Sorry I haven't even finished the vid bfore asking but is there a general rule about when you pluck or finger the string in relation to various drums? Like with the kick do you find you need to conceptulize yourself ahead of it or behind it etc? Or no real general rules like that? I find that timing for me on bass depends greatly on getting into a 'flow state' which can be done by playing for long periods uninterrupted or distracted. But doing that in a live setting or with a band can be harder I'm sure.

Frater Tenc The general guideline is to pluck the string on the kick and mute on the snare. Of course that is just a guide, I like to think of it as plucking on the “lower” notes of the drum and muting on the “higher” notes. The goal is to make it sound almost like the bass is coming from the drums. That’s what helps connect the guitar melodies to the drums and make the band sound like one unit. Different styles call for different minuscule variants, though. Playing ever so slightly ahead of the drums gives a sort of faster, driving feeling, while playing slightly behind the drums gives the song a groovier feeling.

Frater Tenc Also I don’t mean to make it sound like you pluck with EVERY kick and mute on every snare, it’s just that WHEN you pluck or mute, it should be at those respective times.

Tony Iommi how about that bass on d’angelo’s album voodoo? Always early/late sort of creates an off beat flam which is very pleasing... how would you practice that?
