etchrlab/Stephanie Law Mini Palette Review
Today I am reviewing the etchrlab/Stephanie Law Mini Palette: bit.ly/lindsayMP
This adorable mini palette would be practical for artists who like to paint small with a large variety of colors. This would also make a wonderful gift for any watercolor painter. The palette is small enough to travel with but you would want a stable place to put it down and bring it home wet might cause a mess. There are 3 fets included preventing damage to the ceramic palettes as well as a swatch card for you to fill in. It is a well made high-quality palette.
Pros:
Fairly lightweight (&oz full of paint) and compact
Holds 37 colors
Well made and very sturdy
Paint won't bead up in it
Cons:
Price $50 USD
The wells are tiny so best for round brushes size 8 or smaller. If you will use a flat brush you will need to use the mixing area for loading and that may be a hassle.
This would be inconvenient to travel with unless you have a table to sit at and time to let the paint dry up before closing up the palette as closing this up if the paint is wet makes for a mess.
Bottom line: This is a well-made palette. I was delighted in the tiny size and novelty of it but it wouldn't replace anything I already had. that said it is surprisingly useful, I used rounds and was not aggravated at all but the size of the wells but if I needed to use a flat brush or pack it away wet it would be aggravating. It's a splurge and a luxury for sure but if you are looking for something for a gift for a painter or treat for yourself you can't go wrong.

the two circle palettes would really work for me with the way I am painting... but I think the price for two small ceramic dishes without any paint, is way high... 😨

How awesome for a Botanical Illustrator, who works with miniature brushes and uses dry brush techniques. Going on my wish list :)

I would probably make two mods: 1) a registration mark on the laminated insert you made so it’s easier to line up same way each time so you don’t contaminate the precious light colours; 2) drill a few holes in the base of the tin so the air can circulate and the paints will dry between use and not bleed into adjacent colours. A tiny silica gel pack from a pill container might be possible to fit inside.

The Spin Doctor those are great ideas for modifications, and this little beauty could easily steal my heart and pinch my wallet. However, when I think porcelain palettes and a splurge for the studio, offerings from Stephen Quiller or Tom Lynch tick all the practical and aesthetic boxes for me. Until then, I’ll keep using travel tins on the go and porcelain chargers or enamel trays for mixing whilst home.

Definitely Not Interested... ceramic is not good to carry on a trip - if you drop it, it will break. If you really want ceramic surface to mix paints, use a cheap white plate. There is no need to waste $50 on this - I'm not even sure it is cute... it looks too clustered to identify colors quickly.

@@timeglass777 I agree. I bought an inexpensive (I hate the word "cheap") plate at the Dollar Tree. Works well. I also use my Corelle plates for palettes and they clean up just fine. I had some plastic ones, but they got nasty and stained easily, and were hard to clean. Now they are used for acrylics. A little warm water and hand sanitizer and the paint peels right off. Doesn't help the staining, but who cares.

Very nice but the small Wells would drive me crazy. I'd be really interested if they made the same design but the size of a 12" vinyl record to use in a studio. That would be fantastic!

Another con would be that it’s going to be hard on the tips of your brushes. Having to pick up paint by swirling the tip of your brush in the tiny wells, means a lot of wear and your brush will lose it’s point faster.
@geslinam9703

This is true...but a lot of watercolor artists, at least the more meticulous ones, don’t use the same brushes for dipping and mixing as they do for actual painting. Considering the prices of good brushes, this is a good practice. I don’t always do it, but I try, and when I do use my good brushes for lifting color from the palette, I’m very gentle/careful. This just isn’t the best palette for artists who work fast, boldly, flamboyantly.

This is a beautifully designed palette. I was curious about it too... just wish it was more affordable. I debated it because I have a super tiny amount of desk space and I always paint small. I appreciate seeing it in action with that round brush. Mixing on ceramic does look quite nicer than most palettes as far as not beading up.

As much as I want it just to have it, I agree. I made an ultra slim pocket palette that's about the size of an atc card for much less, after the cost of the silicone to make molds of it is accounted for. It ain't ceramic and it only holds 15 colors, but the wells seem about the same size (hard to tell, though, and can't see how deep they are), and I was able to use the wee eyeshadow pans so I could swap colors out, because I am incredibly indecisive, lol. Still trying to work out how to add more mixing space, though...

You get two in this set, so it’s a little bit more justifiable. Ceramic palettes usually cost more anyways and even more so if they’re handmade and in the US…and not cheaply made in China…and not glazed in some toxic substance. I recently purchased a hand made palette in the shape of a sea turtle for about $30 and it shipped from Russia to the US. It was very good quality and not very big at all. I would justify the cost again considering it’s great quality and not some other piece of junk plastic! Etchr is known for good quality products, do there’s that as well. This isn’t catered to the lower price range market, but the quality of their stuff speaks for why that is! They sell more of luxury items for artists, as in their stuff isn’t cheaply made, are considered more of a novelty and caters to those who can afford it and not have to think twice about their costs….definitely not for the ‘starving artists’ out their. Having said that, their products are meant to last longer that crap made stuff, so you do definitely get what you pay for. Having said all of that, I’m a firm believer in investing in good quality art supplies when and where you can afford them! It does make a difference in your artwork especially with things like brushes and paper, that are meant for the specific intended job. Palettes don’t really fall under that category, however, having good quality supplies as an initial investment, lasts longer than buying many cheap palettes over the years because they just don’t hold up….not to mention the environmental impact that has when we just toss stuff out all the time. If taken care of properly, this type of product can be handed down and get a lot of use from, potentially saving you more, that is to say if it is something you leave on your desk and not use it like a travel set where it could potentially risk getting broken. And sure, you could make one yourself but will it be the same quality as this one? Or hold up like this one? Maybe/maybe not, but is the effort saving you all that much? My guess that unless you’re a potter who knows what they’re doing and can get some what the same results, probably not. You need to be the one to weight the pros and cons here. I’m not saying you’re not a real artist unless you ‘splurge’ on good….or just expensive art supplies, but at the same time, it is nice to have nice things even if they’re ‘novelty’ and/or cost a bit more. I do know this is on my list of art supplies I will be ordering from them along with several other of their products!

