I finally finished my Etchr A4 Watercolour Cold Press Sketchbook! January 2022 - August 2023.
The paper sizing had been deteriorating for quite a while, and I had to give up filming in it because it had become too annoying to use! I finished the last few pages with some gouache paintings, and now I'm ready to flip through the entire book, which is finished from cover to cover. Speaking of covers, I also painted the outside of the book because the white canvas was looking very scuffed and grubby, so it needed a fresh new makeover. I hope you enjoy seeing the finished book, and let me know in the comments if you have experienced any issues (like dodgy paper sizing) with your Etchr books, or if I was just unlucky with a bad batch. 😭
Because I haven't had a good experience with the Etchr sketchbooks, I'm not going to link them here, but here are a few other products I showed in the video which ARE actually good!

Art Spectrum Artists' Acrylic Clear Gesso - This stuff is really hard to find outside of Australia, but here is a link to my local art shop: theartshop.com...
(Note that this particular gesso is very smooth, whereas a lot of clear gesso brands dry very rough like sandpaper, eg Liquitex, so shop around to find the smooth ones).
The gold pen is a Pilot Super Color Gold, fine tip. Also seems to be super hard to find!

Becky - what a wonderful journey through your sketchbook! So many gorgeous little paintings and I love the way you’ve incorporated swatches. I have become far too fussy with my own sketchbooks and think I’ll have to incorporate swatches to restore that feeling of experimentation and creativity. Your work is so inspiring! And congrats on your perseverance in finishing the book despite the sizing!

I've bought several Etchr sketchbooks and only one has gone bad. I have transitioned to storing all my spare books in a plastic bin with several silica gel packs to help them last longer and it seems to be working really well. The sizing goes bad based on the exposure to humidity, so it's totally variable based on the environment. I assume that's why some go bad before others. In any case, I've switched to making my own sketchbooks at this point, it relieves the feeling of needing to stock up (or deal with buying a three pack) and then having them go bad on me. I also just don't like the canvas covers on the Etchr books. I do love the Perfect Sketchbooks with the brown/blue covers and fabriano paper though, they're awesome!
@BeckyTregear
@BeckyTregear Год назад
I agree that the covers are pretty difficult to paint - the liberal application of clear gesso did help though, but they're so rough it is hard to get nice sharp lines without them going fuzzy. I live in a dry environment for the most part, but it didn't seem to help with these particular books. I'd be more inclined to go for the Perfect Sketchbook, because they have that lovely Artistico paper and nice covers, but then I have a whole bunch of loose Artistico paper already, so making books is a great idea. I've actually made a few little booklets, experimenting with basic bookbinding. I'm not very good at it, lol.

You have some beautiful art in your sketchbook… thanks for sharing your tour! Good idea to switch mediums at the end (something I want to remember if it happens to me!). I have been lucky so far with my Etchr sketchbooks… they’ve all kept their sizing. My fingers are crossed that my luck continues because they are my favourite and are relatively easy for me to order from various Canadian art stores. I’ve found it difficult to source 100% cotton sketchbooks from other brands here (and shipping/$ conversion tends to be expensive on out-of-country sketchbook orders).
@BeckyTregear

I'm glad your books are holding up; I still think it's because mine were the first editions, and they've probably made improvements since then. I hope! Cotton sketchbooks are hard to find, or are ridiculously expensive. I've found another book though, and that video shall be released tomorrow. 🙂

I really like the idea of page spreads with swatches and a sample painting - I really should try that for some of my (many, many) watercolours and gouaches for reference. I'm wondering about the sizing in my oldest Etchr books now - not sure how old they are but they are post the kickstarter, at least. I'm hoping having kept the plastic wrap on them might have preserved the sizing.

