Develop a system, then perfect it. The video here is "ok", not my best explanation but it was windy as heck and the mic was getting blown out. Moving fast and shooting line back upstream in a fast and efficient manner is essential.
Steps:
1. Preserve a minimum of one rod length of "fly line" as the fly floats back to you. Try to keep your fly on your casting side.
2. Raise the rod as the fly approaches and poise in a "roll cast ready" position.
3. Roll cast into the air to build some line speed and straighten out the line.
4. One false cast, shoot the line upstream at your next target.
5. Wash, rinse, repeat all day. Catch fish.

What a beautiful place. That water is crystal clear. They’re pretty muddy in my area of central Texas from lots of (much needed) rain lately. Great roll cast and fishing information..Thanks! 👍👍👌 Love your dog..Timber 🙂 Have a great weekend Joe.

This might sound silly but I am glad you taught me this without catching a fish. It made your presentation more simple and effective. And if I have learned one thing about fly fishing, it is that presentation is the key. I still suck at it but aspire to improve. The dog sold me on why I like you too.

Oh thanks, that is very helpful and nice feedback. I so often try to build around a "catch" and reverse engineer the technique but sometimes just fishing is more important. Thank you!

You bet thank you so much, lots of practice. I love fly casting, when you can handle the rod well everything else just gets so much easier.

Great video. I have never seen anyone else do this. I actually thought I had invented a technique that just worked for me! 😄 Thank you for validating this for me.

That is awesome, I can't tell you how many times I thought I invented a mend, move, fly pattern or whatever only to read it about in some old book haha. Thanks for sharing I got a relatable chuckle out of this.

I use this same technique when saltwater fishing on the flats. Good stuff!

Oh yes I can see that, straight line recovery, back cast and shoot. Makes sense. Good comment.

Great technique for staring a cast with a sinking line too get it on the surface and straighted out in front of you. I do this a lot striper fishing off the beach too

Everyone is a good angler in Joe’s family; including the dog! He knows where to stand and when to move… hahahaha. Is that the Naches, Joe?

Great Video! I'm looking at ditching my Sling Bag and going to a Waist/Lumber Bag. What is your Setup you're wearing there? I'm also liking the idea of switching my Net Setup to the behind my back configuration. Any Tips/Recommendations on it? Thanks.

Did you get any good fish? I haven’t tried the teanaway river this year yet. I’ll give that roll cast tip a shot as well. I started fly fishing a bit over a year ago and I’ve always stripped the fly line in to about 3 feet when I’m fishing up stream. I can see how the roll cast would be very helpful and save time.

No it was so windy that day, I think the pressure change had them on the bottom because I walked through some holes that should coughed up at least one fish. River is in perfect shape. I would get up there soon as the snow is essentially gone in the high country. It's going to be a lean summer thanks to the Jolly fire in 2017.

The Teanaway River. It's great in the early summer, but gets pretty low later in the year.

Never have, and never will, understand why anyone would take their dog on this kind of adventure. Especially when he is roaming around in the very water RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE CASTING...(!?!) "wish I could have hooked a big one...." he says.....well, duuuh...trout are so always attracted to water inhabited by both a canine as well as a human, aren't they ?....hehehe Great advice on the casting....but sorry, not much common sense displayed in utilizing his surroundings as best as he could.
