Big John Buscema (aka Sal's older brother) defined a host of Marvel heroes from The Silver Surfer and Thor, to The Avengers and his lengthy stint on Conan (often with Ernie Chan). #marvelcomics #captainamerica #Buscema

FANTASTIC!!!! It's no wonder John Buscema inked his books most of the time!!! His technique of finishing his pencils with brush & ink is flawless!!!! Myself , as an artist , I have a GREAT fear of doing that!!!! This is why he was THE Michaelangelo of comics!!!! He just demonstrated!!!! REST IN PARADISE!!!!🏖️

Actually I don't think Buscema inked most of the time, only that he should have. If you look at most of his Conan run it was most often inked by Ernie Chan. And most of his Avengers stuff was Tom Palmer, I think. In his later years some of Buscema's stuff suffered because he was doing very loose layouts and leaving most of the detail to the inkers. But he was indeed a MIchelangelo of comics.

@@GodLovesComics I read an interview where John Buscema admitted that for the most part if he didn't have to rush to meet a deadline , he would rather ink himself or have his brother ink his work. He did ink some of his early Avengers run!! Mostly the issues that featured Hercules!! I noticed for the most part , as he admitted he hated doing Superheroes ,if any of his Superhero assignments featured any Gothic themes , he would ink!! There was quite a few!!🤔🤔🤔

@@randolphdixon891 Yup, he hated doing superheroes (which makes it all the more amazing that he did Avengers and so many others). He liked Conan. As for inking, the problem is that they were always rushed for deadlines. Nearly every penciller would have inked their own work if they had that luxury. I'm pretty sure I also have a video uploaded of Buscema drawing at Angouleme alongside Philippe Druillet and Burne Hogarth (I think?). It's great to know that Sal Buscema is still alive at age 88.

@@randolphdixon891 Yes, I'm very happy he is still going strong. He got treated very poorly at Marvel in his final years, but he feels like the last link to the old Marvel bullpen now that Joe Sinnott and John Romita have recently passed. Long live, Sal!

I grew up 'Marvelling' at John Buscema's art, (I'm 61) everyone has their favourite artist but for me John was the Michaelangelo of Comic Book Art. This takes me back to my youth

Few if any comics artists could even approach John Buscema's technical proficiency.

Issue 115 of Capt. America, from spring of 1969 was done by him, as well as the great cover a few months later for avengers annual 3.

In an interview Roy Thomas said they worked really well together although Buscema referred to everyone as "idiots".

I love Big John's Cap. Does anybody know when this was filmed? Was he ill atvthis stage?
@GodLovesComics
@GodLovesComics 5 месяцев назад
I'm not sure when it was filmed but it looks very close to the same time as the interview he did that appears on Comic Book Historians which is dated 2001. If so rather heartbreaking because he died in 2002. When you ask if he was ill. did he have cancer? It seems like he died rather suddenly since he seemed in decent shape at this point. Unless, of course you're referring to how he is breathing.

@@GodLovesComics Yes I beleive he did infact succumb to cancer.

@@frankandstern8803 Well that just sucks! Sal is still alive and well by the way. The really sad thing is that in that Shoot Interview Buscema tells a really funny story about being at a convention in Spain and he told the translator that He had a contract with his lawyer that he would live to be 110 years old. And he found out later that it was mis-translated to tell the audience that he had a contract with his lawyer to live for ten more years. I don't know when that convention took place, but of course whenever that interview was recorded he didn't live too long past that. Really sad also because he wanted to start painting.