I love your channel but this one? Much more sensible to buy essential set of Daniel Smith and a white porcelain plate alongside a bunch of Arches Sheets in 50 $. With a reasonably priced brush you get everything top quality needed for watercolour in the same amount here thrown out on just a very messy and too little palette. Thanks for the review. It made me feel very mature 😁

I bought two (birthday and graduation splurge) and don't regret it. I use it for journal sketches and small/mini paintings that I do only in places around the house (these draw attention in public places). They are really cute and make me pick them up and paint more. I use parchment paper in between and caution use of M.Graham paint in them in humid summer months.

I just bought my first M Graham set and am really regretting it. The colors are absolutely stunning, I bought the southwest set, but the super sticky honey is driving me nuts. Every time I try to fill a pan, the stickiness is too much! I'm going to stick with Daniel Smith. I can't imagine trying to put M Graham in those tiny wells lol.

Michelle Clifton , I am in complete agreement. They would be my number 1 paint except for that stickiness! I've just gotten into Daniel Smith; what other brands do you like?
@michelleclifton8868
@michelleclifton8868 5 лет назад
@@riverbeee9643 I've only been into watercolor for about a year. I started in oil, switched to acrylic, which I used forever, and finally got brave enough to try watercolor. I haven't really tried a ton of high end brands, but Qor is wonderful and Windsor and Newton has great colors too. I love bright colors and so far Daniel Smith and Qor are my favorites when it comes to bright colors and being super easy to work with. But my art is more surreal, landscape type stuff. Imagine a watercolor Dr. Seuss style, lol.

Thank you so much for reviewing this palette. Following your review I got one from Jacksons with the help of my Jacksons points. I found this palette an absolute joy to use both for en plein air and travelling. I usually paint small and detailed so I even use it in the studio. (I took your advice and made a laminated disc to cover when still wet.) Sometimes you cannot judge something by cost alone. This is perfect for my style and so handy I would not be without it now. My only worry is that I may drop it and break it one day so I have put a second one on my Christmas list just in case. Thank you again for this and all the knowledge and experience you share.

Thank you for this review, Lindsay! I purchased a few from the original Kickstarter Stephanie did and really love to use them when I fill them up with my smaller tubes from Holbein and DS that I used to forget I had way more than I would like to admit! I feel that they were a bit more affordable in the Kickstarter compared to now, and wholeheartedly agree they are more of a luxury item compared to what is a bit more accessible and budget-friendly. I was curious if you had a preference with the type of brush you've used with yours? I've been preferring to use traditional watercolor brushes with them compared to using waterbrushes since sometimes even the smaller tipped waterbrushes I used still managed to spread more water throughout the palette onto other colors I originally didn't plan to use. But that's just based off my personal preferences and current skill level as well.
@indigodande4345
@indigodande4345 Год назад
I don't know Stephanie personally but I've caught her a few times on instagram and she's just a very fabulously friendly artist. Her brush technique is made of miniscule movements. If you watch her videos she does alot of dry brushing and small details. Its more convenient for her to have the small palette by her hand. Those small details make up the beauty of her individual works. IF you want more brush space - there is a 19 well version so the wells are wider.

I take a battle of water and some brushes... and I put it with my watercolourpaper and sketchbook in my purse... I have travel sets but I use it for brands that I only max 12 colours... and I dont want in my normal pallet...
@raggedyroad
@raggedyroad 5 лет назад
This is so adorable but I would never pay that much for a travel palette when I can make a little palette for cheap, cheap from an Altoid sized tin that can still hold up to 35 colors and that's more than enough for my uses. In fact I have made several tins in a variety of ways and usually only use the one that has 18 colors. Ice Chips Candy tins are the same size as Altoid and have a white enamel interior so there is even a mixing surface in the lid and if you remove the color pack you can also use the tray beneath. If feel that if they want to make a go of this little palette they will need to figure out a way to make it more affordable.

@AaronHutson
@AaronHutson 5 лет назад
The small format looks like it..might save some time by putting 36 colors a lot closer than a 36 halfpan set so you wouldn't have to reach as far. I could see myself using it with a water brush to quickly pick up bits of color for some small format painting. But then again I don't thing I'd ever need so many colors for a small work. For anything bigger than A5 I'd be using brushes that couldn't get in the tiny wells. I'd hesitate to take this outside because it could break easily if it falls. It's cute but having trouble seeing the scenarios I'd use it in.
