I grew up with horses so I know how special they can be to people. When I was a freshman @ UK, we piled in the car and went to Calumet Farm to see him. Randomly. But I we surely all knew how special he was and that he might not be with us much longer. Unspoken of course. We walked up to the fence, he was distant. But he saw us and took off running in a dead sprint (40mph) right for us, still powerful as ever. Put on his brakes near the fence. Stood there like he knew how special he was. He let us all love on him, he was so sweet. I wish I'd have taken photos. I'll never forget that moment. He was put down due to laminitus about a year later. Few got to see him in his element like I did. He may have been even more spectacular there than he was on the track. We all got together, that day, & wept. I miss him.

I watched Secretariat win the Triple Crown with my Mom…we laughed and cheered and cried. She’s been gone 39 years now, but I’ll always remember that day.
The people at Belmont put a pole 31 lengths from the finish and painted it in blue-and-white checkers. A nice tribute to the greatest racehorse of them all.

What a magnificent creature brought to us by God….I’m lucky enough to have lived through his races and see that remarkable horse run for his life!!!! My Dad was home that day from work… we witnessed it together with Mother cooking. ❤️❤️❤️

I worked at a drugstore and got out in time to go to an appliance store next door. They had a tv going and I and several other customers stood watching and that’s where I saw a miracle happen in 🏇 horse racing. I don’t think we’ll ever see a horse like him ever again.

THE GOAT. I was a senior in high school, growing up in KY. I’ll never forget him, and I still get choked up every time I watch him run. And I never get tired of watching his races.
He was special! In looking back it seems almost otherworldly what he was capable of. Broke records on the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and of course, the Belmont. That being the greatest athletic achievement I've ever witnessed. If you're lucky, you witness that kind of talent once every century.
If I could go back in time and witness just one sporting event in all of history I would go back to Belmont Park on June 9, 1973, to watch Secretariat put on the greatest single performance in thoroughbred racing history.
+9Ballr I was there and remember it well even now. I remember the Sham fans cheering loudly when he led into the clubhouse turn. I also remember Turcotte looking into the infield as he neared the 1/8th pole. He knew that he had a chance at the world's record and he "rode him out" continuing to keep an eye at the clock all the way to the wire. Meanwhile the crowd was going totally wild.
I would want to go to all three! There is nothing like watching him come from behind and pass the others like they are standing still, but the anxiety he instills when he breaks for the front in the Belmont is exasperating!
I was a little girl at the time, who had a dad who loved horse racing. I remember him cheering so loudly for this horse, yelling at the TV, every race he ran. My dad loved this horse. Bet on him to win every chance he got. I miss my dad, he passed away in 2016.

I was 10 years old when Secretariat won the Triple Crown and my dad, like yours, was crazy about Secretariat! Lol. He bought a retired race horse that year - he was a red chestnut, and yes, his name was Red. My dads been gone since 2008. When the Movie came out in 2010, all those beautiful memories came in like a flood❤️.

And come to find out Fliteline is the Great, great, great grandson of Secretariat. Before I knew this a few days ago, I watched Fliteline on the back stretch of the Santa Anita race, I believe. First time I was suddenly sitting upright watching and commented to my family watch that he just took off just like Secretariat. I watched two more times and yup,that back stretch take off was amazing. Then to find out he is related, WOW.!!!
My grandparents lived on land owned by the man responsible for reconditioning the starting gates. I remember one set of gates that had been brought in for repairs and all these men were crowded around it. I asked my grandpa what was going on and he pointed at one of the stalls and said it was the Belmont gate and that particular stall was where Secretariat was. I won't ever forget that.

I do get how you come up with 4 quarters of 1.5 miles is 3/8 mile for each "quarter" but I don't know how you get the times for those "quarters". The Belmont 1/4 mile times were :23-3/5, :22-3/5, :23-3/5, :24-2/5, :24-4/5, :25 flat), Secretariat did run each 1/4 mile of the Derby faster than each previous (25-1/5, 24, 23-4/5, 23-2/5, 23). He also beat his own time for the Derby (1:59-2/5) at the 1.25 mile mark during the Belmont which was 1:59 flat.
So well said Secretariat run at the 1973 Belmont has to be the most beautiful thing ever seen in sports because of the domination. Like Chick Anderson said on the call a tremendous machine. What a Athlete! What a Horse!

