Accompanied by protests, a two-day AfD party conference begins this Saturday in Essen. Around 600 delegates have been invited to the meeting in the widely cordoned-off Grugahalle in Essen to elect, among other things, a new federal executive board. The leadership duo Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla are seeking re-election. There were no opposing candidates until recently. The failed European election campaign, the handling of top candidate Maximilian Krah and the AfD's course in European and foreign policy will also be discussed.
Counter-demonstrators arrived from all over the country
Across Germany, various groups had mobilized before the meeting under the slogan "Prevent the AfD party conference." The authorities are expecting up to 100,000 demonstrators at various rallies and meetings. The larger protests began on Friday evening with a rave demonstration with several thousand people. The climax is expected on Saturday. Several thousand police officers are deployed in Essen.
Domestic intelligence service keeps an eye on AfD and demonstrators
The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, which classifies the AfD as a suspected right-wing extremist case, is looking to Essen with interest this weekend for two reasons: Firstly, the votes on political changes and the top personnel at the AfD could provide it with insights into how great the influence of the far-right movement in the party is at the moment. Secondly, among the numerous groups that have registered for the counter-demonstrations, some are expected that the domestic secret service classifies as belonging to the left-wing extremist spectrum.
Blockades trained beforehand
There had previously been announcements of blockades to prevent AfD delegates from arriving at the party conference. According to NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU), there were also so-called action training sessions in which this was practiced. However, the police have made it clear that they would not tolerate a blockade and want to ensure that the party conference proceeds without disruption.
