ESXI 6.7 Install on the Dell R710 Server 

I have found a lot of "unsupported" processors and servers work just fine under the latest version of ESXi, they just don't test them. Thanks for the video.

I installed esxi 7.0 on the r710 w e56xx and x56xx cpu's. It works ! Used the dell iso to install.

I just installed the 'regular' ESXi 6.7 image on a Dell R710 and it works, seemed to go fine. I'm doing some more testing, eventually I may install the Dell image just in case.

Nice to ESXI 6.7 making it's way on the channel! IIRC the Dell version just includes tweaks and drivers for whatever server it was made for (which is a nice time saver). The nice thing about ESXI is it runs the actual hypervisor OS from memory so the USB is essentially just the boot medium (you probably knew that). Also it looks like you have the enterprise daughter card for your iDRAC 6 so you could stick an SD card with all your ISOs on it in the iDRAC on the back so you don't have to mess with USB sticks in the future. Just use the iDRAC web portal to mount the images when you want to install an OS. Hope you get over the illness, seems like everyone is getting sick lately...

Thank you for the video. I am facing the same interest, to try keeping an old R710 in service. You state in the video, that the Dell build is for R710. Where do you see this? I am familiar with Dell builds and how they have a general compatibility listing of Dell models. Just not seeing R710 specifically stated and was curious to see it. Regardless, glad to see it work!

FYI ... Dell's ESXi 6.7 image failed to install with Xeon X5560 CPUs (incompatible processors). However, Dell's ESXi 6.0 U3 image did install OK.

Might have been rewritten to be compatible with the EPYC series of processors as well as the Threadripper series of processors.

@Joe, in the H200 controller the -IR @ post means its the IR firmware, if you dont create raid volumes like you said it'd be totally fine, if you had say 2x2YB you dont care about, you could create a RAID0 for ESXi VM storage and the rest of the drives would act like normal for windows, SMART/etc if it had -IT it'd be the IT firmware tho happy its more or less an LSI rebrand card, you could even slap in a non Dell HBA/RAID card if it was LSI, try that on HP servers and they cry like little girls like hardware not supported and disables the PCIe slot at least on my HP DL385 Gen7 that eats 330 watts under full load, may toss ESXi on it and use NFSv4 for VM storage because setting up iSCSI is just meh as it works just as well, anyhow good video, was going to suggest using vmware workstation to connect to it instead of the client i saw the icon on your desktop, can create VMs on desktop, then "upload" to ESXi, might be slow even on 1g, but there you go for something to try if you haven't already and good luck

Using 6.5 right now since I have "production" data on my home server. Need to use PCI pass-through for my HBA for Freenas. Can you confirm pass-through still works on 6.7 (and 6.7U1)

Unkyjoe.... I really enjoy your videos. I recently acquired a well-equipped Dell R710 server for my home-lab. Tried ESXi 6.7 (from internal USB stick) but it did not recognize any raid storage. ESXi 6.5 installed and recognized storage so I'm up and running. What are your thoughts about how to diagnose & upgrade hardware in the 710 to make it compatible with newer ESXi versions? Is that worthwhile or maybe too-costly? CPU: Xeon X5670 x 2 Raid Controller: PERC7

OK now here's the real challenge - did you find an OpenManager Server Administrator VIB that works with setup? (ESXi 6.7 on Dell R710). This would be handy. Cheers.

That is very nice of you for putting up all these videos for people like me. I have a Dell R710 with CPU Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5550 @ 2.67GHz and having issues installing the ESXi 6.7. Getting error "unsupported CPU ". I have updated the firmware and the Life Cycle with no avail. Is there a way to force the VMware into thinking that it has a supported CPU? I am using this in my lab and wouldn't like to purchase a new server. Your advice will be very much appreciated.

If anyone has the 55xx cpus that are also supported on R710, they can test if the install fails because of it. It may be that 56xx are "supported" (installable), but not the 55xx

I just tried it on a 710 and I got an error (upgrading from 6.5 to 6.7) Unsupported CPU Intel Family 0x06 , model 0x1a, stepping 0x5 Intel Xeon CPU x5550 @ 2.67 Ghz. thought it would for a 710 ? (I am getting this once I boot up from the USB)

Hi, can u tell me about perc H700 raid controller? I want to install esxi 6.7 to dell r710 with H700 controller. Is this supported by esxi 6.7? VMware Compatibility Guide says the only supported version is 6.0.

When I tried the Dell 6.7 exsi a few months ago, I ran into a problem where I wanted to use direct pass through on a nic to my windows server. When I tried it, it appeared that it wanted to keep the four nic’s as two pairs and I was never successful in doing what I wanted. I’d love to go back if someone has a solution to this issue.

E56xx is still supported. E55xx is not.