As Secretariat was coming down the homestretch in the Belmont… Blowing the field away by 31 lengths, I cried… I was 11 years old. I knew even then that this was a performance that would never be duplicated… So far, I’ve been right. That was 45 years ago.
One more comment. An average horse has a heart weighing around 4 lbs. Race horses may have a heart weighing 6 lbs. Secretariats heart weighed 9 lbs. A big, big engine!!
Everyone is yammering (in the vid) about people crying at the race, hell, it's 2022, and just watching this video gets me all teared up. Horses are magnificent animals. And a horse that makes the rest of them look just pedestrian is just amazing. That was phenomenal. I wish I had seen him live.
I did not get to see him in person but I did get to see live on TV all three triple crown races he won. I was 12 years old, crazy about horses and taking riding lessons. I did realize history was being made and Secretariat was a phenomenal horse, but I don't think I realized he was so phenomenal that his records would still hold 50 years later.
FYI speaking of emotion, I remember jumping and screaming as he pulled away so many lengths in the Belmont. It was just so him. (Ok I have to admit I am generally a sports nut anyway and tend to scream for competition.) Ah, Secretartiat. What a horse.
One comment in this documentary that has always stayed with me is the story of Secretariat watching an airplane. I think this helps to show how different he was from other horses, and how conscious of the world around him. Secretariat's win in the Belmont was so amazing, and not least because Ronnie Turcot just let him run as fast as he wanted, and he was running for pure joy.

ESPN had him ranked as the 13th greatest athlete of the 20th Century. His feat in the Belmont ranks as one of the greatest performances of any athlete, yes athlete, ever. He is in the same conversation with Muhammed Ali, Babe Ruth,and Michael Jordan as the greatest of all time.

There was an interview with Ron Turcotte where he said of the Belmont Stakes that Secretariat was running so smoothly that he had no idea how fast he was going until he turned around and saw how far ahead of everyone else he was. He then glanced at the timer and his jaw dropped. It's September 2021 and his record of 2:24 flat still stands.

If you want to accuse a horse of juicing, look at Prove Out. He was off the board in more than half of his career races, and yet ran the second-fastest 12F of all time. He never came close to that level of performance before or after that one race. Just sayin'.
My Grandmother was at the Belmont that day. She was a teenager, pregnant, and scared. She thought about suicide a lot. She prayed for any sign to show it would get better. She got to see Big Red up close that morning. She seriously asked him "what would he do" In that brief moment she felt connected to the horse that was about to shock the world. It was like he knew and felt her pain. She never thought about suicide again and she became the strongest woman I have ever known. She still swears Big Red saved her life that day. From every video and picture I have seen of him he knew exactly what was going on. It was like he was toying till the title was on the line. Like any great athlete he turned it on when it mattered the most.
I similarly, watched Secretariat run the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on that beautiful day of 19- May -1973. My uncle took me and I've loved going to the track ever since. ☘

Please, someone remaster and upgrade the resolution of Secretariat's performances. One of the greatest feats in athletic history deserves to be seen in sharp clarity and color. I can't think of any athletic record in sports more difficult to match than winning the Triple Crown while breaking the race record time for all three races. It probably will never happen.

The only words that could have been coupled with a moment in history as amazing & triumphant as Secretariat's race - it was his race & for many of us who understand or inexplicably feel such great emotion towards that wonderful horse, it will always be his race. How you view perfection and not be moved to tears? I’ve watched the film of the Belmont more times than I can count and every single time there are many tears flowing.
This horse didn’t run; he glided. For every 1 “gallop” Secretariat took, Sham took 1.5. We have moose visiting our pasture frequently and when you watch them traverse the topography, their stride reminds me of Secretariat; they glide across the land and when they come to our fence, they merely step over it as if it wasn’t even there. Stealth. Amazing.

I just came to know about him 2 days back.. Since last 2 days I am watching only him.. Nothing else.. I mean nothing else.. And every time I see him, I break down in tears. He is truly God thing. He was something one of it's kind. Nothing in this world can match his spirit.. Nothing.. No humen, no other living thing.. No any non living thing.. After watching him I can say he was the most prestigious thing ever created by God.. Without any doubt I can say this.. Am from India.. I wish had to see him live. He is legend.. Remember kid, there's heroes and there's legends(Secretariat). Heroes get remembered but legends(Secretariat) never die, follow your heart kid, and you'll never go wrong.
One of my biggest regrets- in late 70s /early 80s , my dad and I were driving back from Florida . We passed the billboard that said "See the great Secretariat ! Turn here to see Big Red... ! My Dad (who never stopped anywhere) asked "Do you want to stop,,? " I said No..... I still regret that all these years later .....
Secretariat came to us when we needed him the most. We were stuck in the Vietnam war and Nixon Watergate. He was, "More Than Just a Horse." He gave us unseen emotional abilities.
At the Belmont Stakes Secretariat was running against really good competition and Sham was very fast. In fact, Sham could have been competitive against everyone, except Sham had to face the greatest horse of all time.

