El legendario dibujante de Vampirella Esteban Maroto, dibujando durante la Expocomic 2010 de Madrid. The legendary Vampirella artist Esteban Maroto, drawing during Expocomic 2010 in Madrid.
I never really thought about were these drawings came from, but all of the spanish artists had this magical quality. As a child i remember that there were certain Warren magazine that were much better than other ones. Only recently (when i started researching on the internet) did i realize that they were from the "spanish" period. It's like watching a nightmare on paper.
I love the little bat highlight in her hair. Vampirella has always been a favorite of mine, she’s hard for me to depict as an artist, though the history of these artists is definitely helping me achieve the image in my head.
True. Neal Adams, Berni Wrightson (a genius who refined the art of Graham Ingles of EC Comics), Steve Ditko and many of the other americans were also great. I got a little carried away before ;-)
I googled him and I recognize the artwork but I don't remember the name. I found these comics in the early 90's, in danish used book stores. They were very rare but once in a while i got lucky. At that time i thought all of the artists were american, but when i found out that a large number of them were spanish I realized were this strange, unsettling tone in some of the stories came from. There is something about 70's horror from southern Europe that you just can't find anywhere else.
Well there were some American ones who were the best: Berni Wrightson, Corben, just to name a few. However it is true that the Spanish pool of artists specialiced on horror comics were superb: Maroto, Fernando Fernandez, Luis Bermejo, Jesus Ortiz, etc. And much latter: Corominas (high Wrightson influence) Miguel Angel Prado, Santi Perez (look for this guy in FB), etc... Unrepeatable period!!
I've always been on the fence with Esteban's comic art, especially when he worked for Warren. He seems cluttered and messy. I end up having to struggle to visually to resolve what he has drawn.
