Important notes from VMware documentation:
ESXi 7.0 Installation on M.2 and Other Non-USB Low-End Flash Media
Unlike USB flash devices, the ESXi installer creates system storage volumes and a VMFS datastore on M.2 and other non-USB low-end flash media. If you deploy a virtual machine or migrate a virtual machine to this boot device datastore, the boot device can be worn out quickly depending on the endurance of the flash device and the characteristics of the workload. As even read-only workloads can cause problems on low-end flash devices, you should install ESXi only on high-endurance flash media.
If you install ESXi on M.2 or other non-USB low-end flash media, delete the VMFS datastore on the device immediately after installation. For more information on removing VMFS datastores, see the vSphere Storage documentation.

I have been wanting a bare metal server for years and being new to this type of hardware along with the software, this video touches on every part of the server that I need to address, like the updates and even the iDRAC. I just bought a Precision tower 7910 for home use Thanks for taking the time to make this video, it is going to be extremely helpful.

Check the compatibility list at VMware to make sure your server and CPU combo are supported. Having said that, I was able to install version 7 on an old Dell server recently in a lab environment just to see how it would react. We didn't end up making a video but it is doable. I wouldn't put it in a production environment, obviously, but it's possible with a little installation magic.

Hey Bob, your video was really amazing and indeed very insightful. However would like to know few things: 1) Min specification required for a test setup (in lab) in terms of Cores,RAM, Storage size in order to accommodate few VMs/containers for testing purpose (as ESXi ver 7 does support K8s as per my understanding) 2) Could HP server Gen9/10 would also be a good option to go with as opposed to Dell R440/R640 servers? 3) Any tips from your side that i should take care of before the lab setup with VMware softwares installed in it? Thank you once again in advance
@BobPellerin
@BobPellerin 4 года назад
It's very difficult to say how much you need for a small server with some VMs as your VMs can need anywhere from 20GB each to, well, hundreds each depending on what you end up loading on them. You should be able to load it comfortably if your "server" has 4 cores, 8GB and a couple hundred GB free. You can use Intel or AMD processors, but they must support hardware virtualization (Intel VT-x or AMD RVI). You may have to enable this in the BIOS. it would work not only on Xeon processors but also on PC processors such as a recent Intel i9, i7, i5, i3, for example. I've done that a few times during an emergency where I need to test something with multiple servers and all the "real" servers were at capacity or I couldn't risk running a test on the production VMs. You can also get VMware Workstation and load the ESXi on top of that if it is just to test and get familiar with the settings and interface.

Great video quick question. I have a Dell R720 with 4 sockets and 64 cores I want to set up only 1 vm (server2019) that's all I need. And I want to use all 4 sockets and as much of the cores as possible mins what esxi 7 needs to run on. Is there a socket limit and a core limit per vm. Or do I need to buy the licenses to unlock that feature. I tryed Esxi 6 and I could not use all the power my server had to offer. Thanks for your help
@BobPellerin
@BobPellerin 4 года назад
If you have the Standard ESXi version here are the limits per VM (as per their documentation) for 7, 6.7 and 6.5 - 128 CPUs - 6TB vRAM Is it possible you are using the Hypervisor (Free version)? Version 7 Hypervisor (Free) limits: At the Host level: Unlimited Physical CPUs per Host. Unlimited Cores per CPU. Unlimited Physical Memory Cannot Be Managed with vCenter. vStorage API Is Not Available. At the VM level: Max 8 vCPU per Each VM. You'll have to double check the compatibility of the CPUs you are using. They have disallowed (their word) these in version 7: Intel Family 6, Model = 2C (Westmere-EP) Intel Family 6, Model = 2F (Westmere-EX) Hope that answers your question.

Shaback: Here are three things to try: 1) Upgrade the firmware of the controller to the latest. 2) Re-install ESXi using the latest manufacturer's custom ISO for the version you want 3) Get the latest VIB file (driver) and use that (if #2 fails). You can also call support. It should be detected automatically. I have seen a case where the firmware was at the latest and simply forcing a re-installation fixed the problem. Dell support were as confused by this as I was, so that's not common at all.

Thanks for the video. It's clear easy to understand and very helpful. I have few questions though. 1. I hear you installed the ESXi on a USB drive. Is there a reason/advantage to that vs installing it on the hard disk as you would with a Windows OS? 2. What is the capacity or size of both the bootable USB from Rufus and the one you installed ESXi on? 3. Finally Do you have a video of how to join an ESXi host to a domain so it can be reached using a hostname in place of IP address? Thanks you!
@BobPellerin
@BobPellerin 4 года назад
Hi, Glad you enjoy these videos! 1. I've worked with a lot of VMware installations over the years and I found early on that legal firms were especially fond of loading the ESXi off a USB key. It keeps the ESXi off all drives. If it breaks, keep a copy close by. If it fails, simply plug the spare in and voila! One firm would install new versions of ESXi on a new USB key and revert back if needed. You can do either for sure. Keep in mind companies like Dell offer a dual SD reader in their servers for this reason. 2. I tend to use high quality short metal USB stick with 32GB or 64GB which gives me room for local logs and so forth. I've seen client use 16GB ones when I show up to repair / fix crashed hosts. The ESXi should clock in under 500MB from memory. 3. Actually your DNS entry would fix that. If you add HOST1.yourdomain.com to your DNS then you will be able to get to it using HOST1 instead of the IP. See my vCenter video (releasing next week). It mentions that.

