00:20 Intro
-Estonia and Finland are two countries in northern Europe with many similarities, but also many differences.
-They both offer high quality of life and great opportunities for job seekers and entrepreneurs. They also share a number of cultural and historic elements, and even a pretty similar language.
-However, they share important differences in many aspects, such as taxes, residence permits and ease of doing business.
-Let’s compare them in terms of: job market, cost of living, real estate, visas and residence permits, taxes, weather and climate, entertainment, language.
01:20
-Northern Europe, Baltic sea
-Finland is a much larger country, in territory and population
-Both countries are full EU members, euro currency.
-Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union, (Finland was part of the Russian empire way back)this caused a critical difference in how the economy of EE and FI are currently.
01:49 Job Market
-During the past years, unemployment has been higher in Finland than in Estonia, although the gap is narrowing.
-Salaries in Finland are still significantly higher than in Estonia, but the gap is also narrowing. While salaries in Estonia have grown sharply during the past decade. In Finland, the wage growth was quite modest in the past 10 years. Average net salaries are about 2500 euros per month in Helsinki, and half of that in Tallinn.
-It is definitely easier to find a job in Estonia than in Finland if you are an expat. Estonia is doing a lot of efforts to bring foreign talent (low taxes, ease of doing business). Since salaries are lower in Estonia, it also makes more sense for companies to bring foreign talent at a lower overall cost.
-However, if you manage to find a job in Finland, although harder, the pay will also be higher.
03:02 Cost of Living
-While both countries are EU members and use the euro single currency, the cost of living in Estonia and Finland is greatly different.
-Finland is considerably more expensive than Estonia. That is the case in every aspect of the cost of living. Real estate, groceries, and services. While the differences are not so sharp when you go to the supermarket, the price of housing and any type of service is much higher in Finland.
03:51 Real Estate
-Real estate is probably the aspect with the strongest differences between Estonia and Finland.
-This is especially the case if we compare the capital Helsinki and Tallinn.
-Currently prices per square meter in Helsinki are more than double of what they are in Tallinn.
-Rental yields and growth potential are slightly higher in Tallinn than Helsinki. So if you want to invest in real estate, probably Tallinn is the best choice.
04:43 Visa and Residence Permits
-Visa and residence permit policies in Estonia and Finland are similar and relatively flexible.
-Both countries offer visa options for freelancers and entrepreneurs. And you can also stay in the country for a while after your studies to look for a job.
-Estonia offers a new type of visa for digital nomads. But I consider the residence permit for self-employed persons a better deal (permanent residency and citizenship)
05:41 Taxes
-Taxes are another aspect in which Estonia and Finland are extremely different.
-Corporate taxes in Finland are competitive to those in Estonia, but in Estonia you can defer tax payments, and also get a lower rate if you meet some conditions. So Estonia wins at a corporate level.
-At a personal level Estonia is much more attractive than Finland with a flat tax rate of 20%. In Finland personal income tax is progressive at a national level, and there is also a hefty municipal tax. If you are a high income earner it can go above 50%.
06:21 Weather and Climate
-The weather and climate are similar in Estonia and Finland.
-They are both ranked among the coldest countries in Europe and in the world.
-Most of the Finnish population lives in the South of the country, in which the climate is nearly identical as in Estonia.
-However as you go North in Finland, temperatures are even lower and the climate is subarctic in most of the country.
06:59 Infrastructure
-Infrastructure in Estonia and Finland are excellent in both countries.
-Finland is a highly developed nation for many decades. Considering its low population density, it still has a great railway network, going up North in the country.
-The infrastructure in Estonia has developed immensely since the 1990’s. Since the country is rather small and got EU funds to improve its infrastructure, it was a rather swift process.

Most accurate description of these 2 countries I've seen. Many people don't know how soviet occupation effected not only Estonian people but also our economy, it was basically stand-still for half a century. Before that we were there with the Finns. So as there was standstill, if also affected people. Finnish are more calm, a true welfare society, everything is under control and no need to rush really. They just gotta keep doing what they've been doing in Finland to keep the high level. When Estonia is still in that rushing period. Everybody trying to achieve the level of welfare. So basically, we try to make up the time we lost under Soviet occupation, so maybe that's why you see many successful start-ups and growth companies coming from here. As I'm kid from the '80s, I feel real close ties to Finland, cause we had Finnish TV channels back then, it was only non soviet, a real european free TV we could see back then, totally different from boring soviet propaganda programs. So many estonians watched Finnish TV instead and as languages are quite similar then you learned Finnish in 1-2 years, just by watching their TV. So people from the 60's-80's have way more closer ties with Finland, than current younger generation does.

