Estwing Duct Knife: Twice the edges for twice the fun! And a striking cap to boot! 

I'm looking forward to a video about the "designed in USA" trend. I've been thinking about that recently as well; seems deceptive.

I use that milwaukee duct knife every day for HVAC work. There's almost nothing it won't cut. Full Tang. It's truly a beast

Man, you've hit on an aggravation: "Designed in USA, made in china". Spot on. That's the biggest reason I refuse to buy any over-priced Yeti crap. "Designed in Austin, made in china" & priced as if it were made in Austin by master craftsmen. Remember when tools made here were better tools? I remember.

The glocks are bayonets. For the Steyr aug I believe.

Most of these knives are designed to fit nicely into a gloved hand. There's a certain kind of glove that everyone uses,, a sort of dipped fabric glove (I'm sure you're familiar) ,, and if wearing one,, the Milwaukee knife grips really well,, and the gimping works well also.

Don't forget Estwings classic camp axe and theyve come with a double bit throwing axe thats indestructable.Crazy sick

But does it have a full tang like the Milwaukee does?

The flex knives are designed to have a weight in their handle so that if they are dropped, they don't drop with the blade first

Eatwing also has a "tactical" tanto fixed blade - combo edge.. in AUS-8. I like Estwing hammers & especially their picks for my Geo work. It's sad that these are Chinese made, unlike their hand tool counterparts.. but they are still a nice product. They are priced right too. The Estwing Duct knife is definitely a better buy over the Milwaukee. I also have both & the overall quality control & feeling is just better.

I bought a Malco brand duct knife a good 15 years ago and have managed to not lose and not break it I heard a product commercial on the radio the other day “Designed and engineered in Germany” . Right away I thought ohhh more chinesium crap.

I was going to buy a duct knife as I had to install a couple UV lights in my supply plenums. I had a razor knife handy and it worked perfectly. I know A/C installers use duct knives but that razor worked for me in a one (two) off. Have you ever used a Work Shop sharpener? I have the Ken Onion Elite system. That's a pretty nice system. Same folks who own Drill Doctor. Have one of those as well. Probably would make an interesting video. Good people too over there.

Don't think Spyderco uses aus-8 anymore. Been nice to see a lot of knives these days have gone to at least D2

Good review. Chinese manufacturered products can be well made as these Estwing,Milwaukee and Toughbuilt Duct Knifes are all well made products- tools. The Estwing Duct Knife seems to resemble the Klein Duct Knife. The Estwing Duct Knife could use a Lanyard hole to secure the Duct Knife with a Lanyard or to a pole as an improvised Spear. For such versatile multiple functions, I prefer the Milwaukee and Toughbuilt Duct Knifes.

The last knife you could run double edged tape or paracord on the handle. Also the Milwalkee Duct knife you can run paracord through its handle.

Aus 8 spiderco blades are kinda rare. Cold steel is much more known for using aus 8

The finger belly on the Milwaukee is preferable. I picked up the insulation cutter version that is longer I guess.

In truth, if you are looking for a Duct Knife to be used for ducts then you're better off getting something like the Klein 89554. If you are doing Flex Duct work quite often then getting the Malco FDC3 is the expensive all in one tool.

I get a ton of those "exotic high-end knife videos" touting a supposed EDC for $100 or $200USD. Fact is I have had a $20 MILWAUKEE for years and it has never failed me. I share this because sometimes I think people forget the fundamental utility of a knife is not in exotic wood scales or tungsten alloy blades but in whether or not the damn things get the job done when demanded. Just sayin.....

Im disappointed that estwing never did a series of drop forged large fixed blade knives! They did do one machete but in my opinion it was a huge miss!

I think the striking surface on the butt is for using a hammer to easily pierce sheet stock

Nobody I knew ever bought “duct knives” the laggers just went to a cheapo ironmongers and bought serrated kitchen knives !

That AUS8 is more commonly used by Cold Steel than Spyderco, in my experience. I own many knives in both brands, but not really any of the budget-steel Spydies.

The problem with duct knives like Milwaukee or fluke or Klien only idiots or new guys in the hvac field but them, you get the same result from a $1 steak knife

Designed in USA is such a gimmick as is made in USA with global materials (IE it shipped to us from China and we put a logo on it stateside) I hate not buying USA made but sometimes it’s inevitable.

The design cycle goes like this. They go to china on business, and they look at knives of this type, and find one they like a lot, maybe they have to specify better materials and some extra beef in a few places. Then they apply their logo with a click and drop. The logo is presumably something they slaved over for months or years, so when they apply that to the design, they are obliterating the design cost of the underlying chinese design (that might have been stolen form Gerber in the first place). So if someone had to look at the design hours they put into this product to qualify it as even American made, they could honestly take the US logo value alone as a huge contribution. And that is it. A few hours. Of course Estwing makes hammers, and other tools, so they would want to morph some of that look onto the knife to make it fit into the lineup. Still, for less well established and designed tools, the design overrides could be pretty minimal. I know I could appropriate a design like this in a few hours.