Are you familiar with the IDRAC update issues with SHA1 ? and the recent removal of the ability to manually control fans in recent IDRAC updates ? I have a used T420, and can't update BIOS without a newer IDRAC version, that has updated SHA, but may take the fan control away. I think it's one of the newest updates that took the Fan control ability away. Wondering what you may or may not have done in relation to this.
@BobPellerin
@BobPellerin 4 года назад
I was aware of the SHA1 situation in a general way. I generally use the Dell Repository Manager to update servers as I find the iDrac and other methods aren't getting the latest updates in a timely manner. The R640 I recently made of video of, for example, showed everything as updated in iDrac but the DRM provided several updates including the BIOS. Since I don't run Windows on bare metal, it has been my preferred method for years. I'm not familiar with the removal of the fan control int he latest updates. My videos may leave you to think I install servers in my living room :), but in reality I only really see them in server rooms and data centers where the fans are muffled and ignored (sound wise) unless they trigger an alert for stopping. Hope that helps. You can contact me via my www.cobaltium.com site if you'd like more one on one info.

Like you, although my work is network related, generally I don't see my equipment anymore, and this is the first live device I've had in my home for five or six years. It's a preference. I used to use the offical ISO and then add the VIBs I needed. It became a huge waste of time as all the proper drivers are on the Dell ISO. So I use the Dell ISO now and make sure to get the latest.

@BobPellerin
@BobPellerin 3 года назад
The "free" version (a.k.a. Hypervisor) requires you to create an account on the MyVMware portal and getting a license (keycode). . It is, as far as I can tell, the full ESXi ISO that you download. It will give you a trial period where all features and functionality is available. Once you enter the keycode, you will be restricted to the fuctionality and limitations of the "free" version. The hypervisor is very powerful as-is and should be good enough for a home lab.

That is a great way to do it. The Dell EMC repository manager seems to provide more up-to-date drivers at times. More of the time it doesn't make that much of difference. In the field I like to have the ISO on a USB stick just in case.

Both machines shows the purple screen of death around 30 seconds into the installation screen. On v7.0.3 we got the error " failed to initialize timer psuedoTSC ". After viewing your video i am wondering is it because i didn't update to the latest firmware and bios version using the DRM. I would love to hear your thoughts. Thank you.
@BobPellerin
@BobPellerin 2 года назад
I haven't seen that specific error, but I would upgrade the firmware of the all the major components. Try loading the ESXi to a USB stick just as a test to see if it is RAID controller or SATA related. Run diagnostics on the components to make sure you didn't get a bad memory chip or something. I once got a brand new Dell server that crashed with a purple screen at installation. Dell and I were both a little stomped. We reloaded the firmware on the NIC and it fixed it. Same version. Thankfully we thought to try this relatively quickly or it would have wasted a lot of time. I'm not saying this is your problem, but rather try to see where it is crashing. Good luck!

I never tried to run Windows Pro on a bare metal server. Windows 11 requires TPM 2 which you most likely don't have. You might have a hard time getting some components to work for lack of drivers. All you need is to download the ISO and burn it. Boot from the USB and see what happens. You'll have the whole "will it see the RAID" question. Let us know how it works out! If you have a log or pictures of the result I can put it up on my blog at ctobob.com if you're interested in sharing.

I’m not sure I understand the context that would make you ask that question. The short answer is no. It sounds like you should be using the workstation product and not the ESXi. That's strange. Without knowing the specs of the hardware and so forth I would make sure to update the BIOS and to get a VMWare image that has the correct drivers (HP version, Dell version). You may have to load the VIBs associated with your controller. I ran across a weird problem a while back where the 10Gb NIC would no show up even thought the driver was there and up to date. Turned out the driver was messed up. We ended up reapplying the firmware to the card and it started working.

It's extremely difficult to disagnose with comment exchanges only. Yo may be dealing with a driver or hardware issue. Try booting to another OS and see if it'll detect the RAID. If you're loading from a USB key try replacing it and re-installing another build or version of ESXi. That shouldn't take long to see if the problem is still there. Use the Dell ISO to make sure you have the driver pre-loaded or else you'll have to find and deal with the VIB file(s).

I'm not 100% sure I understand which password you forgot, but I'll assume it's not the VMware site to get the installation ISO file (the site's "Forgot password" would fix that) and that you don't have the VMware root password. The fastest trick (and easiest) would be to re-install a new VMware ESXi onto an SD or USB stick and then import your VMs from the existing datastore. If you have the whole thing locked down and encrypted then ... You pretty much have to restore from backups to a new VMware ESXi installation. If you use Acronis or Veeam, that should be simple enough.
