Sure, this video may not be as exciting as usual but more importantly, its useful. Traveling and off roading with dogs can have its drawbacks. Eating issues, drinking issues, pooping issues, driving issues. It can all make for a headache that makes some people want to just hire a pet sitter, or worse, leave them in a kennel while your away which is always stressful for the pup. Lets dive into how our dog Blue is pampered, more more importantly how we take care of her to make sure she has the best experience possible during overland travel. The tip with water (or how its called) bag for food is awesome, i will start doing it. Other tricks from me - have a pet ready med kit. A spare booties, bandages, alcohol wipes, tick remover... Also, having a sealable bowl with water (like in video) that fits just right into feeding bowl is a space saver. Having a long and short leash for dogs that want to roam (huskies etc...), so they can run around a little more during walks. A cooling mat, that is under seat protector, helps dog be cooler, but is not so slippery as when dog is right on it.

Your the second person to mention the cooling mat, I may have to look into that. Blue is always wanting to bake so I’m not sure how she would like it! 😂. Thanks for the tips. A medical kit is definitely something I carry but forgot to mention!

Loved this. Blue is such a beautiful gem. Side note-- sometimes the only motivation I have to go overlanding is because I want to be alone in nature with my dogs. Something about it just hits different.

She’s such a sweet dog! I hear you, this weekend I went out with just Blue to a remote place where she could chase (or wish she had the energy to chase) chipmunks without a leash. She’s never going to catch one, but I enjoy letting her be so free.

This a great video for anyone hesitant to bring their dog camping. Every dog has different needs on the trail and you covered all of them. Mine goes with me on every trip as well as every day to work but my other two get out far less and need a lot more attention.

I have had my FJ since I got my license at 16 lol. I'm now about to turn 29 this August! My local Toyota says mine has the lowest mileage of any other FJ Cruiser this age that they are aware of! I only ever used it for summer camping adventures over the course of 2 summers, until the 5th gen 4Runner released, and otherwise used other vehicles for daily use. So the low mileage was not intentional and is just a happy coincidence that will eventually make me a small fortune some day lol. Years ago my dad told me to hold on to it. He was aware of the value it will eventually have lol. It currently lives at my brother's shop, sitting among classic Toyota 4x4s waiting to be restored. In an area that is ventilated and humidity controlled. Connections! Lol Ok my rant is over lol. Excellent use of your FJ! I love seeing others so passionate about them! Also I just ordered that AC for my dogs lol. Thank you so much for bringing it to my attention!

Low mileage Fjs are hard to find! And yes, that AC will serve you well. Ours gets quite a bit of use at home too and it’s been very reliable!

just took my corgi 8 month old pup with me for a weekend getaway. he absolutely loved the outdoors. I took a self cooling gel mat, his bowl, a lockable tupperware with his food, poured him cold water from the gallon in the ice chest in small quantities. One thing he did not like? the bug zapping lantern. side eyes for days.

I leave engine on with air conditioner on all doors locked. Use two sets of keys with security setting on, keep lights on this spooks the hell out of people. CB on also sounds like police car😎

In some places leaving a vehicle idling can get a ticket. I have heard the new Tundra Hybrids have a vehicle off function so the AC will still run, sort of like how Tesla does. That could be a useful feature with the newer vehicles.

Haha yeah Natalia would kill me if fishy smell was in the cab of the Fj! The food bag as an inside plastic sort of liner, so I’ve never gotten whiffs of dog food but the food we use isn’t overly potent.

Good tips, we just got back from Deep Lake with our three (large) dogs, all the dipsered sites around Heart Lake were taken - on a Monday. Unfortunately with all the (welcome) rain this season the mosquito's won this time so we cut our stay a day shorter than planned. We have been using CBD oil and most of the products you presented with our 4-legged family members for a few years now. In addition we use a chest harness for clipping the dogs in the back seat area of my Taco for safety while traveling. Thanks for sharing, all good points and suggestions. We also carry a X-Pen for our dogs for when in camp so they can feel secure and stay with us without leashesplus it gives them a play area where they won't wander off. Yes, it may seem like a lot but they are part of our family and I wouldn't want to be out ther without them. Not to mention they are better at allerting us to bears and camp pirates - we ran into both this past week.

Do you by chance have a Thermacell already? The flat tops is always such a mosquito heavy area that my Thermacell gets a workout up there, but holy smoke does it help a lot. On the note of bears, I’ve always heard that a bear can smell something dead from miles away, and even how long it’s been dead to determine if the walk to it is worth the calories. Point being, have you ever had bears in camp with dogs around? I have always assumed them marking territory signals bear that another predator is freshly in the area. I’m mindful in bear country anyway, but I have to think the pups help keep them from making their approach.

@@IndependenceOverland Thanks for the Thermacell info - no we do not have one and try to use organic/holistic/natural products for the dogs - Deet is deadly for pets so that eliminates a lot of products. Bears, as you know, are all too common throughout the Flat Tops and we did encounter a few but the dogs started barking (0300 one morning) and a few camping neighbors were upset initially until they saw the bear running away. We keep our camp clean and were camping with our camper, so the food and trash were all contained. You are correct, bears have an incredible ability to smell dead carcasses and human trash. The dogs (not sure if plural makes a huge difference) do naturally help deter the CO black bear - not so much in Grizzly country. We have several bears around our home that we occasionally run into when walking the dogs. We live an hour plus west of Colorado Springs - western side of the Peak at 9K - very remote with a 6K ranch for our western property line. Really enjoy your material, thank you for being 'matter-of-fact' with your insights, finds, experience and opinions on products and what 'works' for you - refreshing. @@mikechandler3791 thanks Mike! I don’t like deer either, Thermacell is just a gadget that sits on a table and puts off a sort of small steam. They claim isn’t not harmful to people or pets but you know how that goes… but it does work and it works well. After turning it on, within 10 minutes the mosquitos will be gone. Yeah the CBD is the biggest help of all. Try it, but know that it isn’t very useful here and there. We learned it takes about 2 weeks of a daily dose before it builds up in the body. But it’s a game changer for traveling.

I have a TON more travel content coming this fall. Since I’m out almost every weekend, I fall behind on those kinds of projects during this time of the year. Travel content takes a lot of time, and I still have a job that requires about 55 hours a week from me. As soon as the camping season is over, my weekend get dedicated to travel videos and I have some seriously cool ones in the lineup!

It wasn't a problem at all. We did get her vaccines up to date and had the paper work printed out, but at the Mexico border they didn't care or even ask to see it,.

No unfortunately not. That would be a HUGE discount on their part. I was happy to have it for blue this weekend. We camped at 12k feet and during a cold storm snap Blue had a comfy warm snooze while it hailed on us! Video will be coming before too long!
