Every day, at least one child dies every 45 seconds from pneumonia; that is over 700,000 children under five, including over 150,000 newborns per year. Pneumonia can lower blood oxygen, leading to organ damage or failure, and even death.
At least 35 percent of deaths from childhood pneumonia could be averted with medical oxygen. Supplemental medical oxygen increases the amount of blood oxygen taken through the lungs, alleviating symptoms and improving organ function.
This is why CHAI, with financial support from Unitaid and other partners, is helping countries such as Rwanda establish sustainable oxygen infrastructure to ensure all patients, including children, have access to medical oxygen when and where they need it.