I was at the Preakness in 73 in the infield when right before the race many of us went right up to the actual rail and got to see this incredible animal go flying by. I thank God I was able to see such perfection in my life. That Belmont still brings tears to my eyes
I was 21 at the time and traveled to all three Triple Crown venues to see Secretariat run. I'm now in my mid 60's and when I'm around others, mostly younger, at Derby, Preakness or Belmont parties and asked who I believed was the best ever I always respond "I lived during the time of Secretariat".

I have watched his races over and over and still tear up every time. I have read everything about him I can get my hands on and have watched everything I can watch regarding Big Red! Having had my own horses at the time, and watching this all on TV, I felt all the things these people talked about, and know they are so right. He looked right at you and you felt him connect to your soul instantly, and you were drawn to him. He had more charisma than any human I ever met, yes, even through TV, which almost makes no sense until you realize he wasn't just a horse. He was from beyond, incarnated, and it was obvious to everyone. All this talk about Secretariat isn't just hyperbole, it was an unprecedented experience that could only be known if you were there at the time.
Secretariat's Belmont Stakes performance is the singular greatest sporting event in my lifetime. People wept in the presence of this horse; he was that special, almost as if touched by the Lord himself. RIP "Big Red".

As a Virginian, I'm proud to say that both Secretariat and Riva Ridge were born and raised at Meadow Farm in Doswell, Virginia @ 20 miles north of my home near Richmond. Have been there many times. There has never been, nor will there ever be, a thoroughbred as great as Big Red.

The beauty is Secretariat knew what he was doing and he knew how to run his race. He had a tremendous burst of speed on the 1st turn at the Preakness, then he runs stride for stride with the speed horse in the Belmont, then blows him away, now the kicker is the horses laying in wait to catch him on the final turn, were NO WHERE IN SIGHT! Unimaginable Performance!
If asked who I thought was the greatest athlete ever to live I would without hesitation respond: Secretariat. I stood up at age 16 as he came down the stretch at Belmont and gasped "Oh My God", it was that obvious.
I've watched this video more times then I can count and read all the comments over and over and it never ceases to amaze me the joy this horse brought to and still brings to the people in the video and those who just love him because of who he was. I just love the call "he's is moving like a tremendous machine" but the best one for me is " Secretariat has opened a 22 length lead, he is going to be the Triple Crown winner". Just an unbelievable athlete, unmatched by no one.
The line that moved me was "He's out there almost a sixteenth of a mile from the rest of the horses!" Mere lengths didn't do justice to the magnitude of Secretariat's win. There's a pole at Belmont 31 lengths from the wire painted in blue-and-white checkers; a nice little tribute to the greatest horse of them all. And Chic was right; that pole is just inside the last sixteenth pole.
I've watched so many videos of my beautiful, magnificent, tremendous machine, the horse with a very apt natural star on his forehead. I absolutely love reading all the comments. We all idolize him. There's nothing wrong with that. We all need a hero. When a horse can inspire a person to want to be better, as I've seen so many commenters say, including myself, it's the highest compliment. Watching him fly is therapy for the soul. Secretariat.
You can write or speak about all the great horses of the world throughout history but none carry the respect or fame of Secretariat he was God's gift to humanity.
My dad now deceased was at The Belmont even though we lived in California. He bought 2 $2.00 bets to win with Secretariat. He kept them and made a poster with them framed that sat in his office for decades. He was an amazing horse. I don’t think any horse has beat his track records since.

I was 16 years old and worked at a riding stables. I also played golf. And worked at the golf course..I can tell you the 19th hole every Saturday that year was insane..but every secretariat day no one was on the course..100 people were in the resteraunt..it was amazing..
I was 28 years old that spring day in 1972, and I had followed the life of this amazing horse for every race he ran.. On the day of The Belmont, at post time, I went outside and grabbed my youngest brother, who was 9 at that time. He said,"Whaddaya want?" I said, "You're gonna watch this race." "Why??" "Because you're gonna see history being made." Ever so often when The Belmont comes up, my young brother would thank me for making him watch this truly historical race and this wonderfully magnificent horse.

I was young when I watched the triple crown won by Secretariat, watched all three races. My late father told me after the Belmont, "Man O War was the country's horse. Seabiscuit was the people's horse. Secretariat was God's horse."

We are blessed to have Secretariat's great grandson and he is just as handome and stylish as his great grandfather too .He had quiet a successful but short career and placed in most of his races but sadly he had to be retired because of repeated nose bleeds . We were so suprised to say the least when we researched his brand and found out who his great grandfather was . These days he is competing in jumping arena with my niece and he is doing very well at it too , we love our big boy and so happy to be able to share our lives with him .
Did a Vet do any checking up on what was causing the Nose Bleeds, such as High Blood Pressure, a Heart Problem, etcetera. Nose Bleeds on a horse has to be quite disturbing to say the very least, and I must honestly say that I have NEVER heard of that happening to a HORSE. You hear about it happening to People, but Not to Horses.