To amplify what or dearly loved Mr President had just said. During the 80's the national output of Estonian CCP was about 40 billion rubles that all went into the central "bank" of the CCCP, but only 20 billion rubles came back each year... Thus, Estonia was the biggest cash cow for the CCCP when you compare its GDP.

Finnish and Estonian are both very similar. For an English speaker both languages have the same difficulty. What's important however is that there will be more resources available to you in Finland. Estonia is very much a new country which does not always remember to provide certain services to the general public. Secondly both have second languages. Russian in Estonia and of course Swedish in Finland. Source: Investor in Estonia. Visited both countries for 10+ years. Live in Estonia.

Salary taxes are not lower in Estonia than they are in Finland. For anything up to 2500eur net, the total taxation is lower in Finland. Estonia has 20% income tax + 33% social tax from all salaries. The employer has to pay it, so the employees rarely know how much tax they are paying exactly.
@tankart3645
@tankart3645 2 года назад
The +33% social tax also exists in Sweden, and if I'm rigth also in Finland. It's the Nordic standard I think that the employer pays a tax for the employee.
@tankart3645
@tankart3645 2 года назад
Also you have to think that there are standards Scandinavian taxes like climate taxes and so on, what don't exist in Estonia. That's also why gas is so much cheaper in Estonia as the state taxes it less, as the money the business in country gets from the lower gas taxes makes upp a bigger profit than taxing the gas itself.

@madsbuhris

So correct me if Im wrong. The avg Salary in Estonia is 1538 euros according to stats. Do you really pay 20 pct tax of that? I dont know if anybody in Finland earns that little but if they would, the income tax would be around 7-8 pct for a such small Salary. Finnish avg salary is 3140 euros and for that amount you pay around 20 pct tax. So in reality the taxation for income is much higher in Estonia for normal income takers. Keeping in mind that if you earn under or upto 14.000 euros per year in Finland you dont have to pay any income tax at all.
@Namunumm

@mrsmerily

I think in Estonia if your earn sth like 6000€ in a year you dont have to pay any tax either. But yeah, for usual wage, even avarage wage the prices are getting to high. If you have good pay you live really nicely in Estonia. I also tend to think that small wages in finland standard mean you live pretty badly thats why localt dont want to do them.

Finland was never a part of Soviet union, but Estonia was. Finland was directly a part of Sweden over 600 years. Estonia was not. Estonia was a colony of Sweden and a shorter time. Finland has got similarites with other Nordic countries much more. Estonia's economy is far behind from Nordic countries. However it is rising. World economic Forum conference in Switzerland Davos ranked Finland the best country 2019. Also World happines index report and UN ranked Finland the happiest country 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021. Also other Nordic countries are in top ten. Ex Soviet countries or East Baltic countries and Russia have not achived that.
@tankart3645
@tankart3645 2 года назад
Finland is also the most depressed country in the world for the past 5 years, and generally very conservative and somewhat homofobic. As someone who has lived in Estonia and in sweden for longer bits of time, I can say that Estonia is much more Nordic than statics and haters say. For exemple from my experience of living in Sweden I can with 100% certainly say that Estonia is technologicaly more advanced, least on the civil side. It's welfare benifits also are on a higher level than Swedens. And I know a lot of people who after visiting Estonia call Estonia more of their image of Sweden than Sweden itself is. With more modern buildings and architecture and better education Estonia really competes with the Nordic countries, and it's just the matter of time when the Nordic countries have to accept the fact that Estonia is much better than they make it seem to be or belive in.
@tankart3645
@tankart3645 2 года назад
Also against the popular belief, Sweden was the longest occupier of Estonia. And Finland shares a much more culture with Russia than Estonia does, that always has looked down on Russian culture or even tried to get rid of it all together. And these my opinions come from my real life experiences not on something a paper says, written by a person thousand of kilometers away that had never stepped a foot in neither of these countries. (that was methaporical)

Geographically speaking, Estonia is actually less east than Finland and far more northern than Denmark or Southern Sweden where most people live. Soviet geopolitical view was to separate both Finnic nations from each other, and it was implemented by propaganda and education system. That's because there were plans to create a separate Finnic region or even a united state, but that was disturbed by the WWII and Soviet occupation.
