Season 1: beta testing Season 2, 3: keepin’ it country Season 4, 5, 6: prophet’s arrival Season 7: at least they look good i guss Season 8, 9, 10: loosing the faith Season 11, 12: rupaul takes her meds
ok but my favourite bit in the 'can i get an amen' rehearsal section is where it's roxxxy saying 'i think jinkx is the weakest' and then it immediately cuts to jinkx holding the longest and most pitch perfect note out of anyone in the whole episode lmao
Why is no one talking about Ivy Winters? Her voice was beautiful and she was so cute and sweet in and out of drag. Also, the whole jinkx and Ivy crush moment was iconic.
I had never heard of this but once I saw your comment I went and watched the interview, now I will think of it at least 2x a day thank you so much for this.
Haha I was just thinking “I finally got one of Mike’s outfits compliments!” But let’s be honest, black is a classic shirt color so we all styling today
“i love rolaskatox- i haven’t seen all stars 2” *honey, you got a big storm coming* “i love how alaska threatened to leave rolaskatox like five times and never did” oh my god big storm part two electric bogaloo.
alaska played the drag race audience like a damn fiddle in as2... still thinking she kept roxxxy and detox bc they were her friends when it was really a strategic move lol
@@benjamintic3653 alaska kept roxxxy because there was no way roxxxy was going to win. she was making it so that she was more likely to win by keeping the weakest link.
@@benjamintic3653 rolaskatox was barely a thing in season 5 lol. It was just something that the 3 of them made up for fun because they were the only smokers of the group and they saw each other on break. Roxxxy and Detox were much closer to each other than alaska was to either of them. Roxxxy obviously doesn’t know alaska that well because of her butchered ass snatch game of her. ‘Rolaskatox’ in as2 was all Alaska’s strategy, everyone says she was the one who came in with a plan.
one of my favourite alyssa moments is when they have to script a stand-up comedy show and she keeps laughing and detox immitates her i mean what a precious moment MIKE DO SEASON 6 NOW!!!!
I believed I was wearing a white t-shirt but mike said it is black so i immediately knew that was it for me, i'm officialy colorblind since he is way smarter than all of us
Can we just appreciate the fact how Mike just glosses over the sentence "That make up reminds me of the lesbian pigeon from the pigeon dating simulator that I am playing."?
Mike you need to watch all the other seasons. That is when you get the full experience of Drag Race and you get ALL the slangs and references. Shangelas ICONIC monologue to Mimi Imfirst on season 3 is literally the best thing to ever come out of that show.
I started with season 4 (mainly because I discovered Willam through RU-vid before knowing what drag race was) and that season for me is the best season to start with because it (to me) was a major shift in terms of how future seasons would be.
I read an article for a class called “She’s Not Acting, She Is” about season 3, and the way that race is needlessly upheld for the brown contestants but not for those with fair skin, all while the similar social construct is broken down. Very interesting
Eclipsa sure, so 1) the article talks about how two groups form among the contestants, one group (who were fair-skinned) called themselves the Heathers and named the other contestants (who were brown) the Boogers. This highlighted the way these two racial groups were then treated differently on the show. 2) Drag is all about breaking down the societal concept of gender and transforming yourself. This is why it was surprising how unsupportive the cast was of brown contestants exiting their racial stereotypes. 3) This upholding of race while breaking down gender makes race seem more real when it’s no more natural than gender. The authors write that “emphasizing the fluidity of sex(uality), while maintaining racial ‘realness’...had the unfortunate effect not only of commodifying or stereotyping race, but also reifying its presumed ‘naturalness’” (824). 4) One particular example I found shocking was when Yara Sofia, one of the brown contestants, expressed her intention to perform as (white) Amy Winehouse. Ru says, “You’re from Puerto Rico. She’s from England. How’re you going to do that?” (827). Yara decided to perform as Amy Winehouse anyways and the judges rejected this performance because “no one could understand Yara given her thick Puerto Rican accent” (827). However, being able to understand Yara was not an issue when she performed speaking Spanish, despite very few of the judges knowing the language (827). 5) One contestant, Raja, who appeared more racially ambiguous *was* successful in breaking down race in addition to gender, but this was only available to her due (ironically) to her race (830). If you have access to this type of article and want to see it yourself, it’s “She Is Not Acting, She Is” by Sabrina Strings and Long T. Bui, published in Feminist Media Studies in 2014, volume 14, no. 5, pages 822-836 and the doi is 10.1080/14680777.2013.829861.
@@cloudanimal5209 there was also the rudeness to contestants of colour from the judges. for example the judges calling Yara Sofia's traditional puerto rican outfit a "snuggie", then laughing at her when she didn't know what it meant
@@cloudanimal5209 wow such an interesting argument! I definitely had felt the racial stereotypes before but i never made this connection. It is so interesting that for a show so invested in breaking down gender stereotypes the racial stereotypes are so present.
For people watching the show as it came out, the double wig was a huuuuge moment. So many lipsyncs had wig removals and it had become so cringe and so stale, and Roxy capitalized on that. Genius.
"That black t shirt that you're wearing adds something new..." Me: FRANTICALLY changing out of the red striped t-shirt I was betting he'd talk about intimacy my black t-shirt
Okay... I know we’re all freaked out by the fact that mike knows what we’re wearing but can we just take a moment to appreciate that he’s FINALLY doing drag race??? ...I almost screamed when I saw the title
i love that you started watching drag race!!! i do want to tell you to not be afraid to go back an rewatch all of the seasons before season 5! all of those seasons are iconic in their own way and you will still LOVE THEM I PROMISE ! ! !
5 is the last of the original drag race imo and season 6 was a pivot into the updated drag race. season 5 is the first season i tell anyone to watch because it’s so essential to the whole show.
electric nachos i actually think the major queens that returned actually come across better if you watch them on All Stars before their original seasons - particularly Katya and Tatiana
I wish I could go back and watch all the seasons from the start without having seen them, you’re in for such a treat Mike. And All stars 2... oh wow just you wait.
-Mike's Mic: Everyone said that season 5 was the best starting point. -Raven, Jujubee, Tyra Sanchez, Tatianna, Shangela, Mimi Imfirst, Manila Luzon, Raja, Latrice Royale, Sharon Nettles, Phi Phi O'Hara, Willam, Yara Sofia: ARE WE A JOKE TO YOU?!
I feel like season 5 (or I would argue 4) is good place to start tho, you can always go back to the other seasons but idk if I could make it through season 1 without already loving drag race no tea no shade no pink lemonade
