Many essential oils are toxic, photo-toxic, carcinogenic and highly allergenic. Fragrance oils, if you buy good ones, have been created from the start to be safe in their intended use and you can get the entire detailed list of ingredients and all the batteries of tests they are subjected to as well as the safe quantities to use. Some cheap ones have nasty ingredients like phthalates, but most quality fragrance oils are clean and safe and you can find out by looking at the SDS. They are usually safer than essential oils as those can be very dangerous if not used properly. Some essential oils are also bad for the environment as they require vast amounts of raw material to produce a few drops (look at rose oil for example). So it's not a question of natural vs synthetic. There are tons of toxic, even deadly natural compounds, just like there are tons of perfectly safe synthetic ones. You need to select and use them properly, whether natural or not.

Thank you for the comment! We can agree to disagree on this. But please look into "fragrance" and what it entails. This word can be very misleading.

@@HeidiVillegas I know you're referring to the term "fragrance" in ingredients lists, which doesn't tell you anything and leaves the door open to some nasty stuff. I'm talking about selecting fragrance oils for your products. Quality fragrance oils that have been extensively tested and have extremely detailed IFRA reports, Safety Data Sheets, allergin declarations, etc. These tell you everything that's in there, how it can be used, recommended percentages for different applications, the presence of any concerning substance like phthalates, etc. You are not operating blind, you have all the information to make an intelligent decision. I think you are falling for the "natural = good for you" and "synthetic = bad for you" dichotomy. Both are false. And when people assume that essential oils are necessarily safe, because they are "natural" that's when you can get into dangerous situations. In both cases, essential oils and fragrance oils, you need to select carefully and use only as directed. For example, many people assume that if they have two EOs that can be used at say, 5% in a product, then they can go with 5% of each, which is not the case. The combination with a total of 10% can be dangerous. Of course, some essential oils have health benefits, and if those fit into your type of products and their usage, that's great, I'm all for it. But to declare that fragrance oils are bad for you is misinformation. The right fragrance oils can be safer than essential oils, especially in leave-on-skin products or in candle burning.

I picked up some essential oils to diffuse at a small shop and I made sure it said essential oils. The one I bought was eucalyptus and sage and the other was rose petal, ylang ylang and something else but I was still worried that I wasn’t getting a non toxic product. Thanks for this video

I've always been afraid to use fragrance oils in anything that goes on my body. Idk what kind of reaction I will have. Plus, my best friend is allergic to EVERYTHING. So when we make anything, we ONLY use Essential oils. To be completely honest, at first, I didn't use fragrance oils in any bodycare products because I didn't know if we were supposed to or not. I couldn't fund anything that said they were 100% safe. Then I learned from you.. to not to. ❤ I appreciate you. Thank you Heidi. 😊

The saddest thing is that almost all commercial products contain FO's. If you see the words "parfum", "perfume," "fragrance," or anything except "essential oil" it's probably not the best for your body.

@@HeidiVillegas I totally agree. I also stay away from 'essential oil blends'. Because I'm not sure what they exactly mean by 'blends'. 😉 I also do my research on Essential oil companies before I buy. You can just never be too careful.

Are burning oils the same as fragrance oils, can you use burning oil's inside a defuser or humidifier?
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas Год назад
I never use fragrance oils---they have the potential to contain thousands of synthetic toxins, and some of these are hormone disruptors, carcinogens, and other.... It's not a good idea to burn your essential oils, actually, because they evaporate super quickly. But you can use them in wax melts, or just add a few drops to these. For a diffuser or humidifier, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions. Some humidifiers aren't meant for essential oils. Good luck! :-)

Regarding color or dyes for soaps, what do you recommend
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 6 месяцев назад
I love natural herbs and clays: nettle for green, indigo for a bluish gray, alkanet for a lovely pink, calendula for yellow/orange, turmeric for a darker yellow, and then the clays! Brazilian purple is lovely....and so many others.

If I’m making perfume oil and I want it to be strong and project, would I use essential oils or perfume oil to blend with the carrier oil?
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 6 месяцев назад
You can use a number of different things: essential oils, fragrance oils (I don't recommend these), and there are also various other synthetics you can use.

I use essential oils too but they dont last that long. what do you do to make the scent last longer?
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 7 месяцев назад
They tend to last a little longer in an oil base. But it's ok to reapply to small areas (like you would perfume) fairly often to carry the scent. Also, layering the scent is helpful. You can make an essential oil spray and mist on your clothing (do a test first), and even your hair. Because it's not being absorbed by the skin, it helps last, too. Another thing to consider is habituation. This is when your nose gets used to a scent and your brain stops processing it. It's what causes women to overdose on their fragrances and is also the reason big laundry detergent and fabric softener companies have increased the fragrance in their products---dangerous for the consumer, but who cares (tongue in cheek). The scent you're wearing may still be very evident to others. I've had people tell me I smell good, and I honestly have thought my essential oils had worn off.....
