Excellent! This is a lot like the Root Progression Exercise by Alvin Batiste. Thanks for the refresher.

Thanks. Like you have put in your practise workbook. Which I use daily.... And now messing it all up. Asc and Desc using alternating keys, and 7 alternating patterns, full scales..... Yes. Will take me indeed 4 years....... Daily study. And 1 day a week a jazz tune..... 😅

It's good, Nick...and good timing, I think I need another approach to practicing major scales 👍

Thank you Nick. I am always looking for ways to improve my playing. I can see where this will be beneficial. You just have to put in the effort to get the benefits.

The best way to get yourself ready musically is to 'not think but just do' just as you mentioned. It certainly helps just to play without any constraints or expectations and just play without any expectations.

Couldn’t disagree more. If you want to be an amateur songwriter or a very bad jazz player yes. If you want to make music of any respectable standard you observe, learn and work on your art.

I think this is true in a lot of respects but when it comes to technical exercises, I think it's useful to think and do specific things that will benefit your skills as a whole. Remember, the instrument is a vehicle for your ideas and you have to be able to speak through it fluently..

Well Charlie Parker did these very exercises as a warm up, so I guess it s a solid advice. Thanks Nick.

Hi Nick, this is gteat! I‘ve been practicing the major scales for some months now, eventually manage them fluently without thinking so now I am exactly at that point wondering what to do next…. I’ve already started with modifying one single note in the scale to get eg melodic minor etc. Or moving through the modes of major in varying the starting point, eg dorian from the I or lydian from the IV etc…. But your suggestion is really great to become more flexible by changing the order of the keys - just what I needed - can‘t wait to try it out - thank you! 🤩

Hi Nick… I actually do this, but not often, so I am not nimble. The bigger the interval, the slower I think. However, interestingly, this is one of my favorite warm ups for a concert. (I have a classical gig) I do it relatively slow. Sort of combining long tones, then slowly speed it up. Anyway, maybe I need to warm up with this daily? I am a horrible improviser. If all I had to do is run scales, I could be awesome. Haha. But alas, jazz language is still difficult for me to pick up and speak. As a result, I sound like a junior high kid. I hate sucking, but I’m trying to get over it. Enough of my whining. Thanks for the video! I will start playing these exercises more.

Have you ever just played melodies along with the legends of the music? Recordings are a great resource to turn your playing into something more authentic and characteristic of a jazz musician. Who are some of your favorite players??

@@nickmainella yes, I have tried this many times. No success yet. Michael Brecker is my favorite of all time. I also enjoy Branford (pure genius) Chad LB, Patrick Bartley, Bob Berg, Sonny Stitt, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, Hank Mobley, Stan Getz, (can’t forget him) etc. I could go on. (Just reading my Spotify playlists) When I want to learn a tune, I listen first and try to learn the head by ear before I look at any music. No success yet. And ironically, do I learn the tune super well? No, of course not. You know this. It needs to come from inside. I have music inside of me, but it’s lost right now.

Ive worked on something like this except I did it in terms of a pattern. For example I would take a pattern like 1 2 3 5 and play it in all keys, in all the different intervals, and play it up, down and down,up.
@nickmainella
@nickmainella Год назад
Ya same idea! I'm just using the full scale :)

And then minors, right? And then alternating between minors and majors (ii-V)? (Perhaps?)

Any and all of that sounds great to me! The only limit is your imagination :)