Becky because you’re a content creator on RU-vid and you have a bigger audience you’re more likely to get a straight answer and explanation from Etchr About their sketchbooks. As a fellow Aussie, I want to get some of their sketchbooks, which I have, but not in the larger sizes. I enjoyed your sketchbook. I have always just worked on pieces of paper and most of my drawings and paintings that weren't framed have been lost or destroyed. I do have lots of them still though. When you said you were using a variety of brands of acrylics it made me remember when I first used acrylics. It was in 1972 and I didn't know you had to buy them all in the same brand. It was a nightmare having different colours in different brands. The binders in the different brands were not compatible and when mixing colours the only colour achievable was a dirty mid grey. Eventually I managed to get a mixing set of all the same brand and I was able to mix my colours successfully. Many years later I still cringe at the thought of having different brands of acrylics. I've mostly abandoned acrylics now. I do have sketchbooks now. One I'm about to start using is a book I made about 10 years ago and filled it with watercolour paper. I'm hoping the paper hasn't totally broken down over the years. I will remember your recommendation to use gouache if the pages are no longer usable for watercolour. I've had a lot of illness over the past few years but all is good now and I'm charging back into my art with a focus on watercolour. I'm also using oils which was the first medium I learned back in the mid 1960's. I watch all of your videos and enjoy them but rarely post a comment. I love the cover design you made for your sketchbook in this video.
@BeckyTregear
@BeckyTregear Год назад
I don't use acrylics very much, so most of mine are cheap tubes for doing little projects like painting sketchbook covers, haha. I have more expensive Golden Open acrylics, which are slow drying and work more like oil paints in that respect. They're wonderful for paintings! I'm glad to hear you're getting back into art and I hope you enjoy creating new things! 😊
@s_t_hogan
@s_t_hogan Год назад
@BeckyTregear I started using acrylics after moving to the wet tropics. I found, after 3 months of drying, some of my oil colours were still not dry on my oil paintings. One day I decided to stop using oils up there and changed to using acrylics. From the available brands up there at the time I chose Hyplar and Liquitex. Hyplar quickly became my favourite as its colours were so strong. I can't get that brand anymore, I suspect it is too expensive and no one up here (Qld) stocks it now. So I have used Liquitex for the past few years. About 20 years ago I got very frustrated with acrylics as I could no longer mix them as I had previously done. I had always used them as I used oils, but I found adding small amuonts of strong colours to large amounts of white tended to result in bright mixtures. I persevered for a few years but in the end gave up on Acrylics. I didn't want to have to buy pastel colours. So I went back to oils. I also did a series of multimedia works using watercolour, gouache, glitter and all sorts of other stuff. I had a lot of fun. I'm thinking of using Acrylics in future as a base for oil paintings but am currently enjoying exploring watercolours again.

I think the Etchr Everyday sketchbook is really overrated. I have it in cold press and I hate the paper. It's ok for watercolour, and awful with gouache. The paper seems to suck the life and colour out of watercolour and is even worse with gouache (I use Schminke Horadam Gouache and watercolours, so it's not the quality of the paints). Even with acrylic ink I find it just dulls everything. From now on I'm saving my precious $$$ and making my own sketchbooks with higher quality paper for a much cheaper price.
@BeckyTregear
@BeckyTregear 9 месяцев назад
I'm with you on that! I haven't had much luck at all with sketchbooks lately - the Hahnemuhle one is even more frustrating! I would consider a Perfect Sketchbook by Etchr, purely because the paper is Fabriano Artistico and I know it's good stuff, but then they cost a lot so hand making a book sounds like a much more cost effective idea.
@bluewren65
@bluewren65 9 месяцев назад
@@BeckyTregear I just tried the Fabriano artistico super white hot press and it just makes acrylic inks sing. I made a large sketchbook yesterday, 48 pages of 200 gsm Magnani Pescia Book Paper which ended up a size between A4 and A3. This paper is sadly no longer available in Australia, but I'm glad I bought 50 A1 sheets back a while when they had their closing down sale. The sketchbook only took 5 sheets so I have 10 more sketchbooks, yay! I also bought a stack of print making paper, including my favourite Pescia relief printing 300gsm buff. Even at half price I spent over $1K. Like the Fabriano, the Pescia book paper takes all media so beautifully. But I'm not too good at clock-watching when I'm out 'arting', and it's been a long hot slog a few more times than was good for my health!!! That's scary when it happens, and it happened three times... Hmmm.... I got away with it because I had extra fluids with cold packs in the car*, bottles of water and a towel to make a cooling collar, and also the presence of a breeze blowing across the car park each time. And the sense not to get in the car and drive till everything calmed down. At least I know how to deal with it - far too many people don't! (*I'd drunk all I had in my bag, and that included extra, but at 35 degrees in the shade, our unaccustomed bodies do _not_ cope!!!), We've had 35 _ 40 degrees consistently for what seems like forever through July to now, while Northern France and the UK have been suffering a non-even of summer, with temperatures below 20 most of the time! I'm also trying to cut down on writing comments, because once I start to write, my 'brief comment' expands into an essay, and I need to sort out my ArtTube writing addiction!!!! Not doing too well so far... as this comment bears witness! 😇
