship is worth about .0001% of the billions of dollars they generate for the universities. Those players will work 40+ years after college and their lifetime earnings will never come close to what the coaches, athletic directors, and presidents will put into their bank accounts in "one" year. That's the exploitation reality and truth that people don't want to hear.
@Noland55

There are scholarships in the Ivy League. The top players pretty much get a full ride through a composite of funding. That's number one. Number two the concept of "Amateurism" is a modern day construct, put forward in the late 19th century during the rebirth of the Olympic movement as a way to keep working class people out of participation. Only the upper class could afford to participate under those rules. I prefer an honest rubric. If you're paying to watch someone play for the benefit of an entity earning a profit, there's a element of professionalism involved that cannot be denied.

When was the last time headlines about "anti-trust" cases screamed in the media? . The Department of Justice isn't after colleges, it's too busy persecuting Republicans. And which Congressman is going to stand up and demand that their state universities shell out employment contracts to athletes? Educators in every state and the National Teachers' Association have one lobbying issue: more pay for teachers without any relationship to their performance in the classroom. This Bilas guy can bark at the cat in the tree and growl, but nothing is going to happen.
@garyross4602
@garyross4602 10 месяцев назад
I am assuming what you wrote isn't a mistype or autocorrection. That said, contrary to you partisan delusion, the DoJ isn't 'persecuting' anyone, it's 'prosecuting' criminals. It just so happens that, currently, vast majority just happen to constitute large swathes of the Republican party plus one Republican ex-president and his acolytes. As for your remarks about paying athletes, you do realise it's the TV Companies that are shelling out the Billions of dollars that's paying for all of this, not the Universities, they are creaming off huge amounts and spreading the rest around to a perfumed few; Coaching staff in particular, but not the very people who actually do thew work, the athletes. How about the TV Companies put all of the players under direct contract to themselves, and then making decisions about who plays where and when and cut out the middle man, namely the Universities. Then the Universities would have sweet FA to say and/or do with it! Wouldn't that rock the boat and cause a stir. major collegiate sports [and a few minor ones as well] have been corrupt and rotten to the core for decades, this is simply a few chickens coming home to roost.
@franksanty3971
@franksanty3971 10 месяцев назад
Interesting perspective. But it clearly destroys the Student/Athlete concept. Schools need to decide if they wish to preserve education vs minor league FB. I think ND was trying to do it with supporting Stanford and Cal to the ACC. Jay is right.. it’s the American way. But greed and power will eventually destroy. It’s all about money. The changes have little to do with the player. College FB as we know it will no longer exist. Let the schools negotiate Ks. Pay the players for their entertaining the Student body. But remove them from the classroom. Most at certain schools don’t attend anyway. Don’t put schools like ND, Duke, NW, Stanford, Cal.. to mention a few.. at a disadvantage. The concept of the Student/Athlete is done. Pay the Athlete to play and entertain. Pay the Student to go to Class and learn. They are two separate entities. Ultimately the individual should simply decide which entity they wish to join. If you don’t do it that way, we should K with every individual who is attending a college… Athlete or Student. Sad. But yes it’s the American Way. We would sell our Country to China if the price was right. Oh right.. we are already doing that…..
