As a connoisseur of Chinese watercolor I think i might have some insight on this set. I have found there are a few decent makers of watercolor in china that do a pretty good job and these look like the paints from Superior. They to the novelty fan palettes and many half pan sets. I have joint Altenew, Artsy, Tinge, art whale ans the doodlehog set of 36 to be the same and I suspectvyhe Etchr and Dugato are also the same. They vary in price from $12-$50 so if you like the paint you can score a bargain. The Doodlehog set of 36 being the best buy at $12. Oddly thought their 48 pan size is different. That's the trouble, there is no garunteed the next time you buy the paint it will be the same so choosing Etche or Altenew at the higher price gives you a good assurance they will use the same factory. I love figuring out what paint us the same as the others. That said I think paint from this company is nice for the price. Hi Lindsay - You are an Angel my friend. I was trying hard to track this info down and you have it at your finger tips. It's very likely you are spot on about these, since I believe their paper is also sourced in China. My one criticism would be that these are awfully expensive at $45.50 if they really are student grade. I loved the fact they were transparent about the pigments. 100% credit to them for doing that. @@owingsart anytime Marty! I think it's fun to figure out who makes what. Superior is one of the best white label brands but the price can really fluctuate between resellers.
Great review Marty! I don't understand what happened to Etchr. Their art satchels are like Batman's utility belt designed by Iron Man and their sketchbooks are the best on the market with 100% cotton paper in both hot press and a wonderfully textured cold press. They are synonymous with the best of everything and then they release student grade watercolor. Why? What happened in that boardroom meeting? I wish they would have strived to continue giving us the best. I like all your suggestions and I would add "artist grade" to that list. I'd be fine with a more limited palette of specialty colors if they were all of the highest quality.
Hi Pete - I tend to agree with you on this, but still give them credit for this as maybe it is a first pass. Not sure of that, but yes you are right they could have gone higher end. The sketchbooks were originally Irwin Lien (sp?) perfect sketchbooks I think and Etchr bought him out maybe? Not too sure of the whole history there. Paints are a funny thing though. It took Schmincke and others a long time and lots of science to perfect their paints. I don't think Etchr is a paint making company, but rather an art supply seller. My guess is these are Chinese made, like the sketchbooks. Yes the price point is high considering their costs are probably much lower by sourcing these supplies in China. Thanks for the note Pete. Haha, only yesterday I ordered some Etchr watercolours myself. I want to use the Pearlescent Set Golden with black watercolour paper, experimenting a bit. Along with it I purchased an Etchr watercolour sketchbook, the one with the white linen cover. These will be my first Etchr products and I have high expectations which got only increased by your review! I am pretty sure these Etchr paints are the same as Paul Rubens! I have many reasons why I believe this: for example-That sweet red color in the Etchr set is PR123 and the only other time Ive seen this colors is in Paul Rubens line called Scarlet. PR123 is a super uncommon pigment and Ive only ever seen the pigment sold in dry powder pig form thru Guerra paint. But thats not the only reason I believe this set to be the same as Paul Rubens but I wont bore everyone with my long list...lol anyway great set Im sure and great video. Thanks for sharing:)
Lovely painting. I wish everyone would put the color name & pigment info on the pans. Those little paper things can be a real pain.I love that this is a vegan product. The brick brown is gorgeous!
The rating system for Etchr watercolors is the blue wool system, so the numbers are 1-8, not 1-10. 7/8=excellent 6=very good 4/5=fair 3/4=poor 1=very poor….so the paints being in the 6-8 range are very good-excellent lifhtfastness Other than that, great video and review, thanks so much for taking the time to share!
I highly suspect that the etchr paints are made by Paul Rubens company. I mean, they got the same cloth covering, just black for the previous and pink later. They have the same tin and what's a give away is the stick on labels. Now I'm starting to think that the etchr sketchbooks are made by Paul Rubens as well since they have wonderful papers. Edit: they also have the same lightfast rating system!😂
My guess is they source the paper and paint from China regardless of what label they put on it. The original sketchbook is fabriano, but the problem is that Etchr isn’t transparent about where they source their other paper or products. I hate to be cynical but it might be so they can charge more money for the same product you can get elsewhere.
What water brushes are you using right now. I got the derwent set but they might be too chunky for my hand. The brushes I saw local were smaller that were more like the one you have.

For sure my friend. It's a little expensive for the set, but I think the colors are great. Love the fact they list the pigments. Hope things are well in West Texas.
